My Godchild, Tommy, is apparently having some developmental
difficulties. At 28 months, he has virtually no verbal skills, does
little or no social interacting except cuddling with parents, has had
his hearing checked (OK there). My sister had been denying what we all
thought was abnormal and having been told something is wrong - is
trying to figure out how to proceed. They plan on neurological testing
at Children's hospital in Boston but are in the early days of figuring
out what to do here.
Any advice, support, references, etc. I will pass along to parents and
would be appreciated. This is a great, happy little soul that deserves
the best. Thanks.

Look in the before mentioned conference for info on PDD..pervasive
developmental delay. Evidently boys are more likely candidates and
"symptoms" (wrong word I'm sure) involve social and language skills.
A friend's 3 year old recently was diagnosed.
That's just in case the folks at Children's come back wiht a label...
Regardless of label, if there are delays, Tommy would be eligible for
Early Intervention only until he's 3 or slightly older (depending on
program, month of birth, etc.); then Chapter 766 kicks in. Having been
through it with my daughter, I can't say enough aboaut the importance of
parents connecting with parents. Tommy will learn and his family will get
through it. And they will learn to appreciate the really little things.

When my son was 2.5 and not talking much, my pediatrician made a
referral to the Early Intervention program. We were contacted by these
folks a short time later, and they sent out a specialist who evaluated
my son for developmental and speech problems. When there was a *very*
slight bit of doubt in the evaluator's assessment about his speech, she
asked the speech specialist to come see him too. (By this time he was
talking up a storm)... all this left me very impressed with the
services and evaluations available thru the EI pgm.
I'm not sure if the dr.'s referral is necessary, but shouldn't be a
problem you feel the problems are obvious.
