I've come across several dozen old 78 RPM records; some are pressed on
only one side. I suspect that they are from the 20's, 30's, and 40's.
Anyone have a thought on how I can determine if they are worth anything
to a collector of such things?

There are quite a few used record/CD stores in the Boston area ( if
you're actually in the Boston area ) - two of my favorites are In Your
Ear, and Planet Records, both of which have a large selection of vinyl
collectibles.
Also, there are often wanted ads in the newspaper, placed by
collectors. Chances are you've got some that are fairly valuable . . .

Record collecting has taken a real hit from CDs. It used to be the only way you could hear some of this music, but now lots of it has been remastered and released on CD and sounds better than it ever did when it was on 78s. All that notwithstanding, you need to hook up with someone who is dealing in 78s. Try used record stores, check the classifieds in music mags, and look for a copy of Goldmine at one of those record stores. Typically, you can expect to get 50 per cent of the retail price for your records. It may not be very much, but you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that the records are no longer "lost", plus whatever you do get for money. | |||||
