    I heard a song the other day that I liked when it was "popular" but I
    never heard the name of the group that sang it.  I've asked several
    people at work if they knew what group it was and no one knows.  (they
    all know what song I'm talking about though).
    Part of the chorus is:
    	"You've gotta be crazy baby, to want a guy like me"
    	"well you gotta be out of your mind, ....crazy!"
    	"there must be some kind of mistake, to want a guy like me"
    
    I thought it was "Crowded House".  Am I right?  Also what's the name of
    the song?

    "Crazy" is by the group ICEHOUSE off their "Man of Colours" album

    There's a song I've heard a couple of times that I really like but have
    yet to find out who does it.  The singer reminds me of a young Robert
    Plant, not in screech mode, but when he used to the slower stuff like
    the beginning part of Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You and Stairway To Heaven. 
    Anyway  some of the lines are "You're alive she said, why shouldn't I
    be and further on he sings "I'm alive" a few times in succession.  This
    song is not a ballad.

This is a real stab in the dark but one of the first songs I
can remember hearing on the radio ( mid 1970's) was a song 
sang by a male about a girl who worked in a MacDonalds who
wore a plastic uniform (?). Tenious link but that's all I 
have. Help!

is the artist/composer/write that "made it famous"?  How would people request

    while back and he did a cover  called 'This song's no good' by some
    band from California - for the life of me I can't remember the name -

         A trip to your local record store should get you most of those
    answers.  Look up the song titles in the phonolog and it will list

Kai Winding is a Danish trombone player.  "More (the Theme from 'Mondo Cane')"
was recorded by hundreds.  An Italian composer -- Erico Moroconi? - wrote it.

"Alabama Jubilee" - Al Jolson, but Jerry Lee Lewis has recorded it.

"Alley Cat" - "Bent Fabric" (actually Steve Allen)

"Arkansas Traveler" - old fiddle tune, title of current Michelle Shocked album, 
but I don't know if it's on there.

"Calcutta" was a hit for Lawrence Welk.

"Happy Wanderer" was a German hit that somehow crossed the pond

"Sweet Georgia Brown" is the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters.  The 
Coasters recorded it, but in a sort of heavy-metal arrangement, not what you 
want.

Lots of these songs are standards not identified with anyone in particular

    Someone asked what I'm doing with all these titles...over the years,
    I've accumulated a lot of songs into a "fake book" that I've assembled
    myself.  I was trying to "cross-index" it - by title, then by "musical
    style", and now, by "artist/composer/etc".  That's why I'm asking.
    
    Some of the more "unusual" & older songs are in there 'cause I sometimes
    play (keyboards) for a much older crowd (and they wanna hear some of
    these!)

    I saw one) says Neil did not write it, it was written by

    I need some help finding a singer/band and song title. Unfortunately,
    the only info I have is the following :
    
    - The singer sounds like Annie Lennox, but I don't think it is her (I
      skipped through her latest CD and the song is not on it. - the song
      is recent)
    
    - The chorus goes something like : "I feel sooo high...."
    
    - At one point she says : "I'll be loose (yours?), I'll be carefree..."
    
    The song is pretty slow, (I guess about 90 bpm). The beat is your
    basic sampled drum loop and the music is mostly low volume strings. 
    
    I need to know who sings this. I listened to this song on the radio in
    my car and am since addicted to it. 
    
    Beware of the incredible rush that will overcome you whilst listening to 
    this song (especially if you are driving).

There are several songs being played on local (CXO) radio stations that I 
believe are all by the same guy(s).  The singer has a very distinctive voice,
but I've never heard the name of the band.  Does anyone recognize the following
titles and can you give me the name of the performing band(s)?

	"Evenflow"
	"I'm Still Alive"
	I don't know the name of this 3rd song, but it's almost spoken, not 
	sung.  Lots of "angst" type lyrics, even some talk about depression
	and the desire to "go on".  I can sing you a few bars, but that 
	wouldn't help...  :-)  Has a lot of lines that start/end with "She
	said"/"I said".

The vocal style on all these songs is similar, sort of a monotone but not 
quite.  "Evenflow" is probably the most musical of the bunch.  It's a punchy,
rocking number.  Any help identifying the artist(s) will be greatly appreciated.

Goldmine: You didn't write "Act Naturally."So how did that song
origionally find it's way to you?

Buck Owens: We were playing in a place in Fresno,California called
The Barn and this young lady named Vonie Morrison,a part writer on
the song(with Johnny Russell-ed.),she had an acetate with six songs
on it,three on each side.She played us five of them and Don Rich and 
I didn't like them.Then she said,"Well the other one is not your style."
But Don Rich put the needle on the acetate and the first thing we heard 
was,"They're gonna put me in the movies,"and I looked at Don and he 
looked at me and we said,"Yeah we'll take it."The first line just knocked
us out.
  She actually sang with me at The Barn.I worked there regularly in the 
early '60s and most bands would have a girl singer in those days.I don't
know if she ever wrote anything else or not.

    were 7 pieces in the band, drums, bass, guitar, keys, congas, and 2

    Ball", etc.), it's the original one you're looking for.

There is a song on "energie" lately that I have never heard the name of nor who
performs it.  It is a ballad about someone who has lost someone dear to him.
The singer sings the song with a very large vocal range, sometimes in the 
basement and then rising to a falsetto soprano.

The words are about "wanting everything, wanting you"  Then they've taken
her away and they might as well take him "down down to hell" etc.

What is the name of this song and who performs it?  It took a bit of getting 
used to but it has grown on me.

    You can find Mountain Stage in Massachusetts on WBUR 90.9 FM on Sunday
    nights, about 6-7 PM I think, it runs for 2 hours.  You should be able
    to pick up WBUR near the NH border.  WICN in Worcester at 90.5 also
    carries the show, not sure what day/time.
    
    It used to have a folk music focus, but they are adding more rock all
    the time.  I heard Juliana Hatfield rockin' out one night and thought
    maybe BUR had dropped the show for a local rock show (she's from
    Boston).

    It's on the album 'The Butterfly Ball' (1974). 
    The song was a number 1 hit in the Netherlands.

Thanks, that is it!  I found the album in the Migros (with the frog playing
guitar on the cover like my son said).  Unfortunately it was quite pricey-
Sf 28.50.  It doesn't seem to have been as big a hit in the US or UK since
neither my husband nor I could find it in those two places.

    This isn't a true "who performed this" question, but it's close.  I
    love the theme song to Fox's sitcom "Flying Blind."  It's pretty
    obvious that it's a Talking Heads or David Byrne song.  The words go
    something like, "I ain't gonna work here no more.  I ain't gonna work
    here no more.  I'm a million miles away from here, but I ain't gonna
    work here no more."

    Awhile back I thought I placed a "Who did this song or what's the name
    of this song" write/reply in MUSIC, but can not find such a note or
    reply. So ...I 'll try again...I asked if anybody knew the name of an
    instrumental that had a Booker T. & the MG's sound. It had been done by
    Paul Shaffer and T.W.M.D.B. on David Letterman. I only comment about
    the song was, Paul had a memeber of the band playing a cow bell , and 
    stated that this was the only R&R song to date that "had a cowbell
    solo" in it. Well, I never found out the name of the song or who did
    it. I even bought two(2) best of Booker T's CD's and it wasn't on

Funny you should mention this.  I was flipping stations in my car yesterday,
and I came across a song in the middle of a heavy guitar solo.  I actually
turned it off, thinking it was a new heavy metal song (which generally don't
interest me).  I then turned back to it, and it took a few seconds to realize
what the song was!

I just assumed it was Focus doing it live.  I know there is a live album out
with that song on it.  I never considered the fact that it might be a cover. 
But the fact that there was no yodeling could indicate it's a cover :-)  I know
of very few rock vocalists who can yodel in that octave without sounding like
Brian Johnson. :-)

    Closing Time is the first song on his latest CD "Future".
    The title track is as good as Closing Time.
    
    Some of the songs have very disturbing lyrics. I bought the CD
    just for Closing Time and didn't like the rest of the songs very much
    and promised the CD to Jim Carroll since he loves disturbing lyrics.
    But before I could pass it onto him, I listened to it a few more times
    and liked a couple more songs, mostly Future and didn't want to give it
    away. I ended up buying another one for Jim ;-)

    By the way, Elton didn't write the song.  It's written by a a woman
    named Leslie Duncan (I *think* that's her name).  She duets with him on

    I clearly remember the first time I ever heard Elton John's
    "Love Song".  I was eighteen and on my first airplane flight.
    I was about as nervous as one could possibly be and the 
    flight attendant noticed how unsettled I was and suggested I
    plug my headphone in and listen to music. Love Song played as
    the plane lifted off the ground. I found myself suddenly 
    completely as ease while listening to the song. 
    
    I too later learned the song on guitar and sang it every 
    so often.

    Sandy Denny, Leslie Duncan, Sandy Duncan...I knew it was there
    somewhere.  I was right on the lp (2nd guess) though.  I loved to
    listen to that song on headphones, the click, click at the beginning

    a yellow jacket.  That album also contains, "Dave", Trippin in Court,

    OK, as the previous replies have said (in bits and pieces):
    
    1. Patti Smith recorded it first, it's on her "Easter" album (78? 79?).  
    It was a minor hit for her.
    
    2. Springsteen wrote the tune. The notes on "Easter" give joint
    songwriting credit to Bruce and Patti.
    
    3. Bruce's live album has his version, the lyrics are a bit different
    (suggests that was Patti's contributions). Not owning a copy I have no
    idea what the songwriting credits say.

  On an impulse, I looked it up in Brian Rust's "Jazz Records 1897-1942".
  It was recorded 4 times in the late 30s by jazz (well, quasi-jazz)
  artists, as follows:
  
    Pinky Tomlin, Jan. '35
    Harry Roy's Tiger-Ragamuffins, Oct. '37
    Ella Logan, Sept. '38
    Van Alexander & His Orchestra, June '39
    
  All these artists dabble in novelty stuff that's stylistically all over
  the map -- which is what I'm guessing this cut is.  8)
  
  Pinky Tomlin (the book says) is a well-known American songwriter, and did
  the first jazz recording of it -- could be the author?   - Jay

    written by Bert Berns for Van Morrison's Them, but there were umpteen

  Bobby Bland's "Turn On Your Lovelight" was a #2 R&B hit in 1962, recorded
  in 1961.  It was recorded for Duke, and the songwriter's credit is to
  "Duchess Music", so I'm guessing it was written for use at Duke, and
  Bland's is the first hit version.
  
  Bobby Bland's heyday was from 1957 -- when "Farther Up the Road" was a hit
  [covered by Eric Clapton as "Further On Up the Road"] -- to 1964, when
  "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" was a hit [covered well by Van Morrison].
  
  In between were hits like "I'll Take Care of You" ('60), "I Pity the Fool"
  ('61), "That's the Way Love Is" ('63), and of course "Lovelight", which
  was probably the song most identified with Bland.  Bland also did arguably
  the classic cover version of T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday" (the version
  that inspired the none-too-shabby Allman Brothers cover).
  
  As of 1957, Bland and BB King were state-of-the-art in blues.  The hits
  slowed after '64, but in the 70s and 80s, Bland has continued as a leading
  soul/blues practioner on labels like Malaco, which cater to the
  sizable/disregarded black audience for blues.  (You'd group him with

    recordings  at Strawberries. I think it was called "Turn On Your Love
    Light". I believe it's made up of his Greatest hits Vol I and II sets.
    At $32.99 I passed on it for now, but as Arnold said, "I'll be Bach".

    I was in a band in the mid 60s that did this and most other dance/party
    tunes of the day. But Love Light was always one of my favorites though I
    never owned a recording of it. Last weekend I heard it on a blues radio
    show.

    someone that's been listening in varying degrees to blues since my older
    brother started bringing me to tiny coffee houses in 1966 to hear
    artists like Muddy Waters, I'd like to point out that there's nothing
    wrong with anyone discovering the talents of Eddie Floyd, Sam and Dave,
    Aretha Franklin, et al. They're no more or less worthy of admiration
    than any of their predecessors. They've earned their place in music
    history. And it's not like they were ever over-hyped to begin with or
    that their popularity is very big now.

    If you ask me, no one makes great music to introduce the masses to
    anybody. Great music is created simply because somebody needed to make
    it. If those in the audience with the ambition use it to trace it's
    roots, that's great.

Sounds good...  Speaking of Bobby Bland double-CD sets, the complete Duke
recordings (his early recordings) are being released chronologically in a
series of 2-CD sets.  I point this out mainly so you'll be alert to the
possibility that the box you saw might be the 3rd in that series.  (Actually
I don't think so, because the 2nd one just appeared a couple of months ago.)

    I guess my previous comment must have come across as sounding a bit
    snobbish! Not for one moment did I intend to criticise people who
    listen to Aretha or Sam and Dave (I still think Aretha Franklin has the
    best black female voice on this earth!). The Blues Brothers
    film/records (what I referred to as the "Blues Brothers Phenomenon",
    Ron!), and the subsequent interest in soul/R&B music that they aroused,
    still only had a relatively superficial effect on the popularity of the
    genre. In other words, the sales of Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett and
    Eddie Floyd albums probably doubled, but Joe Public still doesn't know
    who Arthur Alexander or Lee Dorsey are/were. 
    
    Nothing particularly surprising about that; in fact, it was probably
    fairly predictable. And I'm not for one moment suggesting that the
    artists covered in the Blues Brothers film (or "The Commitments") are
    any less valid than the relative unknowns that I listed above. 
    
    Perhaps we should be grateful for small mercies. Looking into my
    crystal ball, I see a bleak future where Michael "Fa-Fa-Fa" Bolton tours
    Europe heading the "Great R&B All-Stars Revival"! Uughrr...

I'm seeking help trying to remember the name of a male singer who was featured
on NPR's Morning Edition this morning. They likened him to a mix between Taj
Mahal and Bonnie Raitt. His name is strange (to my ears anyway) and is two
short syllables that have a rhythm maybe like "sha na" or something. I think
he's a blues singer but now they described his music as "less is more" and he's
doing simpler songs. Is this an easy or hard one? Also posted in the "Blues and

A friend asks the following. The "article" referred to was a radio story on
NPR's All Things Considered. If anyone knows the name of the group or CD, I'll

    The other day there was an article about a bunch of musicians on
    Martha's Vineyard who got together and recorded a CD.  The music was a
    mixed bag of styles but from what they played it sounded like something
    I would want. Do you recall the name of the CD?  No distribution
    information was given and I suspect I'll have a hard time finding it,
    but without a title I'll get nowhere.  As I recall the title is about a
    road to a cabin or something like that.

I didn't heard the NPR story but I heard something on some folk program 
recently and I think you might have heard about a new release coordinated by
Christine Lavin.  Something about getting together a bunch of
singer/songwriters in  a house (her house?) with an informal studio in the back
or something.  Somehow it was  associated with the Wintertide Coffeehouse in
Vineyard Haven but I don't  remember how.  I think this was a new release 
different from her previous Vineyard/Wintertide compilation but I'm not 
sure.  Perhaps someone else, not so vague, could supply some details or 
the people in the FOLK conference may know more.  Hope that helps you find it.

    I didn't hear the NPR story, but the Glob had an article about a CD

My friend replies as follows:

    I poked around the Internet last night and I found an interesting news
    group "alt.radio.networks.npr".  Among the postings here was a synopsis 
    of the ATC shows.  I read through a few of these and found what I was 
    looking for.  The title of the CD is "Follow That Road" and it was
    compiled  by Christine Lavin.  In addition, a phone number was listed
    for a service which sells most music heard on NPR, 800 756-8742.  

    There were a lot of other interesting posts here as well.  Lots of
    comments on ATC stories, some consider NPR too liberal, others too
    conservative. Interesting reading.

    Alas, not all CD's have the lyrics printed in 'em these days,
    especially re-releaed of vinyl.  Does anybody know have the correct
    lyric to this line in U2's "Bad" (off "Unforgettable Fire" or "Wide

    yesterday as i was feeling a little under the weather...went home, made
    a cup of tea and flopped on the day bed....;")....just in time to see
    the last 10 minutes of the 'living daylights' with timothy dalton as

    asked me to' at the end of the movie and all through the credits..of
    course i listend intently and it was the song i thought it was,
    however, it wasnt' done by celine dion..it was done by Patti
    Labelle...so there ya go...search her releases to find it...however,

    song...she would have done it better than Patti.......who did  a nice

    Yup, the Robert Gordon album with RED HOT does indeed feature Link
    Wray.  That's the only version of the song that I have heard, but I do
    suspect it was a remake of the song, as previously mentioned.  I do

    The singer's name is Maggie Reilly. She is a Scots lass and was in a
    band called Cado Belle in the mid late 70's. They released 1 possibly

  Big Joe Williams wrote "Baby Please Don't Go", I'm pretty sure...  He
  recorded it dozens of times, it became identified with him.  The 50s
  recording of it included in the Smithsonian blues anthology was a later
  one -- it might go back as far as the late 30s.  [I can check authorship
  in the Smithsonian booklet.]

  It must've been covered several dozens of times on record, by blues, pop,

  I'm glad someone chimed in about "Big Ten Inch"...  I had no idea.
  
  I checked up on "Baby Please Don't Go".  As I thought, Big Joe Williams is
  credited with authorship of the song, and it's the song most identified
  with him.  (Others are "Crawling King Snake" -- he did the 1st commercial
  recording of this old Mississippi standard in '41 -- and "Highway 49".)
  
  He first recorded "Baby Please Don't Go" in 1935 for Bluebird (this
  version is on the Smithsonian 4-CD anthology "The Blues").
  
  I also have a 1941 recording of BPDG featuring him and Sonny Boy (#1, John
  Lee) Williamson, which is on the excellent (budget) Bluebird CD, "Throw a
  Boogie Woogie".  Sonny Boy Williamson and Big Joe Williams each do 8 tunes
  [includes the original "Crawling King Snake", a remake of Highway 49",
  and SBW's 1937 "Good Morning School Girl".]  Plenty of Williams' 9-string
  guitar and Williamson's harp, all over this record.

  I say Williams is "credited" with authorship because, according to the
  Smithsonian, he "got" the song from his wife, St. Louis Bessie Mae Smith:

  "When she heard it on the jukebox of the tavern below their apartment, she
  ran down to see who had stolen her song.  Evidently she was not pleased,
  for she and Joe are said to have had quite an argument."
  
  Big Joe was one of blues' legendary fighters (not mentioned in the
  Smithsonian notes) -- Bessie Mae must've been a piece of work herself.

  Anyway, apparently Bessie Mae Smith is the actual, uncredited author of
  Big Joe Williams' trademark song.  Jay

One of the best versions of "Baby Please Don't Go" is by Beausoleil (sp?)
with Michael Ducette (sp?).  This is a Cajun version with only the first
verse sung in English - the rest being in Cajun/French.

    The Righteous Bros. were hardly the "artists who first released it. Al
    Hibbler had a hit with it in 1955, and there was an orchestral hit

    As others have noted, the Righteous Brothers recorded the version
    of "Unchained Melody" used in "Ghost."  Its been recorded by lots
    of people, but the Righteous Bros recording is probably the most
    popular.
    
    Actually, the song is a Bobby Hatfield solo-- Bill Medley, (the other
    "brother") doesn't sing on it.

   As a guitartist, I can't believe I can't remember who did this song, nor

    You'll definitely find it on "Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits" (CBS,
    1970?). It also contains "Oh Well - Part 2" which was the B-side to the
    original single, an almost medieval-sounding instrumental...totally
    different from Part 1.
    
    Great album - also contains The Green Manalishi, Need Your Love So Bad,
    Shake Your Moneymaker, Man Of The World, Albatross, etc.

    The original studio version of "Oh Well" is on the album "Then Play
    On".  There's also a killer live version recorded at the Boston Tea
    Party in 1969, when Green, Kirwan and Spencer were all in the band.
    Various packagings of different Tea Party tracks have shown up on CD;
    "In Boston Live" is one of them, but not sure if Oh Well is included
    in that particular set.

    At the risk of providing more information than the original poster
    asked for, I think there's a discrepancy between the UK and US versions
    of "Then Play On" (much as there was between the early Stones albums on
    Decca). I've got the UK version of "Then Play On" and Oh Well"
    definitely isn't on it, probably because there was a (fairly) strict
    policy of keeping singles and albums seperate in those days..
    
    Actually, the comparison with the Stones is fairly appropriate. They
    too left their early singles (e.g. "Satisfaction", "The Last Time") OFF
    their UK albums, but included them on the US LPs.

    The song in question is "Could it be Magic" written by Barry Manilow.
    There are at least two recorded versions I know about.
    
    1. Barry Manilow version...slow, sung like a ballad.
    2. Take That...fast, disco style.

    bit-- he fully acknowledged the original piece, and did not attempt
    to disguise it at all.  
    
    Technically, I would say Manilow is still the composer of "Could This
    Be the Magic" (I think that's the title), even though he only adapted 
    a theme from a different composer.  There are significant departures
    from the original work (the intro and outro are direct steals, but
    the "song" itself is only loosely based on the original).  I don't
    see this as different than countless "Variations on a Theme by
    Composer XYZ" compositions credited to the creator of the variations
    (e.g., Sor's "Variations on a Theme by Mozart").

    enough Chopin in there such that I would have to regard crediting 
    it as anything but "Chopin/Manilow" as "plagiarism".

    It's the Chopin C-minor Prelude (one of 24, though I can't remember
    which one).  The "intro" is in fact note-for-note the first section of
    the prelude, and the "outro" is note-for-note the last 8 measures of
    the prelude.  And all the stuff in between is painful to hear IMO.
    I cringe just thinking of it.

    Somebody ought to tell this Chopin guy, because Barry's getting all the
    royalties ;^)
    
    I put Barry as the composer because the person who asked is probably
    looking for sheet music of the song "Could it be Magic" not the sheet

    Manilow and his usual co-writers put all new songs together, yet
    they sounded as though this album came out of some smoky blues/jazz
    club the Barry said his step-father would sneak him into as a kid.
    
    Barry goes for the commercial airplay stuff, but he's always puts
    at least one or two gems into most of his releases.  I have one
    of his first albums that has a killer version of Avenue C on it.
