    sigh....to see the fat man one more time.....

    don't mean to be a downer but your description bummed me out severely...
    
    
    
   could be because that summed itup to a "t"

	- 'shopping' for that wickedperfectcool t-shirt.
	
	- drum circles and the sound they make from a distance
	
	- meeting up with regular tourheads you see every year, like the
	  guy playin the hammer dulcimer
	
	- FATTY EGG ROLLS!!
	
	- buying new stickers for the boat or truck
	
	- walking thru the lots and sides streets with and endless sound
	  of constantly changing dead tunes.
	
	

    my favorite is the annual "Cops on Harleys" street sweeping exhibition
    on the side streets
    
    
    that always puts a chill up your spine

    
     - smiling smiling smiling and more smiling
    
     - dancing dancing dancing and more dancing
    
     - drums and space and seeing those images projected on the screen
       behind the stage
    
     - writing down the songs on little pieces of paper and loaning
       my pen to folks around me so they can do the same
    
     - losing then later finding the treats that I stashed away for
       the show
    
     - seeing the 'spinners' in the balcony of the garden go round 
       and round and wondering what's going on in their heads

	September 19, 1995, A Day That Dreams Might Have Been Made Of....

	Today would have been a day of such excitment that might make any
	Boston area deadhead burst with pure joy, yes today would have been
	the final night that the Grateful Dead played in the Boston Garden.
	What did this mean you ask ? Well I can't say what others might
	feel but for me this is what it would have been....

	Not often in ones life do you get to see your favorite band play
	in such a hall as the Wonderful Boston Garden. Yeah the place looked
	like hell but the events that had happened in the building were
	pure heaven. Was it the teams and the bands that played there or
	was it the building that gave life to the these teams and bands ?
	Any event there was fun to go to, from Barnum & Baily's Circus to the
	one that followed the Dead there time and time again. The place was to 
	hot that in late season Hockey games a fog would cloud the ice and who
	could forget the play-off Hockey game that was canceled due to a
	power failure. For me tonight was the night I could be proud to tell
	my grandkids I was at...right after I explain to them who the Grateful
	Dead were...I could have even popped a tape into a deck and let them
	hear it ! Other people brag about how they saw the Celts win the
	NBA championship or even say they saw Bobby Orr fly through the air
	after scoring the Stanly Cup winning goal, me I wanted to have the
	right to say I saw the Grateful Dead tear that old building down...
	
	Well I guess I do have the right to say I saw the last night, as I
	did see it and yes I can still pop a tape into a deck for my grandkids
	to give a listen and I'm sure I will still have to explain who the
	Dead were :')

		..this morning I went to my tape box and pulled two sets
	out. One was the last show I went to with my Wife Sparky, Sept 28 1994
	the other was the last show I saw Oct 3 1994....the idea was I was 
	going to listen to both tapes during the day, even Drums and Space
	as in most cases I would not want to..........so I put the 28th show
	in the player and started the car for my drive to work, it started off
	with "Let The Good Times Roll" and the flood of memories rushed by,
	I smiled and sang along. Then it was Bertha, man I was dancing in my 
	seat and smiling and singing, it was at this point I stopped the car
	on the small back road I was driving down and with tears welting up 
	in my eyes, it finally hit me it was over for real....

	We will never know what the band had in store for us tonight, only
	I somehow know it was going to be a lot of fun....yes tonight was to
	be my swan song to the grande old building and I could not have been
	able to pick a better way to say goodbye. And the day that they do
	tear that old building down I will be there with a boombox in hand
	with a tape of the Grateful Dead playing just that song....

		They can tear it down but the can't take it away

    Ahhhhh, yes.  Debess, you hit it on the money.  I can almost smell it. 
    
    I'll also miss:
    
    - The cockroach in the B.G. mensroom urinal
    
    - The interpreter for the deaf people shrugging when Jerry (ahem)
      improvises the lyrics
    
    - The security lady trying to maintain a frown for the whole show
      whilst the whole time she has a NTTH sticker on her butt.
    
    - The Deadhead Sweeper(TM) buzzing up and down the street after the
      show
    
    - Hanging out with everyone, getting blasted before the show as well 
      as after
    
    - The wind-down ride home on the "T"
    
    - Writing show reviews while feeling wretched the next morning
    

    
    Last night was really lame, sittin around the house doing homework.
    
    Can't imagine what the setlist would have been.  Definitely a Samson &
    Delilah & Brokedown Palace.....Possibly We Bid You Goodnight. 
    
    So whats next? I'm ready.  I'll take just about anything at this point.

    How bout an Eye's, just for a little color!

    I hear the music so loudly sometimes - I could swear the stereo is
    on or something.  I slide out of a half sleep with 'Scarlet..' or
    'Attics'... etc.  sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs
    of our own and the song can be so PRESENT that I can't belive it 
    isn't really there.  Shake John awake and say - 'listen!  Did you hear
    that..?'  He doesn't hear it at that time but he gets it.
    Very powerful .. so powerful the music not only takes over my daytime 
    but sometimes some of the nitetime.
    

    understood Carol....I don't have a stereo in my current puddle-jumper,
    but I'm often caught singin and jammin in the drivers seat to the song
    in my head...people have caught my eye before and given me the thumbs
    up sign and peace sign as if saying "Good tune, eh?", not realizing
    there's no source of music in my car except what's comin out of my head
    and out of my mouth....BTW, my kids hate riding with me cause of
    this....

This made me laugh...it's funny, but my wife recently asked me
if I would please stop singing in public...I had no idea what
she was talking about...until the next time I did it, and she
pointed it out.

TV Guide is listing a live 3 hour blowout tribute to the Boston Garden, 
live, this Friday at 8 PM, hosted by Dan Rather.
All kinds of neat farewell stuff, including concert clips of the Dead!
Now, its probably gonna be just recent GD show clips, but, I just wanna point
out, that the GD first played the Boston Garden in 1973.  6/28/74 is an
awesome tape, too!  Here's hopein'... :-)

Dang it I'm gonna haveta set 1 vcr for X-files and the other for the Garden
tribute.

I don't know if they;re still available, but you can purchase tickets to
this event.  I think the cheap seats are $30.

Anyone interested?  I wouldn't mind going, if for no other reason than to
be in the Garden one last time.

    and 2nite is the LAst Hockey game to be played at the ol' Gahhhden, an
    exhibition game vs the hated Montreal Canadiens...I think it's gonna be
    2- 25 minute periods of hockey, and Orr, Esposito, Cheevers et al, will
    be in attendance, to really give the ol' place a deserved "Thank You,
    and Goodbye"  sniff, sniff

    On NPR last week (Thursday AM) they had a story about the 
    closing of the Garden which
    took place this past weekend. All during the piece you could hear the
    Dead doing China Cat in the background. The piece talked about all of
    the big events which tookplace at the Garden including a JFK speech the
    night before he was elected President, numerous sporting events
    (including skiing!!!) and of course music. The article pointed out that
    the Beatles played the Garden as well as the Rolling Stones. At this
    point they interviewed a gentleman who at age 88 was still an usher at
    the Garden and had been for something like 50 years. He said the most
    interesting fans were for the Grateful Dead. He was amazed that many
    fans spent time in the halls during the show and these 'fans' made no
    attempt to actually go into the hall and see the band.
    
    Tear this old building down indeed.

    a Scott who was passing me on the way out of the bathroom at the Rage
    made a comment as did the Aussies and the Brits on the leaf peeping
    tour who sat down on the barstools next to DC and I....
