Good topic. There are lots of people whose music drives me nuts, but
not necessarily their voices. So, seperating voice from music, here's
the top three that make me wish I had been born deaf:

    	- David Lee Roth
    	- Tom Waits

    Yoko Ono (now and forever)

Most of what Cyndi Lauper does (although "Time after Time" demonstrates
that when she doesn't try to sing "Mezzo Bimbo" she has a lovely
    	voice).

Geddy Lee - even though "some of my best friends are Rush fans"

Have I already mentioned Neil Young and Yoko Ono?

This new Icelandic chick "Bjork" (or something like that)

Kate Bush - "Yah Yah Babooshka" ???? - gimme a break

Neil Young and Yoko Ono (let's hope they never conspire against
the mirrors, windows and dogs of the world to do a duet).

and last but not least: Linda McCartney

The singer in our band brought a tape of her singing to rehearsal
the other night that was hilarious. Apparently Paul complained
that the sound guys were making her sound bad and basically
taking her out of the mix.

Story goes that the soundman, attempting to make a point to Paul,
took a multi-track live master tape they had made out, and did
a special mix eliminating all vocals but Lindas.

My friends, this lady REALLY can NOT sing! She was so far off
key it was simultaneously pathetic and hilarious.

I heard the soundman who did this got fired, either for doing it
or for giving it to a radio station who ended up littering the
    	airwaves with it.

But if you ask me, there's no question that the soundman was right.

    IMHO,

The tale of the tape "proving" that she cannot sing has been told over
and over again. I saw the McCartney tour at the Worcester Centrum
several years ago and Linda was quite audible and did a very nice job
on the vocals. I think the tape can be very easily explained by a poor
monitor mix as any of us who do vocals with a live band can attest.
I'd sure hate to have somebody sifting through to find my bad moments
(few though they are :^) ). I think that story is very unfair and any
radio station that had the tastelessness to play the tape is beneath
    contempt.

What _really_ makes me run screaming, though, is the voice of the lead
    singer for Pearl Jam.

I'm not the one who brought up the Linda McCartney tape, although
I have heard mention of it before. (In general, I like Linda, though,
because she took a lot of great photographs of rock stars in the '60's.

Jeez, I can't think of anyone whose work I've found universally
unlistenable. Kate Bush comes pretty close, although I actually came
close to liking "A Deal With God." (that is Kate Bush, isn't it? I
    might have the wrong title).

I'm a lot more likely to find lyrical content more annoying than a
singer's voice, or people who think that dissonance is automatically
artistic and hence musical. For example, I'm the only person I know
who thinks Sinead O'Connor's second album was worth buying and her
first album was not. Too much abuse of voice on the first one -- were
    those shrieks necessary?

| | It's more often the type of music, or the music, that will make me
dislike a song, than it is just a case of hating a particular singer's
voice. For example, I think Eddie Vedder has a good voice, but I just
don't like the music he does with Pearl Jam.
