| | All anyone could possibly do in this situation now is pray. This hurts
deeply for those of us who have suffered an in-utero or near delivery
loss. I will keep your friend in my thoughts.

At 32 weeks the baby is clinically viable, is your friend in a hospital
that has an NICU, and can properly deal with high risk deliveries?
There are so many new technologies in birth defects, this has to be one
of the worst roller coaster rides anyone could possibly experience.
What you have to do is keep strong, your friend will be needing your
strength and courage over the next weeks and months.

As for the doctor, well some people just don't engage their brain,
before opening their mouths! I've had several experiences like that
with hospital staff. Thank heavens the majority of them are truly
    caring people.

| 1243.2 | what can I say | KAOFS::M_FETT | alias Mrs.Barney | Tue Dec 10 1991 09:49 | 32 |
| | Cindy,
Firstly, please do not feel guilty for having a pregnancy go well when
a friends' is not. When I was pregnant last year, our two closest
couple/friends were one and two months behind me. I do not begrudge the
health and happiness of those two little children, just because our
Daniel did not live. Sometimes I am sad that we couldn't all have had
our children together, but I am not resentful.
I think your friend's situation comes down to choices. She will have
to choose her grief as it were. She can choose to terminate now
(I can very well imagine what sort of choice that is -- it would be
incredibly difficult to make). She can choose to wait with the small
chance that nature will beat the odds and her child will survive, but
she has to live the next 8 weeks with the knowledge that chances are
    not good.
The week I waited to deliver after having found out Daniel had died was
not as horrid as everyone believes; but your friend will still feel
the baby which will definitely make it harder.
Not being a medical professional, I can only ask: if the fluid is
drained do chances for the baby increase?
The day we found out our terrible news, the doctor was right there and
I asked her about the feasibility of viable tissue for transplant. In
my case, she said it would not be possible, as the fetus will have died
    before delivery.
I know this may sound a little hard to hear or a little difficult to
even suggest to the mother at this point, but if the child survives
delivery and then passes away, she might consider this as a way of
    having her child live on.

These are incredibly difficult choices, and I can only say that my
    thoughts are with your friend.

And I will say a little prayer for your friend as well. The torment
(and that word just does not seem strong enough) that your friend is
going through must be sheer hell.

Four days before Spencer was born I had an Ultrasound test that
indicated low/no lung activity, little/no movement, little amniotic
fluid and a head size that measured off the charts. No one could tell
us what this all meant except that we had to go in to the hospital on
the following Monday to be induced. We were preparing ourselves for the
possibility of a baby that would need some help.

Thankfully, Spencer was born with no problems at all.

Sometimes tests do not tell the entire story. If the baby is still
moving inside of her, it has a chance (even if the chance is slim). I
wish only the best for you and your friend.

Did your friend get a second opinion from a doctor who's expert in
neonatal or in-utero treatment of babies?

Medicine is making such great strides in this area that even if
her doctor is very good and very up to date, there could easily be
a new technique or medication taht will help her baby.

| | Hello,

Thank you for your caring notes. Monica I am sorry about little
Daniel. That must have been a terrible ordeal to go through. I
appreciate the words of encouragement regarding friends who are
    pregnant together, that helps alot.

Wendy, thank God, Spencer is OK. That note had me jumping for joy. My
friend has had several doctors (10 to be exact) examine her and the
baby. They have only seen two cases like this before and they both did
not survive. They did a amnio test and the number of fully developed
lungs is 60 and little Victoria (she named her that for Victory) was
    only 11.

Thank you for the notes and prayers. Hopefully everything will turn
out fine. Again, if you hear of any other situations similiar to this
    please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Cindy

| 1243.6 | NICU's can do wondrous things | MEMIT::GIUNTA |  | Tue Dec 10 1991 10:21 | 19 |
| | I second the opinion about making sure the hospital has a good NICU.
There might still be a chance that the child could survive, and even if
it's a small chance, I think that having the best medical care
available would be essential. Are there any things that can be done to
help the odds of the baby surviving? I got steroid injections
specifically to help the lung development of my 28-week twins since my
water had broken and delivery was imminent. I lasted 2 days before
delivering, but that was enough for the steroids to help significantly.
And there are lung surfactants and other drugs that can be used to
assist lung development. There have been incredible strides in
neonatal medicine in recent years, and things that were impossible once
    are now done routinely.

I wish your friend the best in a most difficult situation. My thoughts
    and prayers are with her.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Is there any way (or was it suggested)
that they bring your friend to Mass. General Hospital, where they may
be able to do more for her? Usually, when people are really hurt, they
get transferred to Mass. General which is the best hospital for

I hope everything turns out o.k.. What a terrible ordeal to go

| | This isn't much help, but I recently read in the doctor's office about
a doctor who was doing surgery in utero on children. Is Victoria a
candidate for this? Suctioning the fluid off? I wish I could remember
where this doctor was. I think Texas. You may want to ask. He was
into cutting the uterus, taking the baby out, still attached
umbilically, repairing whatever, and putting everything back together.
He'd done extensive practice on animals and had good luck on human
    babies.

| |
I wrote in a note a while back about a similar situation. Someone I
know found out 4 months into her pregnancy that the baby was going to
be born with it's skull not fully formed. She was told by the dr that
if the baby does survive the delivery it would not live but a few
hours. Sorry to say that the baby survived 24 hrs. and passed on.

This woman got several opinions and ultrasounds which all told her the
same thing. After suffering through this emotional and physical trauma
she ended up delivering the baby natural to be so overwhelmingly
dissapointed. There was nothing that could have been done to save this
child, he would have been brain damaged if he lived, which anyone would
have handled if he just gotten the chance.

Please don't feel guilty about having a good pregnancy compared to your
friend, it's not your fault, or hers, it's no ones fault. It's nature.
Just offer true blue support and compassion, I found that the woman
above welcomed the support more than anything you could possibly do for
    her.

Yes, that was the kind of specialist I was talking about, not just
    an ordinary NICU.

They do that kind of surgery at the teaching hospital at the
University of Texas medical school, and I think perhaps at Buffalo
and at the University of Washington.

Memorial's a good hospital, but if the baby has a condition that
they've only seen two of, it's a highly specialized problem and
she might need a highly specialized location for it.

I know a great deal of recent research has involved lung
development in babies, so there might be something experimental
that would help. I think I have the article around still, if you
think your friend would like to have the name of the hospital and
    the doctor.

| | When I was pregnant (the first time), I had 6 doctors tell me that my
babies heart rate was too fast to be delivered naturally. And even
after doing a C-section, the baby probably wouldn't live due to heart
defects. Sure enough, after she was born, the doctors found 3 heart
defects and they told me that she had a 10% chance of making it through
    the night.

Three days later, she was transported to New England Medical Center
    Neo-Natal Intensive Care in Boston.

Today, Alyssa is a healthy, happy go lucky 4 year old. The problem
with doctors is when they give an estimated chance of survival, that's
exactly what it is - estimated. Babies and children are a hell of a
lot stronger than we give them credit for. Alyssa's heart valve
pressure was 160, which is enough to kill a human being. A normal
heart pressure is 0. My daughter beat the odds, and now has a heart
pressure of 15, after heart surgery.

I've heard of so many babies born with numerous problems and with
medication and maybe operations, everything is fine now.

Your friend should not give up hope. Tell her that we're all praying
for her and we hope everything works out fine. And you shouldn't feel
guilty. What you think she feels and what she really does feel is two
totally different stories. She is not going to hate you because you're
    having a baby.

If you need a referral of doctors that specialize in this area, give me
a call. After having Alyssa, I know of quite a few that are EXCELLENT!

| | First, I want you to know that is it not you who should feel guilty of
anything. It was actually kind of odd after we had our still birth, I
had more concerns for my two sisters inlaw, they were both exactly 6
weeks behind me in due date. I didn't want to upset either of them,
nor make them feel that this might happen to them. My sister in law
here locally naturally came to the graveside services. My sister inlaw
in Florida, I requested she not be told until after she had given
birth, which is the way it happened fortunately.

Your friend is probably in one of the best pre and post delivery
situations in MA, just shy maybe of someplace like Boston Childrens.
I know from experience they will do everything humanly possible to save
both mother and baby. I just keep asking why don't they attempt
delivery now? If the baby's lungs are mature. But that's probably
only one of a hundred what ifs and why nots.

I will say a prayer for her and the baby!

I would have been all over that (so-called) Dr's case and then I would

    the incident.

Tell your friend that she has some long distance friends caring and
praying for her and her baby, Victoria. Tell her not to give up hope,
things happen which often cannot be explained, and I've even heard
doctors blame it on a miracle once or twice. I would find out all of
the specific details and start calling different states best neonatal
hospitals and describe what is going on and see if there is a doctor

libraries and read medical journals even).

| | I've been reading this note and feeling a lot of empathy for you,
your friend and Victoria and just wanted to alay any concerns you might
be feeling about Memorial Hospital's NICU. Nine years ago I had
an emergency CC there on a Sunday afternoon when my regular OB/GYN was
not on call. From the moment I entered the ER hemorrahaging, til the
time we left 7 days later, my daughter and I received the best care
imaginable--i.e.--they saved both our lives--and a baby born with
no dicernable heartbeat or respiration was given CPR---and after that
with an Apgar of 0, which later went up the scale to about 7. Still
not great. She was in intensive care with tubes all over her, and in
her stomach--she could not cry at all because of all the apparatus.

When she was finally given to me to hold, she was tiny, jaundiced, and
looked exhausted, but she was alive. It really was a miracle--and it
was assisted 150% by the staff at Memorial and their expertise. Don't
let one doctor's "attitude" sour you on the entire NICU---I may be
extremely prejudiced in their favor, but IMHO they know what they're
doing and they treat each case as if it's their only one.

P.S. that very fragile baby is now a very healthy, happy and fully
alert, intelligent 9 year old. (Don't take Apgar's TOO seriously)

witnessed some of the miracles they can perform. Our real Estate agent
had her child at 22 week (that's what about 4 months of pregnancy!) and
her baby survived with no major defects thanks to Memorial. The
Worcester paper did an article on the baby several years ago.

Just a piece of info, Memorial NICU, and most of the Worcester
hospitals are supported in a great way by the expert staff at UMass Medical
both the regular specialists and their students. That pseudo-doctor who
was so insensitive was probalby a doctor in training from UMMC. That is not
putting down UMMC, they can perform their own brand of miracles!

| | Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all of your responses. My friend has been sent home and
is just waiting. She has erratic contractions and the Dr. told her not
to come back until they were steady and the pain intensifies. The
reason they do not want to induce labor is because they want the baby's
lungs to develop fully as possible. Hopefully she can hang on until 34
weeks at which time the lungs are as developed as they can be. (That is
    2 weeks away).

I am so happy and relieved to hear the positive encounters with
Memorial Neo-Natal ICU. Thank goodness she will be in good hands. I
am going to print out some of your responses and bring them to my
friend and I'm sure she will be greatly encouraged and have a renewed
    sense of hope.

    Thanks,

| | WHAT A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!

If you don't believe in miracles you just might after I tell you what
    happened Christmas morning.

Jennie, my friend, went into labor Christmas Eve night. Everybody was
expecting the worst, she told the doctors and nurses that as soon as
the baby was delivered to take it out of the room, she didn't want to
see it. As soon as it was born they heard crying from the baby and
everyone, including the doctors were in shock. My cousin (the father)
was crying outloud in the delivery room and the doctors announced that
    they had a Christmas miracle.

The baby was born 7 lb 12 oz but that was all fluid. A couple days
later she was down to 5 lb 6 oz. All the fluid was being absorbed by
her body. All the tests they ran for disease that would cause the
fluid in the chest were negative.

Jennie was released Friday after CHristmas and they ran out to buy a
crib, and all the baby furniture, clothes, carseat etc.
I cannot believe the baby is ok and we are so Thankful. Victoria Ann
came home yesterday at 9:30 and I saw her last night and she is
    beautiful.

Jennie and I thank you all for your support and words of encouragement
through this tough time in our lives.

Have a happy and healthy 1992.

| | Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful news with us! I kept hoping
and praying, and checking this note every day to see if there was an update...
almost afraid of what what I'd find.
God bless Victoria Ann, AND her parents, who refused to throw in the towel and
take the easy way out.

| | That is great news. I too had been looking for a reply and praying
constantly for the family and Victoria. What a great name she chose.
Why doesn't the base noter make a small book for Victoria when she gets
older to see what a miracle she truly is.

What a great present and a great way to start off the new year.

I am so happy that it was great news!!!!

So glad the boss has stepped out for lunch, so he won't see me
blubbering! I may have to convince these people the tissue is for the
    runny nose of my cold!

This really brings belief that prayer can bring miracles!!

Give that miracle baby a huge hug from me!

again and as one person suggested, I am going to make a book for little

| | I am sitting here in my office with tears streaming down my face. I was almost
afraid to check this note again. How happy the parents must be to have the
opportunity to hold their child. It does anger me that some Dr's recomend
termination of a pregancy when there is a chance they could be wrong.
I commend your "cousin and cousin in law" for their values.
Regards,
Sue (mostly read only)

| | I am another expectant mother (1st child due on 4/15) who has only
been a notes reader but never a writer until now.

I read about Victoria and her problem yesterday and went home to tell
my husband about her and her problem. We both prayed for her last
night and then this morning I got to the note that told of her
    miraculous recovery.

I too had tears in my eyes and my first thought was that I hope the
uncaring doctor who gave such bad advice to your friend was as touched
by the outcome as we all were.

I agree with one of the other repliers who said that God must have big
plans in store for that wonderful little baby! Please wish them all
the best from all of us who as parents, and expectant parents, felt for
them and the pain they must have been going through.
