Conference mr1pst::music

    I have heard a few cuts off the first album, which is what drove me to
    buy "Pornografitti".  The first one is called "Extreme" as you may have
    guessed, and, as I recall, is a bit harder than "Extreme II".  But
    they're a solid band, and as (I think with K.C.) I was much more
    impressed with the other stuff than the two hit tracks (Nuno is quite
    talented).  I was however, a little turned off by Nuno's stunt of
    insuring his hands for 5 million through Lloyd's of London.  I wonder
    if his career to date is worth the 5 mil, but we can only hope for the
    future.  Maybe he (or his agent) was just implying that he is as
    competent as some of the other name guitarists who have done the 5 mil
    policy through Lloyd's, and if he keeps up his current pace, I might
    tend to agree.

    I read an article in the Scene section of the Herald today that said they
aren't making much money yet.  I guess it takes time when your at the mercy
of the record companies and you have no track record yet.  I saw these guys
many times when they were playing the circuit in Boston.  Great live shows,
kind of reminded me of Aerosmith, lots of energy.  In fact I saw them at the
Channel one night probably 4 years ago and they stopped in the middle of
the set and Gary and Nuno played 'More Than Words' sitting on the edge of the
stage.  It's strange to think this was the record that got them noticed
nationally becuase they are definetly a much harder band.

I'm not much of a "pop" and/or "rock" type- not that I don't like good examples
of either, but much of my music *listening* is radio, and stations, as we all
know, intentionally stick to a pretty well-defined market, and thus certain types
of music. Given that, and the "stick to the playlist" attitude, I don't like
enough of what's played to tune in to any such station except on a "drop-in"
basis; that's how I heard "More Than Words" and later, "Hole in My Heart."

What I find is that these songs are *different* from your average pop/rock song,
and they're different in a *good* way. Good harmonies that you can hear, nice
vocals that aren't either masked by gobs of special effects or distorted by
"high energy screaming" as it pretty typical these days. I haven't heard their
harder stuff, but I'd venture a guess that it's more the same than different as
compared to other bands in the hard rock genre. I think folks in general home
in pretty quickly on the combination of "different and good."

    They went to Hudson High School.  One of the members, Nuno (sp)
    graduated 1yr behind me.  I can still here the principal calling his 
    name over the loud speeker "Nuno Bentencort to the office please" 
    You heard his name everyday.

    Basicly. I was in Lou's class also. Back then Nuno was a very short
    short haired geek. He dropped out of high school. I don't know where
    the rest of the band is from.

       I know that Gary, the singer grew up in Malden with his brother
    Marky who plays for FLESH.  Flesh is currently recording their first
    album in L.A.

    Gary used to play in a band years ago called The Dream.  I know, my
    very-ex band used to do gigs with them all the time (oh, those Tuesday
    night memories from Bunratty's...aack!)!
    
    The Dream reached some popular local status...recording a cool demo in
    town and releasing a video for the single "Mutha" (yeah, the one that
    appears on the first Extreme album!).  It was entered in MTV's Basement
    Tapes video contest, and won.  The video received some moderate
    rotation on MTV and local-based V66.  Just after the video was shot,
    Gary and Nuno hooked up...kicked out the two guitarist from The Dream,
    and went on from there (in fact, Nuno was at the video shoot for
    Mutha...so was I).  One thing I don't get is how Nuno talks up how he
    wrote "Mutha as a tip of the hat to his guitar idol Van Halen" when the
    song was written and recorded by The Dream long before Nuno was in the
    band?!
    
    Soon after, some TV network wanted to air a show on a local rock band
    called The Dream.  The rights were sold to the name, and Gary changed
    the band to Extreme (phonetically "Ex-Dream").
    
    Later in the picture, Pat Badger was nabbed from a now-popular (but
    then nobody) band called In The Pink.  I know, I was ITP's original
    soundman.  The lineup has remained the same ever since.
    
    The first album was *ok*.  Lyrically weak, and stylistically confused,
    IMVHO.  The second album showed some maturity in the material, even
    those it was not nec. "new" material.  The songs were more cohesive,
    but still there is some maturity in performance that I think this band
    needs to achieve.  Some parts on PG I just have to asks "WTF did they
    stick THAT in there?!?"  Some vocal and guitar things just don't work.
    
    I'm looking forward to their next release...

    Any comments on "III Sides To Every Story" ??  I think it is a great
    cd, they seem to expand on Pornagrafitti in that there are a handful of
    styles that they go after. I guess I like the first part "Yours" the
    song "Warheads" is humorous, and really rocks.
    
    I hear a rumor of a "FREE" concert being given by them somewhere inthe
    Boston area...anyone out there with any info on that ??  I'd like to
    check them out live. I met Nuno last year, the night before
    Thanksgiving in Strawberries in Shrewsbury. I was pretty surprised that
    considering how packed the store was, noone else seem to recognize him.
    OK, they're not Huge yet, but for local guys who had 2 pretty big hits,
    and MTV rotation, I thought someone else would approach him...I finally
    did when it got less crowded in there, and we chatted for a bit, he was
    pretty laid-back, and talked about doing some recording in England
    (Abbey Road as it turns out) and finishing the album "next year" (92).
    
    I ended up buying sheet music to "Hole Hearted" and had him autograph
    it, he was cool all around. I hope they do well, I've heard that they
    are all pretty nice guys, and my fiance' knows Paul and Mark, the
    brothers who are in FLesh...and we're waiting for Them to be back in
    the area too...

    I think the new album is OK....I was bummed out last week, becuase when
    we were in the Studio recording our album, Nuno and their producer were
    doing a dance re-mix of Rest in Peace in the studio next door....yuck....
    I hate when people do that to songs.

    Gee..i was at those "re-mix" sessions....probably bumped into ya 
    and didn't realize it.   :*)
    Actually, the "re mix" was part of a project that Nuno is into
    at the moment. He signed a local (Boston) rap group called
    Top Choice Clique to his label (Color Blind Records) and is
    co-producing them as well as adding some guitar and was recording
    them at that studio. 
    The Rest in Peace dance re-mix was produced by one of the TCC guys
    as well as Nuno with additional lyrics by John P of TCC.
    John P also appears on Extreme's "Cupids Dead" off 3 Sides to every
    story, he does the "rap" at the end of the song.
    TCC will release their album in March.

"Whole Hearted" (or is the title "Whole In My Heart"?). Dunno where you 
can get a copy though, I don't remember seeing an Extreme video collection
out there; although I never looked, so there might be one.

    They released a compilation of all their vids up to More than words,
    (including Hole hearted/which also features Fran Sheenhan of "Boston"
    fame) and can be found at your favorite music store.

    I've heard Paul Geary the drummer, has left the band...anyone know

    Gary Cherone is playing the lead in a production of Jesus Christ
    Superstar in Cambridge...anyone seen this, I've heard good things said
    about it
    
    Gary and Nuno were attendees at the FLESH  show recently at Sir
    Morgan's Cove in Worcester, watchin' their brothers jam...it was a
    rockin' show

    Paul's left to persue the managemant end of the business, thats always
    been his strong point anyway. Most people don't realize that Paul is 
    a huge reason why the Extreme has survived and flourished all these
    years. No doubt he will do very well.

    Tom...i was just curious about what the "style" was on 3 sides that you
    liked more ( than on waiting for the punchline ).

    	Well, to me, 3 Sides had more harmony vocals and seemed to
    	be a cool combination of hard rock and the Beatles.  A few
    	tunes were very John-like to me.  This one sounds less
    	"busy" and more hard rock with less harmony.
    
    	It's a good cd, just not one I personally would listen to
    	very often.

    I see what you mean as far as the texture of the 2 albums.
    I also really like 3 sides because of the softer stuff and the 
    "3rd side" and i feel the album was very much overlooked.
    
    I feel the new album tho is much more focused (which was a big knock
    against Extreme in the past).
    I also think they've matured quite a bit musically and that this album
    really brings that out.
