I'm looking for suggestions for boxed sets of blues CDs.

My brother-in-law is a big blues fan (old and new stuff) and I was
hoping to buy him a boxed set for Xmas. I would like to get a boxed
    set with various artists.

    Any suggestions???

    Thanks, Rick

You might want to ask in AKOFIN::AFTER_HOURS (the blues and R&B
conference).

Atlantic issued an 8 or 9 volume set titled "Atlantic Rhythm and Blues
1947-1974" that contains lots of great stuff.

Alligator put out a 20th anniversary 2 CD set a year or so ago
that is a great collection of modern blues. A good variety, everybody
from Johnny Winter to Professor Longhair to Koko Taylor to Roy
Buchanan. It was selling for under $15 every time i've seen it
    in the stores.

See the "sampler" topic in AFTER_HOURS for a little bit of description of the new Smithsonian 4-CD set "The Blues". This strikes me as a good set for someone who's already an "expert" and owns a lot of stuff. It's only glaring omission is that B.B. King wouldn't license them his stuff -- mostly everyone else you'd expect is there, and some of the material is not yet otherwise available on CD. Great booklet w/ liner notes, very well done. In the Boston area, it's available at Tower Records and Newbury Comics. The Atlantic R&B set mentioned in .-2 is great, but it is R&Bish variants of blues (Ray Charles, Joe Turner, Aretha, Otis Redding, etc.). Fine if that's what you want. Your friend probably is already well aware of the 15 single-CD volumes of Rhino's "Blues Masters" series. - Jay | |||||
