    Maybe you should try looking into a hairdressing supply store.  I know
    here in Massachusetts we have a few of them.

    There was a book out about 15 years ago called "How to cut your own or
    anybody else's hair" or something like that, and then a sequel called
    "How to Cut Children's Hair" or something like that.  I took the latter
    out from the library and got my basic technique from that.  The copy I
    had was so old it should be called "How to Cut Children's Hair So They
    Look Like They Are Leftover From the Seventies", but the general ideas
    were fine!
    
    There may be updated versions of these in bookstores. 
    
    I wish the beauty schools had weekend workshops for amateurs - like one
    haircut on one Saturday morning.  But that isn't the market they're in!
    
    How do you keep kids still?  I use videotapes/cartoons and gummi bears. 
    

    Some beauty schools do have weekend workshops for amateurs.  Not a
    lot of them, not often, but if you keep your eyes open you might
    find one.
    
    Generally barbers are more cooperative about sharing their skills
    than hairdressers are.  The hairdressing market is oversaturated
    in most areas, while barbers view themselves as a dying breed.  So
    you might have better luck with someone who bills him/herself as a
    barber.

    I've tried beauty supply stores, is there a specialty 
    store just for hairdressers? Wouldn't I need a licence

    How do I keep the kids still?  I've been cutting their hair
    for so long (since birth) that they just know that everyone
    is better off being still. I have tried cutting hair in the 
    shower, bath, on the floor and in a chair. I like the floor 
    the best. The 'cutee' sits on a large towel and I spray the
    hair with water. I make sure my scissors are good and sharp
    and I start with the bangs.  They are usually the most crit-
    ical as far as appearances go, so I get them out of the way
    early on.

    and asked for a brochure.  I'm a little confused though, is

    No, you don't need a license to shop in a beauty supply shop.  They 
    do supply hair salons as well as regular customers (my mom).  She shops
    there maybe once a month.  "No license required" (ha)!  Check your
    yellow pages under "beauty" and it should direct you to "supply
    shops"!!

    I cut my family's hair too and I keep the kids still by having them
    brush their teeth while I'm doing it.  I have to work kind of fast
    but they love brushing their teeth and I achieve two things at once,
    neat hair and sparkling teeth.

    p.s.  I keep my husband still by turning on Star Trek and doing his
    bangs in a hurry too!  Sigh.
    

    I've done all my boys 'cuts from the start (except for about two
    supplied by a cousin), with fairly respectable results.  Their hair and
    taste are pretty simple, though, so I'm not sure how I'd do with other
    kids.  They're quiet enough that I never thought of watching Sesame
    Street or the like; anyway, if the weather's nice, we do it outside.

    Well, for those of us not courageous enough to do kids hair, where is a
    good place in So. NH to get a toddler's hair cut?

    Kim's Kut & Kurl in Merrimack, DW Highway behind Bank of NH
    424-5226.  Tracy was doing my kids hair, however she left this past
    week.
    
    Both places are very reasonable for kid's cuts/washes.  I've taken
    Craig and Lauren to both places and have been very satisfied.
    
    Also, on 101A (Pennichuck Square area) there are a few, but I didn't
    like the charges, haircuts were good but I think $12.00 for a trim on
    a 6-year old is too high.

    I take my boys to Fantastic Sam's in the Rich's plaza on 101a.  Only $6
    for a haircut.

    Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm going to try Fantastic Sam's.  It
    cheap ($6 for kids under 11) and convenient (right on 101A, open 
    until 9 every day, no appt. needed).  They do a "spray cut".  What's a
    spray cut I asked.  They don't wash the kids hair or blow-dry it.
    (I guess they use a plant sprayer).  Can you imagine my 21-month-old
    getting his hair blow-dryed??  Hahahahaha!
    
    I'll let you know how it comes out!

    Marc had his hair cut last nite at Fantastic Sam's, and it looks great! 
    He looked so cute sitting there in the chair - the smock they put on
    him covered his whole body except for his little sneakers peeking out! 
    I wish I'd brought my camera!
