Conference mr1pst::music

    Here's another local airplay opportunity that I've found out about.
    Haven't tried it yet.  The show is on station WHRB, 95.3 FM Sunday
    nights from midnight until 6 AM Monday morning and is called, 
    "WHRB's Record Hospital".  Send demos to:

    They also have a show called "Ultrasound" running from 12:30 AM to 1:30 AM 
    Wednesday mornings.  I'm not sure if this is also a local talent show.
    I can't pick up the station from where I'm at (Marlboro) so anyone that
    knows, feel free to correct me.

Is the Wharfield show- or, for that matter, the WHRBy one- open to all styles of
music? Whenever I see no mention of this, I tend to think that rock, so-called
"New Age," and other relatively "pop" genres are more or less dominant.

I've been reluctant to contribute things to Commusic, f'rinstance, due to the
relatively low "electronic content" of my songs. Sure, I use a sequencer and
synths, but the dominant style of most of my stuff is more folk/folk-rock than
anything else; a *large* proportion focus on Christian topics, and I've found
such a prevalent anti-Christian bias in both notes conferences and
"market-oriented" forums (such as radio shows, music mags) that I'm not
very confident of the music itself being taken seriously.

    I don't know about the WHRB show.  But, Harvey plays just about any
    type of music on BMC, so long as it's quality stuff.  Most of it is
    rock.  But, last night I also heard some country.  He has not placed
    any restrictions on the type of music.

    I just spoke with Harvey Wharfield about the "Boston Music Showcase"
    request line.  Folks can make requests for the show on the hotline
    but only during the time of the show since the numbers are used for
    regular business other times.

    I have a tune I've been trying to "get to" Dr. Demento.
    
    Anyone have any idea of how I might do that.  I don't even know what
    local radio stations carry him (I'm in Nashua, NH).

    
    WZLX (100.7) FM in Boston used to carry the Demento show on Sunday
    night.
    
    I believe the outfit that produces The King Biscuit Flour Hour produces
    the Doctah (Westwood One) which probably doens't help one iota...

    Hi folks. I know this may *seem* extreme, but please understand that it
    is necessary. I cannot allow the promotion of songs for airplay in this
    conference. People have tried to sneak record promotions into "Who's
    Gigging Where" and I've had to stop them.
    
    There has been a continuing struggle over the "legality" of the "Who's
    Gigging Where" note and we've had to draw some lines. The biggest line
    we've drawn is the direct promotion of a recording *in any way*.
    
    BELIEVE ME - I have recordings I'd like to plug, songs I'd like to have
    requested for airplay, etc. But I can't, because it's the rule here
    (and it applies to EVERYBODY).
    
    I have no problem with a casual request for requests, as it were, but
    if interpretation of the moderator enters into it, then the line
    becomes gray and the rule becomes useless.

    So if you want to plug a song, please use your own mailing list or
    perhaps you might want in on the mailing list mentioned in note # 32.
    
    Please, also understand that "Who's Gigging" is *not* an appropriate
    place to plug records. Refrain from the "Record Release Party" bombast
    because there is a definite danger I will have to stop the note
    otherwise. I'm serious folks, I've gotten heat from personnel and had
    to explain very carefully what we allowed in that note. Any promotion
    beyond "here's who we are, where we are and what we play" simply cannot
    be tolerated.

The way we fixed this problem in another notesfile that I frequent. We had 
people who were in no way associated with the band in question post the 
scheduled dates as public awareness announcements. That way people know where 
the music is happening and people are not plugging outside businesses that 
they belong to.

    Well, I got some airplay ("Hot Oil" from the "Tantara" album) on Boston 
    Music Showcase!  Happened last Sunday night.  But, because I was at the 
    hospital (my wife gave birth to a baby girl last Thursday, but she has 
    the chiken pox ...) I missed all but the last hour or so of the show.  
    Rats, rats, rats!  Anyway, with the Spring Music Conference coming up,
    Harvey indicated BMS is pretty much filled until May.  So, I asked him
    how many requests I would need for the tune to get play in May.  He
    indicated about 10 to 15 minimum, but he told me to wait until the 26th 
    earliest to get the requests in.  I've got friends that have heard it
    and plan to request.  :)
