Well, seemed sor tof close to the topic title...

Can anybody recommend a music attorney that has dealt with R&B/pop
material? Friend of mine asked me to look around for him. THanks.

Would an attorney who has specialized in matters specific to an
artist in general be of any help to your friend? A close friend
of mine can recommend someone who has been involved with legal
matters especially those related to royalties and fine print
matters involving his work as a character artist.

| | I started a note on Promotions in the last incarnation of MUSIC
and got some really good feedback from you folks and here I am again
asking for ideas, info, etc. I have yet to get as far with promoting a
concert as actually putting my money where my mouth is....reason being,
I don't have any money and the people that were backing me, backed out
    the door.
Well, I've got a new partner and I'm once again going to try and
work a deal here locally to put together a concert. I've got all my
facts and figures and now, I'm at the stage of the game where I'm
    trying to set the date.
What I need to know is, what money is expected when? I mean do I
have to front the band's minimum when signing a contract? Also, what
else does the Promoter traditionally do besides handle auditorium
logistics, insurance, sound & lighting (if need be), etc? Also, I
working on a big act/venue. This is not a club gig.

In short, do you have a copy of the book "The Business of Music"?

I've been meaning to pick it up purely for general interest but
I think it can be one good source of information for you.

Also talking with someone who does promotion as well as those
who get paid (or who sometimes don't) may also be helpfull, get
both sides, especially the bands because most likely they will
tell you things that will help you better serve them in the long
    	run.

One problem with the archived conferences is we loose the
discussion flow on some interesting topics. Where's that
    	complaint note?

I'm curious as to how Guns 'n Roses ever got their we'll play
when when we're good and read contract for the current tour. It
seems a lot to ask that shows start anywhere betwen 9 and 1 a.m.

Who's paying the over time or whatever to the venue staff?

I think in his time Peter Grant did some revolutionary
things for a manager in terms of the percentage of take
he got from the door. Too bad he never wrote a book on
    	how he managed promoters, huh?

in honor of I don't know what, some 60s issues that was big at the time.
They didn't shut down and I went to the show even though I was "on strike"
at the time.

All that comes under my misc. costs for the auditorium logistics.
It's the cheapest part of the whole deal. Insurance....now that a

          -< Danny Goldberg - Swan Swong / Modern Records / Nirvana? >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this interesting; Danny Goldberg, the former VP for Swan
Song went on to his own ventures at Modern Records and now I see
a reference to a Danny Goldberg as mangager of Nirvana in association
with Gold Mountain Entertainment. Is it the same person? I knew
someone by the name of Susan Silver was their manager but maybe
things have changed. The Danny mentioned had a partner with a
sirname of Silva. I would guess that Nirvana's single "Sliver"
was named somewhat after one of them.

My band (original rock) was approached by a management team who are
interested in us. They gave us a contract and told us to get a lawyer
and go over it. We're all cynical when it comes to this business as
we've been in it for a while and been blown a lot of big talk that
got us nowhere. What I'm looking for is advice, any and all will be
    gladly taken.

o What's an average % cut for management?

      o What's the average term for a contract? (6 mos, 2 years?)

o What should we look out for? (besides everything)

Anything else you can think of, and if anyone knows a good lawyer who's
familiar with this sort of stuff.

I manage Slipknot, First of all let me state that I am not a
professional manager in that I do not have several bands and make my
living from management. I get 10% of the gross/show. Managers/agents
generally make anywhere between 8% - 20%

> o What's the average term for a contract? (6 mos, 2 years?)
The contract should be for a term that you feel comfortable with.
I would suggest 6 months for the first contract and if you like what
they're doing renew for a year. I would never make the contract longer
than one year and they probably wouldn't either. It is always best to re-
negotiate or at least review the contract yearly.
