| How about using a video camera or instant picture camera to take
pictures of the kids doing some activities they like to do. That will
give your child something to look at even when you are far away. Also
consider leaving behind some envelopes (and postage) with your new
adress so that they kids can send drawings, etc to you (you should also
send some stuff back (make it like a pen pal exercise).

| Could you buy or draw-&-xc world maps with outlines of continents (and
maybe major countries) but no names? Have the kids color one, and use
another for stickers (a koala you-know-where, a Canada goose, a panda
in China... how about a snake in a circle with a line through it for
Ireland?!). They could put a dot where they live and a dot where
you'll be living, then compare distances to meaningful locations
(Disney World, the North Pole!).

I'll only add that rituals can be a real help in making transitions.
This need not be elaborate...just special. Instead of handing out
envelopes, have your son exchange with each child personally...maybe
they stand in a circle and he goes round saying goodbye and exchanging
envelopes. Another idea is fears and good wishes...have them draw a
picture depicting what they are afraid of (saying goodbye) and what
they hope for (keeping in touch, visiting when they are grown up)...
we've had kids burn the fears in a BBQ pit and take the wishes home..in
this case maybe give the wishes to your son in exchange for an
envelope.

| Before you invest a lot of time and effort in a video, be aware that TV
standards are different and, unless you own a multi standard TV and
recorder, you may not be able to read that video at the other end.
Of course, you could always take your US equipment with you to use only
for videos :-)

| Another idea I just had is to get a cheap polaroid instant camera.
Make pictures "on the spot" of each child and let them build their
picture into a story about themselves which you then collate in a loose
leaf scrap book. Pages could be added as the years go by and your son
corresponds with the ones that he maintains contacts with.
It would also be a good way for him to introduce himself to his new
school.

| How about some inexpensive t-shirts, and some tubes/sm bottles of
fabric paint. Let each child decorate their t-shirt, or each child
could make a picture/design on each of the t-shirts so that they
all have something to remember each other by. Each child could 'sign'
your son's shirt _ with help from the adults as needed.
My son decorated a sweat shirt for school and loved doing it and
wearing it...
