A friend of mine living out of the country, has a 2 year old that is
having difficulty sleeping. She is tired and cranky but refuses to
sleep. Finally she gave the child something called psycho-soma and
that's supposed to be some kind of relaxant to allow sleep.
This makes me nervous. Has anyone ever used anything like this?
Is this something doctors in the states would recommend?

Doctor's at Boston's Children's Hospital wrote a book called Solving
Your Child's Sleep Problem.
I don't remember drugs altho' they may be mentioned. Perhaps you could
send her a copy. It is very readable and useful.

Psyco-soma?
As in Psychosomatic?
As in a placebo that convinces some people that it is a powerful drug,
but, in actuality is nothing more than a sugar pill?
Meg, whos mother used to use a spoonful of honey on us for insominia.

I doubt that the concept of a placebo would work with a 2 year old.
I assume that this is a real medication that enables the child to
relax enough to sleep.

I don't think it is a homeopathic remedy. I have never heard of it. I
would call a homeopath to check it out. Or go check it out in the
library or book store.
At 2, nightmares usually begin. It sounds like she is afraid to sleep
because of nightmares. My son had nightmares starting at about 2. I
would let him take my pillow from my bed into his. SOMETIMES this
would work, other times it would not. I would let him sleep in my bed.
Or I would rub his back in his bed to relax him enough sleep. Tell him
his dreams are his like using his imagination while sleeping. I would
rock him to sleep. Warm milk really DOES work. A routine is very much
required at a young age. Supper, playtime, bath, book, bed. A steady
routine will do wonders.
These remedies did not always work. One day one way would work and the
others would not. Eventually, he grew out of it.
I don't think popping a pill is the answer. Fake pill or not. What
message is this giving a child? Pop a pill everytime you can't deal
with something! I am sure mom is getting tired staying up with a
little one. However, if she needs to crash in moms/dads bed once in a
while, so be it. My son will not be 20 still crashing in my bed for
comfort. So, really, give them a bit of rope. Patience. Humour!!
