(Cross-posted in MUSIC and RECORDS.) Would anyone have any information about a band called Rare Bird? I read one tiny little thing about them on usenet a while back (something like, "Their song _As Your Mind Flies By_ is one of the HEAVIEST songs I've ever heard") that made me think I might like them, but I don't know anything else about them. The only re- cording of theirs that I can find as available is something called _Sympathy_, and no contents were listed. If anyone knows, I'd be interested in what their instrumen- tation lineup is, and whether _AYMFB_ is on _Sympathy_. Any other info you have and care to share would be welcomed. Thanks for any help. --- Shawn H.

Rare Bird were from the UK, recorded for Charisma there (not sure of
their US label). "Sympathy" was their best known tune, and the only
one I have (on a Charisma compilation). Instrumentation (from memory)
like Deep Purple/Spooky Tooth...guitar, bass, organ,
drums. And dat's all I know...

"As Your Mind Flies By" is on _Sympathy_ - many years ago, I came across
AYMFB on a Charisma compilation album and liked it enough to venture
further. The instrumentation is is organ/keys, piano/keys, bass,
drums. No guitar. Pigeon-hole: mid-70's progressive stuff (1976 is
the album's date). Somewhat similar in sound to Van Der Graaf,
perhaps. I think "Hammerhead" is similar in heavy-ness to AYMFB. The
title track "Sympathy" is a pseudo-ballad (correct me if I'm wrong,
Brian). My ancient JEM Import's catalogue lists two other albums,
"Born Again", and "Rare Bird (Flashback)" - latter is probably a
re-release of an early album.
Digging through old stuff reminds me of pawing through import bins in
search of progressive rock stuff, listening to stuff that I was too
young to hear fresh, then slowly catching up with the new music scene.
