    	Last Christmas, on VH-1, I saw a video of Dr. John and Leon Redbone
    doing 'Frosty the Snowman'.  I suppose it will be around again this
    year, but my local cable doesn't have VH-1.  I didn't see what (if at
    all) album it was on, but would kill for a recording (preferably CD). 
    I've checked the Redbone and Dr. John sections of numerous record
    stores, and nothing.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    I am looking for an instrumental version of the Eagles song
    "Desperado".  I can recall hearing it played on the radio maybe 2-3
    times over the same number of years.  Problem is I don't remember the
    radio stations I heard it on.
    
    What I've done to date.  I've called a number of radio stations.  No
    one recalls an instrumental version.  I've gone to several record
    stores looking in their books and looking at every tape in the
    instrumental section.  The books only show vocals done by various
    artists.  I've called Tower Records in Boston.  Without a group
    (artist's) name, they couldn't do anything.
    
    I picked up one of those singalong tapes that allow you to cancel out
    the vocal in the hope that the remaining instrumental would be close. 
    No luck.   Without the vocal for the melody, the rest is blah.
    
    HELP!!!!  Can anyone remember hearing an instrumental version???  If
    so,  who did it?  If not, can you suggest any other ways to find out?

		I haven't heard the Wilson Phillips song, so I'm going
	strictly by the title.

		Assuming it's the same song, the older version of it
	that I'm familiar with is the one done by Rod Stewart.

    I put this request in over two years ago, and someone did respond. But I 
    need to make this request again, as it is urgent I find this material. The
    copy someone sent me two years ago was accidentally lost.
    
    I am looking for an old (out-of-print, to say the least) recording by Bing
    Crosby. The album was entitled "HOW LOVELY IS CHRISTMAS" and it was a 
    story narrated by Crosby mixed in with some music. The only songs I can 
    remember from it at this time are the title song and a tune called "An Axe,
    An Apple, and a Buckskin Jacket". I have a beat-up old album copy of it, 
    but I'd like to get a nice recording of this if possible (no skips or 
    scratches). 
    
    I live in Marlboro and work in Shrewsbury, Mass. I'm hoping that the person
    who originally sent me a nice tape copy a couple of years ago will read 
    this request again and get in touch with me as soon as possible...if not, 
    I'll take a copy by anyone who may have it.

Was it a live performance?  A few months ago they played a live version
by the Grateful Dead on the local alternative station for a while.  I 
wasn't terribly impressed (of course, I thought the Dead peaked at
American Beauty :-).

    its not on Jerry's lastest its on the Dead's live 2cd "Without a Net"
    the singer is Brent Mydland so it might not sound like its the dead cuz
    you don't hear Jerry or Bob singing lead vocals....

    It could be the CSN version, they've been pushing that track to sell
    the box set. Stills is singing, and his voice sounds grittier than the
    usual CSN harmony.

    Well, there's been lots of covers of that tune.  Mike Bloomfield and Al
    Kooper did one on their live album back in 68 or whenever...
    
    It's most likely it's CSN you heard, though, as it's one of the
    "goodies" from the new box set.

    Huey Lewis and the News had a big hit with "Heart and Soul", and the
    Monkees had a minor '87 comeback hit with "Heart and Soul" as well. 
    I think there was another group that had a tune by the same name as
    well, but the name of the group escapes me.
    
    

    Anyone know the name of the channel 7(WHDH) news, theme song?  I would
    like to know the name of the song and who performs it.  I have a hunch
    that it might be a John Tesh piece, but that's just a guess.

    Hmmm, nice try, but I don't think either of those are the ones I'm
    looking for.  Have you ever been to a party where there's a piano, and
    no one really knows how to play?  Inevitably, someone will come along
    and start tapping out this simple melody of "Heart and Soul", which is
    really only one step up from "Chopsticks" on the skill and coordination
    scale.  (You may often hear two young kids playing this as a duet, driving
    their parents bonkers.)  About that time, someone else will come along and
    slam the piano key-cover down on said person's fingers.  Many a musical 
    career has been cut short this way, I'm sure.
    
    In terms of what I need it for (as mentioned in Music V3), I want to do
    a kite ballet in the same vein as "Feelings/I Feel Good," only this
    time, I'd like to do this (stupid and sickening) "Heart and Soul"
    backed up with Jake and Elwood doing "I'm a Soul Man."
    
    Anyone have any idea if this perennial favorite has ever been recorded?
    ("heart and soul" that is, I've got the Blues Brothers handled.)

    Re .24: Jan and Dean did a version of "Heart and Soul," but it may be
    more trouble finding it than it's worth... Still, their unique vocal
    harmonies added a piquant quality to that perennial favorite, and
    should go very well indeed with "Soul Man". In fact, I think that this
    is a playlist that will go down in history.

The amateur piano piece is Hoagy Carmichael's "Heart and Soul".

Someone started playing it on the electric piano at my #1 son's wedding.  #2 son
sneaked over and unplugged the box.  The piano player in the wedding band saw 
us do it and played "Heart and Soul" in the next set himself, professionally, on
the acoustic piano, complete with improvisation.  It's really a good little 
song with a very nice bridge and a winning chord progression.

    
    I never thought it would be Hoagy!  Be that as it may, I went on a
    search and acquire mission yesterday and found the Jan & Dean version.
    It wasn't _exactly_ what I was looking for, since it was done in a sort
    of Do-Wop style (instead of schmaltzy piano...), but it truly is
    sickening enough for my purposes.  And, it is the same melody that I
    had been thinking of.
    
    I put the two pieces together... about 45 seconds of Jan & Dean, then
    the sound of "the record" being ripped from the turntable (I actually
    used an old Blondie album for this part), then The Blues Brothers Soul
    Man.  Quite riotous, and exactly what I was looking for!

Hey Billy-bob,

	If you're still looking for a semi-serious rendition of "H&S", you
might want to check out the soundtrack for the movie "Big" (if no soundtrack is
available you could rent the movie and dub the section I'm talking about).
During one scene, Tom Hanks steps onto a giant, foot-activated keyboard and
starts tapping out some sounds.  He is joined by Robert Loggia and they perform
a credible version of "H&S".  There might be enough there for what you need.

    was originally released on Sun, I think (but I'm no expert).

	The music for the SoSF theme is credited to John Elizade and Pat
	Williams.  It didn't say if they wrote it and/or performed it.
	My guess would be they wrote it, but maybe you can use the information
	to find the performers.

	for this _type_ of music (is it a sort of funk?) - therefore 
	your reply is very valuable as a 'trace'.

	Especially, I like the complex drum rhythm which dominates (IMO)
	the theme and makes it a bit 'hectic', since I'm a drummer myself.

Honky Tonk Pts 1 and 2 was on King and much anthologized.  Honky Tonk Pt. 2 
was the hit, so you want to watch out for anthologies that omit Part 1.  On
the particular version I have, Part 1 is on side 1 of the LP and part 2 
was on side 2.  Talk about not being clear on the concept.

    I'm looking for the title of what I think is a 50's tune.  I don't
    remember the words, but I remember the "story", sort of, that this
    song told.  It was a typical "teen love" story ... the boy have the
    girl his letter-sweater.  The boy died.  A year later, the girl was in
    a daze (?) and knocked on the door where the boy lived.  The father
    answered the door and said something like "How can you do this, he died
    a year ago today".  . . . then some eerie sounds and the girl is at
    the cemetary . . .
    
    I only want the title/artist to settle a "debate" with someone!

    the train and the girl running back to get the ring the boy gave her
    -- but I am certain that is a different story.
    
    I think the story is that the boy meets the girl at a high school dance or
    prom, she says she feels suddenly very cold, he gives her his sweater to 
    wear, drops her home, returns to get the sweater that night or the next day,
    the father says "How can you be so cruel - she died a year ago today" -
    and there is an eerie cemetary scene then where the boy finds his
    sweater on her grave.  I can almost think of the name of it....
    
    

    I still think her name might be Laura in both songs...

    I recall this got some adults up in arms because in the last verse the
    lead voice is quite muffled and sings "..I GOT my baby back.."

	Nope.  That was Mark Dinning's "Teen Angel".  "Tell Laura I love Her"
	(by Ray Peterson) involved the hero being killed in an auto race.  His 
	last words were the song's title.

	The song here was "Laurie (Strange Things Happen in this World)" by
	Dickie Lee.  Lee was also responsible for that other 'death rock' 
	classic, "Patches".

	.0 has the scenario backwards.  Laurie was the one who had died a year
	to the day previous to the song's story.

    Re .4: And great songs all! I especially like the utter disregard for
    rhyme schemes in "Laurie" - lines like "Suddenly she asked for my
    sweater; she said she was very, very cold." And "Tell Laura I Love Her"
    is probably my favorite dead-teenager song of all time. Get this:
    "...and as they pulled him from the twisted wreck, with his dying
    breath, they heard him say <dum dum dum dum> 'Tell Laura I *love*
    her'". (That part always gets to me, although "Tell Laura I... <thud>"
    might have been even more, oh, pop-song verite, if you get my drift.)
    
    As for the relative literary merit of each song, well, the character
    motivations in both "Laura" and "Laurie" were more straighforward than
    those in "Teen Angel". I mean, the girl runs _away_ from her boyfriend
    to risk her life for a _class ring_? A high school ring, yet - must
    run, what, $19.95? Some kind of priorities that kid had... kind of like
    Anna Karenina, now that I come to think of it.
    
    [Trivia note: I first heard "Teen Angel" sung by a guest on the "Mike
    Douglas Show" - Liberace. To me, that will always be the definitive
    rendition.]

    	Does anyone remember an Artist in the early 70's going by
    the name of Python Lee Jackson? There were stories that it was
    Rod Stewart, under a pseudo-name. I used to have the 8-track and
    am trying to remember the "hit" song from the release. BTW it
    did sound like Rod Stewart.
    
          I am also trying to find an English Import record from the
    mid-seventies by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. It was a live
    album and included Vambo and Tomahawk Kid.

    i am looking for an album that was issued about 1970. It featured the
    famous Brecker brothers on horns (trumpet and alto sax) had a blood
    sweat and tears type lead vocalist and the young and impressive Billy
    cobham on drums. They had a couple of albums out. The first album is
    the one I'm looking for the name of the band (and in the case of thise
    album, the title of the album is the same) was DREAMS. Had a pretty
    neat cover with artwork of guys in topcoats and derbnys kind of
    floating towards a blue sky with wihite clouds as i recall. Anyone

    Python Lee Jackson (dunno if it was someone's name or a band name) had
    an album called "In A Broken Dream", which indeed had old J. Rod
    himself singing on the title tune and one or two others.  It surfaced
    immediately after Rod had gone top-10 with "Maggie May".  The US issue
    was on the GRT label.

    I am looking for information regarding Gary Glitter's song, Hey Rock 'N
    Roll Part II.  If I haven't got the title completely correct, please
    excuse me.  They play part of this song at numerous sporting events
    when the home team scores.  Anyhow, I'd like to purchase this song.
    Can you tell me if this was a single or part of an album?  Not being a
    real music buff I honestly can't say I am familiar with Gary Glitter's
    work.
    
    I wish I even knew when this song was published.  I went to a
    Strawberrys' music store and looked for the song in their tltle listing
    book under "H" but foung nothing. I looked up Gary Glitter in the
    listing by artist and found only one entry.  It was for a Hits of the
    70's album, Vol. 8 "Have a Nice Day".  If he was popular in the 70's I
    guess I missed it.  I'm over forty and I thought I knew most of the
    popular rock artists of the era.  I guess not.  Perhaps one of you

    If its the same song..then its "Rock and Roll Part II" (The 'B' side
    was called "Rock and Roll Part I).

    Either part I or part II was I believe an instrumental track. I take it that
    the one you heard was instrumental.
    
    It was originally a single circa 1971/2 (was it _THAT_ long ago?) and
    has been released on various Glitter compilations over the years (in
    the UK at any rate). FWIW..Gary Glitter started out as Paul Gadd, then
    moved onto Paul Raven before adopting his Gary Glitter persona and has
    been in the music biz a long time. 
    
    He was very popular in the 70's in the UK (a teen Glam-rock idol)
    ...but to my knowledge never made it in the US. I think he is well into
    his forties now (maybe even fifties??) but I have seen him twice in
    concert and if nothing else, he is a brilliant showman who puts on a
    very enjoyable show. (He is still gigging at present!)
    
    I have a copy of his greatest hits on vinyl, and I'm pretty sure that
    the track is on it.
    
    I doubt very much if this would be available in the US, but I think I
    have the same LP on a cassette somewhere too; so, if you want it, drop
    me a mail.

Hey Paul,

Gary Glitter did have a 'Best Of' album released on CBS Records in about
1983-84. I have a copy of it.

Although I believe that album is out of print, I believe Rhino Records just
recently issued a Gary Glitter collection, including "Rock and Roll, Part II", 
I think within the past month (maybe even in the past week or two!). So
although the book might be out of date, check the "Misc. G" section anyways
in a good store (Lechmere maybe?), it might be there.

(Or call Noteworthy Music, they can tell you if they have it...)

    Dick Jacob's "Who Wrote That Song?" book lists the title as
    "Rock and Roll (Part II)" - it was written by Gary Glitter and
    Mike Leander in 1972.  
    
    Norm N. Nite's "Rock On Almanac" lists "Rock and Roll Part 2" -
    performed by Bary Glitter on the Bell label - as a Gold Hit in
    July of '72.
    
    (In July of '82 another song written by Leander and Glitter made
    the charts. It was "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" - performed by
    Joan Jett & The Blackhearts on the Boardwalk label.)

Does anyone remember who did a song called (I think) "A Fine Fine Day" back
somewhere in the early 80's ? I'm almost certain it was one of those one
hit wonders. The chorus goes something like "It's a fine fine day, for a
reunion". If I remember correctly, the storyline is about some guy (the singer)
who's uncle has been in prison and is getting out (thus the reunion). I also
think that it got a bit of MTV play...

I believe it was by Tony Carey. He was the keyboard player from some other
band (maybe Rainbow?). I don't think the title of the song was "Fine Fine
Day" however, I think it was "Last Day Of Summer", or something similar.....

    I have heard parts of a rap song called perhaps "O.P.P.", never the
    whole thing, and I can't really understand what they're saying.
    
    I have also seen people wearing hats that say "O.P.P." on them.

    I'm looking for a recording of a Lou Reed song that I saw on MTV
    a year or two ago: "Love You Susanne"(?) or something like that.
    I've never seen it on any of his albums.  This is one of my all-time
    favorite songs and I'd love to get a copy of it.  Does anyone out there
    have it, or know if it was released on an album or single?  I never
    heard the song on the radio and only saw the video about 3 times, but
    the song made a lasting impression on me.

    "I Love You Suzanne" is from Lou Reed's 1984 album "New Sensations",
    and was released (in the UK at least) as a single ... if I remember
    correctly, it was heavily rotated on MTV at the time.
    
    The album is currently available on 'nice price' CD, but if you prefer
    vinyl, I'd imagine that it'd be easily found in used stores.

"New Sensations" also has IMO a great song called "Turn to Me" ... Lou did
killer versions of both TtM and "Love You Suzanne" at a Amnesty Int'l concert
a few years back (as well as "Rock and Roll"), which was simulcast on 'BCN.

    Can anyone tell me who sings the song "We're only here for a little
    while"?  I think it's definitely a country song, but don't quote me on

    that's his name.  He has another song out too, "Cross my broken heart."

"Grazing in the Grass" is one song, done first an instrumental by South
African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, then done in by the undistinguished Friends 
of Distinction with words pasted on.

As Lenny said to Squiggy, "It lacked what every instrumental needs, words."

The thing about pasting words onto instrumentals is that you can't hear 
the instrumental anymore without hearing the words.  

"Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" went from bull to ox when it picked up words.

    "There's a Place in the World For A Gambler"  is from the Dan Fogelberg
    album "Souvenirs" (my fave by him) from 1974. CHeck this album out...it
    is produced by Joe Walsh, and has such guest artists as Walsh, don
    Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Gerry
    Beckley ??  Joe Lala....and more
    
    I think it's his best album, but certainly my favorite by him, you may
    recognize "Part of the Plan" off the same album.

    What's the story behind Brian Wilson's 1967 idea of an album called
    "Smile"? 
    
    The covers were supposedly printed up, and stocked in a warehouse, but
    the album as Brian envisioned it didn't materialize. Or did it? 
    
    What's known for sure is that in 1967 The Beach Boys released an album
    called "Smiley Smile," with well known creations such as the
    ground-breaking songs like "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes and Villains."
    
    Is there in existence a version of "Smile" as Brian intended it? 
     

    A pretty good version of the "Smile" story is in the booklet of the
    must-own double-CD-of-the-century "Smiley Smile / Wild Honey".
    As far as I know, there's not enough from the "Smile" sessions to make
    a coherent album, but there are some tantalizing fragments as bonus
    tracks on the CD.
    
    I've heard that "Heroes and Villains", the Beach Boys bio, has more
    info on Brian's crack-up at the time.

It is indeed called "Stealin'", and it seems to have been covered by
an awful lot of people!  I have it on an ancient Arlo Guthrie album
(Running Down The Road).  According to that album, it was written by
someone named Gus Cannon.

   In CD form, they're all over the place in (your finer) Boston/Cambridge
   area record stores.  Cheapo, Stereo Jack, Tower Records are 3 places I've
   been recently that had some.  For other formats (esp. LP) you may be out
   of luck for retail, but the used sections of stores like Cheapo, Jack's,
   Second Coming (all Cambridge MA) ought to have used LP versions (esp.

     "The Electric Slide".  The version I bought was  by Grandmaster Slice.
       
     When I played this version at a recent party, alot of people
     said that's not the version we know, that is the newer rap version... 
     This version appears to have too much drumming and hard for dancers 
     to hear the words...

    The correct spelling is Vince Guaraldi.  He also wrote the theme music
    to "Black Orpheus" ("Cast Your Fate to the Wind") which you would
    probably recognize in a moment.

    Anyway, as that has dissappeared, I suppose what it said is that 
    the writer's name was Vince Guaraldi and that the actual name of
    the tune itself is "Linus and Lucy" or "Lucy and Linus" (not sure
    which).
    
    If you like that style of music, I suggest you tune in Mr. Roger's
    Neighborhood and listen very closely to the keyboard work in the
    background.
    
    Mr. Roger's has a FANTASTIC piano stylist playing for him that I've
    always likened to Guaraldi's Peanuts work.  I sometimes tune in just
    to listen to the piano.

    "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" is not the theme music to Black Orpheus.

by Charles Tr�net.
As you noticed it, it's called 'La mer'.
It can be found on any Charles Tr�net compilation/greatest hits album.

It will give you the opportunity to discover many other great songs from him :

    The original is by the Everly Brothers. I have heard that one

    I found a "Rock" encylopedia and sure enough it was Brian Hyland who
    released this song in 1962 (it went to #3 on the charts).

    Unfortunately, the encyclopedia did not include Bobby Vinton (the
    Polish Prince - who was last seen blowing the national anthem at a

Help with a Birthday Present...

Hello all...wa-a-a-y back in 1980, when my daughter was 8 years old, I bought 
her a tape called "The Rock Album", compiled by K-tel International, Inc. This 
was her favorite tape and she knew all the songs on it and we used to play the 
tape a lot while traveling around in the car. Every time we hear a song from 
this tape, she always says "Do you remember...?" Well, at the end of January, 
she'll be 21 years old, and my "sentimental" gift to her, is a reproduction of 
this tape (we still have the tape case but the tape itself is long gone). Now 
I'm looking for the music so that I can make the tape. If you have any of the 
albums or tapes that have any of these songs and would care to loan them to me,

    I'm looking for the name of the band that recently had an "alternative"
    type song released, titled, I believe, "VALERIE LOVES ME". It's a
    really nice tune, for the most part, but the "chorus" is a right
    rave-up, wherein the vocalist screams, "Valerie loves me!", with tons
    of reverb added to the voice. Please help, since I can never remember

    I don't remember the title of the song but I do know it had to do
    something with either Tibet or Thailand or some far Eastern Land.
    
    For some reason I keep thinking of Murray Head did the male version of
    this song. I can vaguely recall two distinctly different videos for
    this 1983 song.
    
    If anyone can think of a song/video that smacks of this description

    It's called "It's Your Thing", the original was the Isley Bros.
    (probably the one you are thinking of).  There are a few covers,

    the Who, Dave Clark 5 and Manfred Mann, all to no avail.  It may be
    that the title does not reflect the song enough to make the

    Before I did the notes thing I went to a record store and looked
    through their BIG book of recordings for a clue.  You'd be amazed at
    how many *.Jack recordings there seem to be.  I do of course recognize
    that I could have missed it in fact that the book was wrong.

    now maybe I forgot those guys .... I'll check again!

    Well, there was a bunch a notes from me in here looking for the long
    version, too, but somebody on the internet got me the info.  The "Best
    Of" CD that's out (Noteworthy has it for sure) has the original long 
    version, as well as a couple other gems - "Bach Doors Man" and "Tongue 
    in Cheek".
    
    War's "Spill The Wine" is on their "Best Of," too, and I'm pretty sure
    its the long version.  
    
    It's tough with CD's - you're usually relegated to the Best of for some
    older groups and you always have to stop and ask "Is it the original?"

    Has anyone come across any CD's by a group called the Geinoh
    Yamashirogumi?  It's a Japanese choral group who has apparantly done
    some 10 or so projects over the years.  I have the Akira soundtrack CD
    (Akira, for those not in the know, is an animated movie from Japan, has
    based on the popular comic by the same name).  It's a very intriguing 
    soundtrack and I'd really like to get some of the other releases.  
    
    Having paid (eep) $30.00 for this CD, I suspect that other Geinoh
    Yamashirogumi CD's might also be expensive, sort of considered imports. 
    I know not.  
    
    (actually, I suspect the reason I paid $30.00 for this one was that I
    bought it at a speciality shop, and I wanted it bad enough I shelled

    is not the long version.  You can tell the difference because
    in the long version there are some lines which are omitted on
    the single; they go: "I know I'm laying in a field of grass somewhere..."

   I was just listening to the radio and heard a song that I haven't heard
in quite a while. It was done in the 70's? It has Piano in the background,
Hammond'ish organ, and a bass that is all over the place. The bass has a
main part as the melody - with the piano. There is also a backwards guitar
too.
   It's sung by a guy who is mostly singing in falsetto, except for a couple
of sections. All I can remember of the lyrics is during a small repeated part
near the end:  "Just like the one who loves you"...


   Any ideas?

    That's Avenging Annie by Andy Pratt.  I heard it on the radio about a
    month ago and I've been itching to find it ever since but I haven't 
    had any luck.  

    "Avenging Annie" is on Andy's self titled Columbia album (his only for
    that label).  It has been issued on CD, maybe even deleted already  8^) 
    8^)  The song is actually a clever rewrite of Woody Guthrie's "Pretty
    Boy Floyd".

    I've heard this song twice in the last week, I really like it, I
    proabably used to know who sang it, but now I have no clue.  I'm sure
    it's a male singer known for solo work (I think!), ie Bryan Adams,
    Corey Hart (but he was a one hit wonder, wasn't he?) etc.... I almost
    wanna say it's Rick Springfield or something like this, but I believe
    the song came out after his heyday, short as it was. I'm going to guess
    and say this came out mid to late 80's.
    
    It's a fairly melodic sort of song, no real heavy guitar, perhaps falls
    into the "ballad" class.
      
    It seems to be about a guy and a girl (what isn't?) who are stuck in
    some working-class Nebraska town and dream of getting out.  Sounds like
    a Stringsteen song, but he's not the singer, I'm sure.  
    
    Somewhere in it, the subject of the song has cops come to the door 
    and everyone's accusing him of killing the girl (who didn't come home 
    last night, according to the lyrics).
    
    Anyway, I remember a couple lines from the song (the chorus, methinks):
    
    "I swear I left her by the river"
    "I swear I left her safe and sound"
    (some line I do not remember)
    "...dream of leaving this Nebraska town..."
    
    Of course, each time I heard it, the radio/supermarket-radio didn't say

   I heard on the radio that Andy Pratt used to live in the Arlington area...

    First time noter in this file looking for info/sources on two songs. 
    One is a very short piano version of THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER that I
    heard a number of times in the past year or so played on some of the
    soft rock/oldies stations in the Boston area.  The second is a male
    singer w/piano singing a lullaby to his daughter, I believe.  It sounds
    a little like a Billy Joel-type song.  The singer mentions going to
    sleep and leaving questions for another time, years later when they are
    gone, love will remain, etc.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

	The second one *could* be "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)" by

    Anybody familiar with The MellowFellows. I've heard a couple tracks on
    WRNX out of Amherst, MA. They do (did?) hard driving R&B, al la Otis
    Redding. I'd really like to pick up this album if it's still available.
    The radio station told me the album they have, "Street Party", was
    released in 1988 and that they haven't seen anything more recent.

    If anyone has any info on this band, their releases, I'd be much
    obliged.

    favorites".
    
    Oddly enough, although the guy doesn't seem to be known for much else
    in the states, Rockit Records in Nashua is selling a book of guitar
    tablature of his greatest hits (including that one).

    I love the song myself.  It came out during my college years and I
    always cranked it when it came on the radio.  Wasn't that guy in Max

    Found the Mellow Fellow's Street Party album tonight at Strawberries.
    Haven't gotten to the end yet but it's clear why I found it in the Blues
    section. So far the real mover and shaker is the track that I heard on
    the radio. Not that the other's are bad, they're not. I just wouldn't
    run out and by it for them. They do a nice job on John Hiatt's "Feels
    Like Rain" and the old Butterfield fave "Drivin' Wheel". And yes,
    there's a picture of and dedication to Big Twist.

    the Drifters did the original version; there must be a greatest
    hits album. Also, since it's one of the defining songs of that
    era, it must be on a zillion 50's (or is it early 60's) compilations.

  If you need only a little Drifters, get the Rhino compilation (of Atlantic
  material), "Very Best of the Drifters".
  
  This is middle-period Drifters (Under the Boardwalk, Save the Last Dance
  for Me, Ben E. King stuff).
  
  The great earlier stuff, including Clyde McPhatter gems (Lover's Question
  & the like), is available in a 2-disc (50 song?) Rhino compil.    - Jay

    Well, according to my good book its based upon Bach's Suite No 3 in D
    Major (Air on a G String). Now I've always had a problem with this
    because I find it hard to see much similarity between the two. Mind
    you, maybe I only know the 'classic' bit out of Air on a G String.
    
    I remember being at boarding school when this came out. Our amazingly
    stuffy organist launched into, what we thought was Whiter Shade of
    Pale, as we filed out of church one sunny, Sunday morning. We were amazed. 
    I remember him saying it was a Bach piece.

Months ago, I saw on WGBH TV out of Boston a live outdoor concert somewhere in
the states I think.  I think Paul Simon, with Ladysmith Black Mombazo, may have
been on stage in that same show or in another one shown around the same time.

I'm interested in another performer: a smallish woman with short hair, all by
herself on stage, playing a guitar and singing a song called, I think, "At
Seventeen" (I think it was about when she was a teenager with acne).  I loved
the music, there were lots of wonderful guitar chords and stuff, and want to
know: who she is and what is the name of the song?  

My end goal is to get a recording of it and also the lyrics & music.  Thanks for
any help!

    those immortal lyrix are from the toon "Joy to The World" by the
    immortal Three Dog Night... hmm, one of my earliest albums was
    "Three Dog Night - Naturally"  and as I recall it was on that album,
    but you could find it on their greatest hits

The song is "Joy to the World", the bullfrog is named Jeremiah, the song
was written by Hoyt Axton, and the popular version was performed by
Thre Dog Night.

    The song is by Donovan. As far as I remember, it was originally 
    released as a single. You'll probably find it on some "Best of" or
    "Greatest Hits" compilation.

Going through some old tapes the other day and found a tape of a 
group called Box of Frogs, CBS/Epic 1985. 

I seem to recall that this was a reunion album of a 60's group. 
The Yardbirds? I'm not sure. Had one single off the album that 
was a marginal hit called Back Where We Started.

Anyone know if there is a CD version available?

Is there a CBS/EPIC WWW page?

    Box of Frogs was a sort of supergroup that included one or two members of
    the Yardbirds (Chris Dreja certainly played rhythm guitar and I think
    Jim McCarty was on drums). Mark Feltham (ex-Nine Below Zero) played
    harp.
    
    Not sure about a CD version, but I think I recall seeing one.

Yea,  drawing blanks....

They did an lp called "Stranger in a Strange Land" or was it just "Strange
Land".  I have 2 of their lps....

Also didn't (whew!) ex-Family Roger Chapman sing on some of the tracks 
(maybe all of them??) ... always loved his voice.

    I was surfing the other night, and came upon a (not new) piece of
    footage of a concert. I had no idea who the guys were that were
    playing, but they were awesome. At the end, they said the three were Al
    DiMeola, Stanley Clarke and Jean-Luc Ponte. I think this might have
    been at Monterey (Monterey Pop Festival? Does that ring a bell?).
    
    I want a recording of this concert! Preferably a CD. Anybody have any
    idea what I should be asking for? A casual stroll through Lechmere's
    music department netted no joy.

    DiMeola/Clarke/Ponty have a recent recording out, "The Rites of Strings".
    I think this is all studio stuff, but if you liked the live footage

    btw, I highly recommend her new disc; outstanding from start to finish.
    I thought "One of Us" was kinda gimmicky at first, but I have to admit
    it's grown on me.  Nevertheless, it doesn't come close to representing
    what she can do.  Her singing is much stronger on many of the other
    cuts and the material likewise shows greater depth than you might
    think from her "hit".  Mark Egan, original Pat Metheny Group bassist,
    contributes tasty basswork throughout.  I think she's one of the big
    Grammy nominees this year and may clean up; in this case it would be
    well deserved.

  I was going to wait for a '95 Grammies topic to materialize, but:

  I skimmed a listing of '95 nominations for "major categories" and was
  shocked...
  
  For the first time in my memory (maybe ever?), the list of Grammy nominees
  didn't make me feel physically ill.
  
  Apparently there's a new selection process in place, with checks/balances
  to avoid embarrassments of years past.
  
  It must be working, because some, maybe even many, of the selections seem
  to hold water.  What used to be nauseating "industry awards" now seem to
  be acknowledge actual musical worth.  I never thought I'd see the day.

  I looked at general, rock, r&b, blues, country, jazz, classical, ...  All
  seemed remotely credible within their genre.
  
  Given their past history, I expect there'll be a backlash among powerful
  industry shills, leading to elimination of the new selection process by
  next year...  But for now (or until I take a second look and change my

    Over 15 years ago my dad had a favorate single "The Last Rose of Summer" 
    played by the Boston Pop Orch.  The single is now too old and the sound
    tracks are so bad that it is very annoying to listen to.  He has been 
    trying to find a re-mastered cassette or CD for quite some time.  I have 
    been to many record shops in States but could not find any cd or cassettes 
    by the group that carry this title.
    
    Any body out there knows that Boston Pop has released re-mastered music
    of that title please?  I am in desparate need for it as I am trying to
    fulfill one of his wishes.

    which was also an the same album as Old Timers Night at the Boston
    	Pops. Try looking for it under that titile.
