| | For a short ride, you can try Mine Falls Park in Nashua.

It's behind the high school off exit 5 -- park in the lot around
behind the school, next to the track and the maintenance shed.
You usually need to walk the bike through the gates, which are
narrow, but once you're inside, you can wind around and through
several miles of dirt trails. One of them runs along the river
almost to downtown and back, and the others circle the island.

We also go on a lot of the back roads in the Merrimack-Amherst-
Milford area. And you can take Wire Road in Merrimack clear up
into Bedford and Goffstown -- it changes names a few times, I
think, but goes pretty much straight into town.

Send me mail if you want more specifics about roads in the Nashua
    area . . .

| | The Cape Cod rail trail. It used to be railroad tracks, but they have
paved them over. Very flat and about 25 miles in one direction.

I second the Cape Cod Rail Trail. We took the family on a great bike
ride/picnic there a couple of weeks ago while camping at Nickerson
State Park in Brewster. We rode for about 8 miles one way and it was
all pretty level ground and except for having to cross a couple of
streets to continue on the trail there is really no automobile danger.
They do not allow any motors of any kind on this trail which is great
when you have children to worry about!

How young do people put their kids in a bike seat? We have a
6month old that has been biking behind dad in a back pack but
we'd really like to put her in a bike seat.

The doctor said ok but make sure it has a shoulder harness and lots
    of cushioning.

Just wondering if other people have biked with their 6 month old.

| | We started biking with Nicole when she was about 6 months. She
absolutely loved it. The only problem we had is that after 30
minutes or so she would fall asleep and her head would fall forward.
It looked mighty uncomfortable but didn't seem to bother her at all.

The only recommendation I have is to make sure you get a good helmet
that fits properly. It took us several fittings and styles to find
    one the fit correctly.

    re: .6 (Hi Barb!)

We have friends whose son always falls asleep on the back of the
bike. They've solved the head bobbing problem by using a "bungie"
cord to attach the helmet to the bike seat. Don't know how safe
    it is though...

Well, we went biking with Allison (6 months). She had a Bell Helmet
and a Fisher Price bike seat. She loved it. She sang for a little
bit and then fell asleep. Her head tilted forward and the helmet
rested on the breast plate that holds the baby onto the bike seat.

We biked 20 miles in Vermont and also went camping. Nothing like a
little fresh air to make a baby sleep through the night.

She looked like a little baby daredevil with the helmet. I'm glad
we went. It was easier than we expected.

PS: thanks bonnie. I'm glad I had found out at least one other person
and biked with a 6 month old.
