              GRATEFUL DEAD TICKET SALES

                  Mail order instructions

Please send your orders in a #10 sized envelope. Include the following:

Index Card:

    A 3x5 index card-NOT PAPER!-, any other size will not fit in our
    files and may get lost.  On this 3x5 card, write in the upper
    left hand corner:

        Your FULL NAME
        Your Address
        Your Area Code and Phone Number


  In the middle of the card, put your ticket request by preference

        -if you want tapers tickets make sure to write TAPER
         next to your request
        -"ANYTHING AVAILABLE" as your last preference lets GDTS
         know that you want them to make reasonable substitutions
         if your request cannot be filled by the time they get to
         it.  Otherwise, if any part of your request cannot be
         filled, none of it will.

Return Envelope:

    Include a #10 sized Self Addressed, Stamped Envelope for
    your tickets.  PLEASE do not decorate your return envelope
    with Grateful Dead art or mention of tickets, it only invites
    theft.  (For example: Tickets Enclosed)  We do love and display
    the artistic and colorful incoming order envelopes!!!

  Make sure to include correct postage. Currently this is $.29 for
    1-8 tix, $.52 for 9-16 tix. We recommend that you have your
    tickets sent back by registered mail. Include the fee for this
    in your money-order, do not add extra postage. This fee does not
    include postage, you must still put a stamp on your return
    envelope. The fee for this service is currently $6.25

Payment:

    Include a POSTAL MONEY ORDER or an AMERICAN EXPRESS money order.
    Make payable to:   GRATEFUL DEAD TICKET SALES-CONCERT NAME
    for the exact amount.

    No other money orders will be accepted.  Make sure your name and
    address are on the money order.  Keep your receipt!!  If your
    order is not filled your payment will be returned to you.
 No personal checks or cash EVER!!

Other:
    Please include your name, return address, and the dates and # of
    tickets for each on the OUTSIDE of your order.

    One order per envelope and one order per person.  Each person
    must fill out their own order.  Duplicate orders of any kind
    will cause disqualification of all involved orders.
    (Which means: If we announce 3 concerts in the same city,
    you may order the maximum number of tickets to all 3 concerts
    in one envelope, unless we state otherwise.  Mixed orders or
    orders for more than one city in one envelope will not be
    accepted.)

    All orders will be filled on a "first come, first served"
    basis by date postmark, NOT by when we receive them.

   NO METERED MAIL, EXPRESS MAIL, OR FEDERAL EXPRESS ACCEPTED!!

    If we decide to do a random selection mail order we will
    announce it on the hotline before hand.  (If we receive more

thing to add is all showtimes are 7:30 and MAIL ORDER DATE IS MONDAY, AUG 8TH!

The arena sets the price, not the dead, and since half of the tickets to
all shows are sold through ticketmaster, the arena sets the price that
ticketmaster tells them to set. 

I've heard banter in the past that ticketmaster tried hard to shut out the 
dead from selling their own tickets. They've had limited success, too, as 
once in a while shows come along for which there is no mail order (and 
there was plenty of time for GDTS to do it).

We've been very lucky to have gdts m/o services so long. Frankly, I'm 
surprised they haven't muscled gdts out yet...

are the dead doing anything to assist the pearl jam et. al. suit against
ticketmaster?

I doubt it. Its clear that anyone who disses the cigar smokers will get nasty
burn marks right between their eyes. The dead have the most to loose, since 
its hard enough for them to find venues that will welcome them (because 
deadheads freak out the locals so much).

There were lawsuits dead vs. ticketmaster.  It was some time in the early
80's.  I think it was TM trying to, like you said, muscle in on GDTS.

Anyone remember better than I do?

    I talked to Steve Marcus about this at Nassau Coliseum this spring. 
    This is when the Pearl Jam/ticketmaster story was just getting out.
    I asked him why the Dead haven't done the same thing (kind of protest
    steep ticketmaster charges, prices of tickets, etc.)
    
    He said that they have tried to get ticketmaster to lower the price of 
    tickets, but Ticketmaster refuses to until the dead stop having mail order.

pretty big article in the wall street journal this week about pearl jam's
fight with ticketshafter.  the article gave me the impression that pearl
jam isn't going to be very successful.  they have some high-powered manhatten
law firm representing them (microsoft's cheif legal council is the brother of
some guy in pearl jam, that's how PJ got a good law firm).  the article went
on to say that this guy is suing that guy for libel, etc,etc,etc.  seems like
it is all gonna get lost in the wash and ticketshafter will prevail.  too
bad.  

    
    Ahhhhhhhhhh, 6 shows in the BG.  I knew there had to be some benefits
    to move back east.  rfb, I got get you to at least a few of these shows

what's the story with the new Boston Garden, or whatever they will
call it?  Will the fall dates be in the new or old?

	old. the new ain't finished yet.

   So, what's the old like?  I've never been inside.  I hear its
bad off, and hot.  Is it worse than MSG?

depends how you define bad.  it's got the most confusing layout and worst
sound of any arena i've been to.  but i kind of like it.  it's got character.

Just make it loud. (so much for being an audiophile)

What's the story outside the garden.  What do out of towners do?
Are hotels generally the solution between nights.  I live in
Concord, NH and I am not too excited about the 70 mile drive
after each show. (don't think I won't do it though, I do it 
for work every day and how much fun is work?)

	Rumor has it the rats at the gahden wear leather jackets,	
	at least according to Garcia ;-) Personally, I've never seen em.

	BG verses MSG:  I've never been to MSG, but the BG was built
			around 1910 and I believe that MSG is fairly new.

    re:  Boston Garden
    
    The only complaints I had about the Garden last year were:
    
    1. There is no dancing in the hallways because you can't hear anything.
    If you go near a doorway to dance you'll be asked to go back to your
    seat (although there were a couple of places you could go where you
    could hear a teansy bit and dance)
    
    2.  They enforce the seating.  They enforce the "nobody dancing in
    walkways, stairs, etc.) rule.  Which I can understand, but the seating
    part sucks when you have nosebleed seats.  I found that if you go behind 
    the stage you can dance freely there.
    
    3.  I didn't like the sound very much.  And when you are sitting 
    10th-13th row center you will definitely need earplugs (first time I 
    walked out of a dead show with my ears ringing)...
    
    4.  The scene after the show.  Walking out of the show you will see a
    line of ~20-30 police motorcycles revving up.  Half an hour later, they
    are sweeping the streets with a paddy wagon and motorcycles.  It's
    really chaotic and scary, even when you're straight..This is when you
    head for the Commonwealth Brewery ;')
    
    So basically, that's all I can think of....I really like to dance, and
    have a lot of room to dance, so that's why I don't like the seating
    policy.  I just can't get into it when I can't move my legs.
    
    But I'm still grateful that they play there....it's really nice to see
    6 shows within a half-hour drive...

depends where you go.  there are spots in the balcony that are pretty laid
back.

re: sound

actually, it kind of depends.  far back on the floor (around the tapers
section) the sound last year was pretty good.  really close on the floor
(1st row) it was ok.  almost, but not quite, that close (around 10th row) it
was way too loud.  if i'm not on the floor, i like the front of the balcony
on the sides.  avoid the stadium seats (under the balcony) at all costs.  the
sound sucks there.

perhaps the worst part of it.  those cops driving recklessly into crowds of
people is ridiculous.

Madison Square Garden is a delight compared to the Boston Garden.
Boston Garden has:
    no airconditioning, and can get pretty hot some nights
    obstructed view seating (oh, what's my seat doing behind this pillar?)
       on a side note, I think it was mentioned that some people who had
       obstructed view seats were able to go and complain and were reseated.
       Can't be sure if that's a correct memory though, or if it applied to
       BG.
    horrible acoustics.  Very much a challenge to Healy, wonder how Cutler
    will do.  The worst seats are in the loge(?) section, where the
    balcony overhangs your head.  The sound is abysmal there.  There are
    some areas that the sound is not so bad, but overall it's not built
    for this type of thing.

The best news of course, is that by fall of '95, it will no longer exist!

Aside from the bad points that really call for a new facility, there is a 
lot of history in the old place.  Wonder if they'll get a new parquet
floor for the new building?  Haven't decided if I'll go this year.  Money's
tight at the moment.  But we've had fun in the past anyway.

Did a send to members get done?  My mail was in bounce mode this morning
and I didn't see anything.

    Oh yeah!  I remember that by the third show, the walls in the hallways
    were sweaty....really wet and slimy.  So don't touch the walls and you
    won't get grossed out ;')
    
    I like the Garden, but I'm excited about the new one next year.  I
    wonder if the dead will be playing at the new one?

in '91 (or '92?), i had all lame seats.
last year, i had great seats... never sat more than 3 rows past the floor.

    Just to confirm the bad seat handling policy:
    
    Last year I had really crummy seats in the loge - under the balcony.  I
    complained early in the first set to the customer service desk, and
    they moved me to great seats, just off the floor, behind and to the
    right of the taper section, on the aisle.  I loved it.
    
    I actually learned this from Fog.  Go figure. ;-)

Yah, Now that you mention it I remember sweating my butt off last year. THis 
place is HOT, and I don't mean like in the set list. Those however can also 
be hot which is a good reason to go. As for lodging, it's a bit of a drive, 
but I go home. Cops in the streat, yup they are, in the brewery I don't 
recall seeing one. All things considered, I'll go asgain. Price considered, 
probably not to all six. 

	We had better sound at Highgate, fresher air and cooler temp.s. All 
things considered, I'll go there again too.

Whelp, I had planned on going to 3 BG shows last year and ended up at all 
6. Venue sure can make or break a show, and seats in particular. But if yor 
going there with the expectation that bobby is going to spit on you, your 
guaranteed to be disapointed.

    
    Despite the crummy sound pools, limited view spots and the rats with 
    leather jackets...I can always find areas on the balcony to get some
    space and good sound/views.... 1/2 the people that are supposed to
    be in the balcony aren't, mainly cause it's so tough to figure out
    how to get there!
    
    The Gahdin must have at least 2' of play in every direction....that 
    place bounces, shakes, shimmy's, and downright lurches sometimes..it's
    great!  If you stand still for a moment during a song like Aiko, it's
    impressive.  It even makes the anti-dead-type blutus's have to dance, 
    they havn't a choice!!! :-)

Madison Square Garden is much better laid out than Boston.  It's basically 2 or
3 concentric rings, where you walk around the perimeter to get from one place
to the other.  Boston, on the other hand, has a real funky layout where you
have to go up and down staircases that are in the corners, and it's a pain to
get to some of the side sections (like walking around in the dark inside the
arena to get from one place to the other).  The section layout is definitely
not intuitive, and it's hot.  But I agree it does have character.  I believe
this may be the last year the dead play the old Garden, because I am told that
they will drop the puck for the Bruins 95-96 season at the new Garden, and
since the season starts in October (?), by the time the fall tour starts next
year the new Garden should be ready to go.  So, the dead may open the new
Garden before the Bruins :-)

I predict a Sampson and Delilah during the first and last show of this run. 
Definitely time to tear this whole building down!

The worst thing about the Garden for me is parking.  If you decide not to do
the "T" thing (like on the weekends, since the last train out is around 12:30),
you'd better carpool since parking in a lot near the arena will be no less than
$10.  Garages cost less, but they take forever to empty.  It is possible, but
real tough, to find free on-street parking in the North End or near Beacon
Hill.

I plan to do a weekend run at MSG.  I don't mind NYC (it's my hometown).  I'd
avoid bringing a car to the show because of the risk of theft/vandalism, and
parking in a garage is real expensive (like $15).  The subway runs all night,
and Metro-North runs til about 2:30 AM.  Don't miss the last train out like I
did in 1991 :-)  I'd recommend getting a hotel over the river in NJ and taking
the PATH train or a Port Authority bus.

    isn't sorta unfair to compare a place built in the 1920's (BG)
    to a place built inthe 1960's (MSG) ???  of course MSG is layed out
    better, they learned from the mistakes of the past....
    
    hmm, compare the new BG to MSG, and see what one is better, for
    viewing, acoustics, concessions, # of restrooms etc

    man, I'm afraid I'd never make it! It's usually enough of a chore for 
    me to get where I'm goin in venues I'm sorta familiar with/have been to 
    a few times  , muchless get where i'm goin in a venue with motorcycle
    cops in leather jackets and escalators in the corners and no dance

    rfb,  you Really should experience a show at the Gaahhden before it's
    torn down...we should let you drive there too  :)  you'd probably never
    wanna come back east again :)

;-);-) You have to go up approximately 6 flights of _stairs_; there are
no escalators that I know of in the Gahden. There are some elevators though,
which are used only by VIPs, handicapped, and the [physically] incapacitated.
Mindy and I got to use one when she was 8 months pregnant.  

One thing about the new garden, I hope they don't change to some wimpy
pop tune in between plays...

RE:  Both Gardens

Boston Garden was based on the original (I think) Madison Sq. Garden.
But NYC got the ways and means so they've gone thru I don't know how
many iterations all named the same, "MAdison Sq. Garden".

    For both boston garden and madison square you need to send in two
    orders - series 1 and series 2
    

    What kind of seats can I expect from mail order, as opposed to

    nice colourful tickets are from the mail order :')
    
    I'd say you have a better chance at getting front row seats in the mail
    order then you would at getting in the building through ticketshafters.

Like Chris said, you definitely have a chance at better tix via mailorder.

Usually 1/2 the tix are sold via mailorder, and 1/2 via TicketBastard.
And with TB's deals with ticket "agency's" and scalpers, there's usually
not a whole lot there to be had in terms of good seats or tix, unless 
your lucky.

I haven't mail ordered in a while... so....

Boston Series 1, I want 2 tix per night for all 3 night.
So I get a mail order for  (6 * 32.50) + 6.25 for the reg. mail.
And put $0.29 postage on the return evelope.

For series 2, all the same, repeated..

In other words I pay the registered mail fee _twice_, cause they want the
two series in different orders???

    Yes, because you are having two different envelopes sent back to you, and 
    each envelope is going through registered mail.

    Woke up this morning and realized I spaced on the tickets.  Quickly

    I noticed a lot more people than usual doing mail order at the P.O.
    this morning....

    
    While doing my 10th double check at the post office, the clerk asks
    me "So what is "D" "E" "C" head means on my shirt.  I told him it was 
    for.  I told him and he said he'd get the orders in the mail ASAP and
    good luck :^).   Not many people mail ordering out here.

    I still can't believe that I'm trying to get those Boston Garden
    tickets, but during lunch today I kissed the envelope and put it into a
    mail box.  I know it's probably a pipe dream but, what the hell -
    nothing ventured, nothing gained.
    
    The current MSG was built in 1968 and renovated in 1992 for the
    Democratic Convention.  This is the fourth MSG in NYC.  The previous
    three were located in different parts of the city.  The renovation
    improved the bathroom horrors for us women and now they sell ice cream,
    but they took away the different colored seats (reds, oranges, yellows,
    greens and the infamous nosebleed blue seats) for the current flavor of
    teal/green.  (Though we still talk about our section color rather than
    the numbering scheme)  The seats in the high rent district even have 
    drink holders!  Since the renovation, MSG is not a pit anylonger - in
    fact it's quite pleasant!
    
    Tonight I'll say my prayer to St. Stephen for seats!

Just back from the South Nashua P.O. The (disgruntled) employee said, "Ok, 
and I'll put them with all the rest of them (grumble...)." Suppose looking 
out at the nice weather and having the stamp envelopes would irk me a bit, 
but I thanked him for his help.

      At the Salem, NH Post office at about 2 PM.....postal employee
    number one went off "oh no...not more money orders...I wish I had
    a dollar for every money order I've made out today...blah, blah,
    blah..."  Upon returning to the counter after filling out my money
    orders...postal employee number two (after I asked him to please
    hand stamp this for me) " No, I'm not going to do it, I'm going
    to save your life by not letting you go( to the shows)..." Then after 
    he slowly stamped the envelopes, he asked me if I was happy now...
     I said "thank you very much, sir, have a nice day..."   I just love
    people that really enjoy their jobs, don't you...

    You should have gotten employee #2's name and called his supervisor.
    Let them know he needs an attitude adjustment.  Maybe he hasn't

    Actually the Salem PO people are usually wicked cool about it.
    I sent off from Nashua PO this time, for the first time. They were
    very cool and smiley in response to my smiley coolness ;-)
    
    I hope I didn't #^@%$ up my mail order "luck" by sending from a
    different PO. I usually score REAL well with GDTS...

	I mailed from the Bolton Post Office, at Nashoba Park. Has a
	"lucky" ring to it ;-) I chatted with the two very nice ladies
	who were working. They both wished me luck. They said only one
	other person was in to mail yesterday. A very nice mailing

not a dollar, but they do get 75�.  at least the post office does, and that's
where his salary comes from.

no problems at the hudson post office.  i did leave my money order receipt
there, but i called, they found it, and they're holding it for me to pick up
today.

i just ordered for series 1, fwiw.

I'm not sure why so many people complain about the service at the post office. 
Both of the ones I used to use in cambridge were great.  Fast, friendly
service, hand stamp them with no problem, etc.  The marlboro one I went to
yesterday was the same.  No hassle at all.

I went there because it's home. I figured my town came through for me last time. 
But at lunch, when I had everything filled out and ready to mail, Amex MOs and
all, I forgot to be sure of which box to send it to. I figured I'll just go to 
the post office and ask. I'll compare it to any other envelopes going to San 
Rafael. 
	No Luck! Nobody had been there, No heads drove in and the postal clerk 
looked at me like, "What are yo talking about". At 4:15 she was still there, 
and another guy who kindly put and 8-8post mark on it now I hope we get tickets. 


	But boy our new post office is in better shape than the trailer we 
had last year.

    yeah if you get the finger (let's hope not) they'll just send the whole
    thing back to ya. Have a friend who sends the whole thing ALL the time
    and nevah has NEproblems either getting tix cuz of it or getting his
    money back if rejected.

i did 1 for series 1, 1 for series 2.

deb did 1 for series 2.

2 tix per night.

	The only way you'd have a problem is if 1) GDM never gets your
	order, or 2) they send you your tix but they never arrive.

	Due to financial constraints, I had to punt mailorder :-/  I still
	have to make a downpayment on a car, and that leaves me with 
	practically zero play money...  oh well.  Maybe by showtime I'll	
	have a better $ outlook and there are usually extras to be had.

	$32.50 plus fees and all that is getting ridiculous too, and it's
	not like you can get your phil with a single show these days, you
	gotta catch more than 1 show to get _it_, unless ya get real lucky.

    MO'd with a friend at the Northboro PO Monday - The clerk made comments 
    like - "Too bad we don't have a Jerry Garcia stamp!"  
    
    It would be a pretty cool stamp for MO.
    
    In the MO, both my friend and I did for series I:
    First choice - 3 tix Saturday
    Second choice - 3 tix Sunday
    
    For series II we did
    First choice - 2 Tix Thursday
    Second choice - 2 Tix Tuesday
    Third choice - 2 Tix Wednesday
    
    I never tried the first, second, third choice deal before; it will be
    interesting to see what happens.
    
    These shows will be strange since for Series I I will be a DEC
    employee, but we'll be sold to Quantum about Oct 1, so I'll be a
    Quantum employee for Series II.  Wear my DEChead shirt for the last
    time...

Wasn't the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday option series 1 and Sat, Sun, Mon 
series 2? I based this assumtion purely on timing of the shows assuming 
series 1 came first. Wow, did I not pay attention to a lot of what was 
happening. Oh man I can feel the MOSS growing now. Look there's something 
green on the north side of my leg already.

    	You were correct, Series I is Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
    and Series II is Saturday, Sunday, and Monday...

well, it's been two days since i MO'd Boston.  i've checked my mail
box and have received nothing.  this is a good sign, though.  i am pretty
confident now that my SASE is inside the envelope addressed to GDTS 
instead of the other way around.

            Well, it looks like this will be my last week in this file. I
      have taken a job with Quantum, and as of thursday will no longer
      be able to use Dec-notes. If anyone has info on a RUMOR about a 
      Denver show, PLEASE send me a note to COMET::LAURICH. Take care,
      and I hope to see some of you counting stars this fall.

    I went to the Capital Center (oops, USAir Arena) show last night. 
    Really a good show -- I had great, great seats -- sitting where the
    players bench usually is for basketball -- 1st row off the floor!
    
    Lots of dancing - great Fall Tour shirts - I got the one with the bus
    on the front and the road markers on the back saying "without love, the
    dream will never come true"
    
    The absolute best jam of the show was Franklin's Tower .... seemed like
    it went on for 30 minutes .... picture the _entire_ USAir Arena
    swaying/dancing/just chanting in perfect harmony "...roll away, the
    dew"  Jerry was in a groove and had us all right there with him ... not
    a missed beat for the entire jam.
    
    The only bummer about the show was the "smoking police" ... USAir Arena
    is a "smoke free environment" which doesn't go so well with my friends.
    So, basically, people smoking ciggarettes were asked to put them out by
    the Yellow Army and got their ticket punched .... defaced ... after two
    ticket punches, you're gone.  Was talking to a guy who got thrown out
    from the Sunday show --- that's pretty bogus just for a lousy smoke.
    
    Anyway, back to the goodness of the show .... the most memorable moment
    was a couple, probably late 30's, on the floor with their daughter
    sitting on Dad's shoulders, arms outstretched upward, clapping and
    swaying with the band .... taking in her first show, in 1994, as a
    three year old!  Just grate!
    
    Well ... I have to work in the Washington Convention Center today where
    Digital has a huge booth at a large Federal Trade Show .... I think I'm
    headin upstairs to pick out a good power tie for the event ... probably
    the red/mosaic Jerry tie.

    Heard it on the radiddio last nite... The Boyz grossed $52 Million
    in concert ticket sales this year... not counting GDM (and rfb sure 
    helped THEIR sales!) and other income (JGB, Diga, etc)
