    Can anyone recommend a good book/class/seminar/tool for getting around
    on the internet, WWW, etc.  I bought The Whole Internet, from Orielly,
    and its a little dry reading, I need something interactive.  I know I
    can telnet from my terminal, but I don't know how.  My internet
    expertise currently consists of signing on to conference mailing
    lists, and E-mailing friends who have MCI mail or Gateways.

Well, actually, you probably can't telnet from your terminal, at least not 
outside the easynet, unless you have a registered encryption key.

If you have access to a workstation, I'd reccomend installing xmosaic.

    My cryptokey is on its way and I'll soon be able to telnet!
    
    If you're on a VMS system, you'll need to have UCX installed to get to
    the internet.  Type "help ucx" and if it gives you a help message,
    you're in luck.  Note that UCX may not be installed on the whole
    cluster, just one machine.
    
    If you're on a workstation, you can use Mosaic to navigate the
    Internet.  If not, Lynx works well.  Unfortunately for me, I have to
    use Lynx on a ws because I'm in a hidden area and my boot node doesn't
    have UCX installed.  Lynx is easy to use, I've never tried Mosaic.
    
    There's an Internet notes conference which will point you to where you
    can copy Lynx or Mosaic from.
    
    Anyone else going to the World Wide Web Workshop in LJO on Thursday?

Hey Jeff;

Check out SOFBAS::INTERNET_TOOLS ... there're pointers to documentation in
there, including something titled "The Dummys' Big Guide to the Internet" (or
something like that ... no criticism of your intelligence implied, of course,
it's just one of those awfully cute titles, like "DOS for Dummies" etc. ;^)

    Is it difficult to set up a home page?  I'm clueless on how to start.
    
    I attended the WWW Workshop yesterday.  Most of it was over my head,
    but I picked up a few things.  For those of you who haven't had the
    pleasure of being in a room full of software engineers, let me just say
    . . . no, maybe I'd better hold my tongue.  :-)  OK, let me just say:
    don't worry about what to wear to such a meeting.

A bit spooky to find the Boston Garden map that I posted in Grateful for
the '91 shows in the FTP archive at UC Berkley.  Nice to know that it's

    If you've got netscape, this is an interesting thing to check out.
    I'm not sure it works on all versions, but...
    for a URL/Location/site whatever, type in

    which is an 'internal' location so to speak.
    
    And then go to find something, say http://www.springfield.com
    and check out the icon.  I think this is the thing that is 
    different depending on your version and machine.

You can (as I have done) use the "Save As..." function to save the page as
Postscript.   I think I must have used Load to Local Disk also, because I
remember taking the Philly Spectrum map and gamma-correcting it in XV to
try to make it more legible.

	I read on the net last night that Donna Jean was
	at the memorial service and funeral.  I also read
	an interview she did.  When she first heard about
	Jerry, she said the first thing she thought about
	was us heads and she understood how hard it would
	be for us.  Said she had gone to see the Dead when
	they played in Birmingham in the spring and that
	the next day, Jerry called her and invited her
	to his hotel room.  She said they laughed and
	talked about old times and that she saw no evidence
	of "drug use".  She said she was very glad that
	he died while he was trying to get better and not 
	of an overdose - so that that wouldn't be the
	emphasis now.  Good positive interview - and, to
	me, it showed me what classy people both Donna 
	and Jerry are...

    about the semiconductor products...  future incarnations have some much

    digital logo stuff (sweats, coffee mugs, that sort of thing)...

I checked it out couple of days ago.
My reaction was, as a test engineer always looking for chip specs, was:

It would be nice if the chip spec .PS files were online!  I mean, geeze,
thats what I really want!  Maybe also the .BSDL files for the chips with
JTAG - EV4, EV5.  I've worked with Dilip Bhavar on the .BSDLs.

    What a hassle the www has become.

Apparently, this was a major topic of discussion at the most recent IETF
meeting in L.A. last week.  The WWW has generated so much traffic, and so
many short-lived TCP connections across the net, that new and creative
means of improving performance to handle the added load, not to mention
the less-than-professional-quality coding practices of the browser
authors are the hotest topic amoung technical circles of the Internet
Engineering task force - things like caching, protocol enhancements and
persistent TCP connections are hot right now.
