| 1274.1 | You must clamp soon after birth | CADSYS::LEVITIN | Sam Levitin | Fri Apr 18 1997 14:16 | 13 |
| | We were considering participating in this program.
	We asked if they were still interested in the cord if
	it were not clamped until after it has stopped pulsing.
	I believe one of their requirements is that the
	cord be clamped either soon or immediately. This was
	a deal breaker for us.

	They naturally want the mother tested for various
	conditions during pregnancy. It's not the kind of
	program where you say, "Hi, I'm 8.5 months pregnant.
	Do you want the cord blood from my delivery?"

| 1274.2 | cord donor-multiple birth pregnancies | CSLALL::CABRAL |  | Fri Apr 18 1997 19:21 | 13 |
| | I called the referrenced number toady and they are sending me some
    material to read. I had to ask them to hold because my twins were
    chasing each other. When I could return to the call, the first
    question from the woman from the donor center was if I was pregnant
    with twins again. I told her I won't know until my untrasound at the
    end of this month. She told me to call her then as the currently do
    not accept donors from multiple birth cords. Just in case anyone else
    in this situation is thinking of donating. She was not able to give me
    a reason for this but hoped in the future that multiple births could be
    included in the program.

| | May be because twins sometimes (often?) cross transfuse during births.

| 1274.4 | I just rec'd info on it | TEAMLK::CONLON | Norma Conlon, ZKO, DTN 381-1702 | Mon Apr 21 1997 13:14 | 17 |
| | I received my info packet from them last week and happen to have it
    at work today. After reading how & when they remove the blood I
    see how it would be dangerous for multiple births.

    It states that in order to collect the blood they must clamp and cut the
    cord IMMEDIATELY after the delivery. At this point the doctor inserts
    a syringed needle into the umbilical cord vein and draws the placental
    blood. They draw between 3-8 oz of cord blood which could take up to
    3 minutes. The placenta is then delivered and discarded.

    I think it is fascinating and hope that I am able to do it when my
    3rd daughter is born this July.
