    I experiences very similar bleeding starting 2 days after I found out I
    was pregnant. I was in the doctor's office for my first meeting witht
    he nurse to talk about pregnancy, visits, nutrition, etc when I bled
    very heavily (yep, clots) - I thought I had had a miscarriage but when
    I was checked internally (luckily I was at the Dr's office) he said tht
    I was NOT having a miscarriage. It drove us nuts - but I have a 17
    month old to show and tell. 
    
    I will send you mail tomorrow with more details ... I guess it is too

    I went through the same things you mentioned in your note, and
    unfortuneatly I did lose the baby.  I started spotting and the doctor
    did an ultrasound.  There was still a live fetus and I was told to
    go home and rest for about a week.  After about 3 days the bleeding
    increased and again I was examined, the cervix was closed and the
    ultrasound showed that I was still pregnant, I went back to bed.
    Four days later I started cramping and had clotting.  I knew at this
    point that I had lost the baby.  The next day it was confirmed and I
    had a D&C.  I was 7 weeks when I started bleeding and my doctor said
    this was a very common time for miscarriage.  
    
    I hope this is not the case with your wife.  Good luck, my thoughts

My sister had a similar experience at around the same time in her pregnancy.
I don't know how much she bled, though.  It might have just been spotting.
They did an ultrasound and everything was OK.  It continued for a couple of
weeks, then stopped.  She is due in 10 days!

    I had bleeding and severe cramping when I was pregnant with Kat --
    first at about 3 weeks, then again at about 7 weeks, when my
    period would have been due.  That was before ultrasound, if you
    can imagine such a thing, so there wasn't much they could tell. 
    Kat's now almost 17 and has always been perfectly healthy and
    normal, so it didn't mean anything in my case.

    I went through the same thing for the first 4 months at the time when I
    would have normally been menstruating.  (One of the reasone I didn't
    realize I was pregnant until 5 1/2 months.)  My daughter, Emily is now 6.

    My cousin also had spotting to heavier bleeding in three different
    pregnancies very similar to your description.  The first time, she
    delivered a healthy boy. The second time, she miscarried at about 9
    weeks along.  Her third pregancy she had no bleeding whatever.  She
    is curently in her fourth pregnancy at about 15 weeks along and had
    had the same type of bleeding as before, but the latest ultrasound shows
    the baby is ok.  
    
    My cousin mentioned that she did not notice any difference in the
    bleeding pattern between the three episodes that would indicate
    the miscarriage or full term baby.  She fluctuated between spotting
    and heavier bleeding almost continuously until after the first trimester.

    In our case the bleeding turned out be a miscarriage in process.  The
    results of the ultrasound on Wednesday showed no trace of a pregnacy at
    all.  The ironic part was that the bleeding had stopped, and we assumed
    were out of the woods, but in fact the miscarriage had completed.
    
    Now that we already have Chelsea, this miscarriage was easier to bear
    then our first one.

    First and seemingly important to the basenoter, How is your wife doing?
    
    In my first pregnancy I too bled, it was due to a drop in hormones,
    which was corrected with progesterone suppositories twice a day and a
    shot of another similar hormone. The pregnancy went well, unfortunately
    we were on vacation about an hour or so north of Hershey PA in a rural
    area when the bleeding started.  The hospital there was in direct
    contact with my OB who gave orders via the phone.
    
    I had no bleeding with my son and have since had one miscarriage due to
    the same hormone deficiency. (It was an unplanned pregnancy and for me
    I need to take progesterone suppositories from day 18 of my cycle to
    keep my level normal)  The second time wasn't really a miscarriage but
    almost what was described in the base note, I had a sac which never
    developed, called a "blighted Ovum", a fertilized egg which never grew.
    Finally at 12 weeks I had a D&C, since there was no life.  The OB said
    this is a common condition for moms over 35 (that' me).  We haven't
    tried since that time.
    
    Hang in there, don't give up hope!

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but I have been out of office.

Paula and I are both doing pretty well.  As I stated in the basenote, the fact
that we already have Chelsea has made this miscarriage so much easier to take 
than the first one.  She makes all of the difference in the world.  Since, this
pregnancy was so close to the last one, we have decided to delay our desire for 
the next one so Paula's systems can get back to normal, and she can feel normal
again.

    My spouse Cindy is now in her fourteenth week of pregnancy, and she has
    bled throughout at 5, 7, and 11 weeks, and intermittently since.  The
    doctor and nurse have both tried to say it is hemmorhoids because it
    happens when she goes to the bathroom, but she says the bleeding is 
    definately vaginal.  The nurse said she has a red spot on the cervix 
    which could be causing it.  Anyway, the bleeding made us nervous because 
    she miscarried a pregnancy at five weeks in August.  Now we feel out of 
    the woods, having seen a well-formed fetus with a beating heart last
    Thursday.

    re: my last.  The doctor was following the beta sub, which was
    consistently at the high end of the scale from what they expected, and
    they did ultrasounds after the first 2 bleeding episodes, so we knew
    everything was probably alright, but it was still nerve-wracking.

    Hi Linda,
    
    I had a major bleeding episode at 8 weeks.  My doctor took me off work
    for 4 weeks, complete bedrest.  I then spotted constantly thru weeks
    9 -> 11.  It was the worst month of my life.  No matter how hard I
    tried not to think about the possibility of miscarriage those thoughts
    always found a place in my brain.  The doctor felt I was just over
    doing it and also since this pregnancy was conceived thru IVF, it was
    considered high risk for the first trimester.
    
    Even now at 30 weeks, I still seem to be constantly on the lookout for
    red when I enter the bathroom.  Keep good thoughts and trust that
    everything is going to work out just fine!

    Lori,
      They treated Cindy as high-risk at the beginning too because of
    infertility and previous miscarriage, but then said after the first
    n weeks she would be considered a regular patient.  It's good to hear
    that things are going well after the early scares!  A book I have says
    that 50% of threatened miscarriages in the first trimester never
    happen, ie. the pregnancy is fine.
