| | Zevon has been one of my faves for years. I do wish he was a bit more
consistent, though. How can someone who can write a song with as much depth
and poignance as "Accidentally Like a Martyr" turn around and write something
as insipid (I.M.O.) as "Looking for a Heart"?!
Still, at his best, very few songwriters/performers can touch him. I rank him
with other personal faves Neil Young and Graham Parker as far as being a
renaissance man. He's equally adept and skilled at singing, writing, playing
piano, and playing guitar (which he seems to be favoring in recent years).
By the way, a few months ago I posted a note in the RECORDS conference asking
if anyone had his FIRST album, recorded way back in 1969. Someone did, and I
taped it, and it's a REAL TREASURE. Definitely worth searching for. His
talents haven't fully flourished at this point, but the album is very enjoyable,
and much more than a curio. Oh, by the way, it's called "Wanted: Dead or
Alive." (predating Jon Bon Jerk by a good 15 years)

| | He was on Letterman's Late Night last night, WOW ! I caught the last
part of his "...Thompson Gunner" song & his vocal was excellent, his
playing was sharp & the band (of course) did a phenomenal job of
backing him. I've heard this tune on FM radio before & I don't recall
it sounding nearly as good. Did any of you "'wolves" happen to get a
good tape of last night's performance on Letterman ?

    Harvey, this is from memory;

One entitled Warren Zevon, this one has Poor Poor Pitiful Me on it.
    It is an early one.
Excitable Boy, Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School, The Envoy, Stand In
The Fire (Live), Mr Bad Example, as mentioned, there is another live
one out now. I may have forgotten one or two, but like I said, these
are from memory. As I like WZ alot it would be hard to rate. My
favorite is Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School. Hope this helps.

Heard him on the radio recently in a band called Hindu Love Gods, with
some members of REM. It could be on an album of cover versions.

    Anyone have this?

BTW last I heard of WZ was that he was spotted in a small club in Spain
singing Irish love songs! Any confirmation of this bizarre sighting?

This concert is called the WZLX Be - in .... not sure how they are spelling it.
They did this last year and it was very tame. It's advertised as a family
event, " leave the booze and drugs at home ".
It starts at 1:00 pm this Saturday and runs until about 9:00.
Also on the bill is the Atlanta Rythym Section and a blues band I can't
remember the name of.
Zevon and the ARS are the last acts.
tune into 100.7 FM for more info

Saw Warren Zevon Thursday @ South Station in Boston, Free concert
put on by WBOS in Boston. It started at 12:15 in the afternoon and
lasted about 1 hour. Was just Warren and his Grand Piano and an
Acoustic guitar. He switched back and forth song by song. From what
I can remember He played the following...

              Splendid Isolation
              Carmelita
              Poor Poor Pitiful Me
Things to do in Denver when you're dead
              Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner
              Accidently Like a Martyr
              Excitable Boy
              Mr. Bad Example
              Werewolves of London
A new one from a forthcoming release...something about
a bond dealer playing Bingo on an Indian Reservation.
              Lawyers Guns and Money

He sounded excellent even over the Train announcements that were
being blasted out every 5 minutes !! The place was packed. SRO

Yes, it was "Dream On", I get those two mixed up! [Although
I do think Warren was also on Larry Sanders at one point.]
Last night they had part 2 of last week's Dream On episode.
Warren shows up again at the end, he has decided Martin
can help him with his songwriting!
