| | Just some general info. Is it hereditary? What does it take to get
a child stablized? Support groups for family? That type of thing.

| 356.3 | some info | AKOCOA::FULLER |  | Wed Oct 14 1992 15:39 | 27 |
| | If you have a child, or relative, that recently have been diagnosed
    with diabetes a few hints:

    1. Insist on seeing a Diabetes specialist. They have the support
systems in place to help you and your child. GP's just aren't
up to speed on all the new styles of treatment.

    2. Join the ADA they provide a wealth of information to families with
diabetes. Joslin Diabetes Foundation (JDF) is also good, however it is
    more research orientated.

Is it hereditary? There is some belief that it is, but other theories
    are more environmental.

What does it take to get a child stabilized? Not an easy question, in
simple terms its proper diet, the right amount of insulin, and right
amount of exercise. If a blood monitor is not being used, this is
now considered mandatory for diabetes control.

Support groups: ADA, in addition local hospitals usually have support
groups. JDF has a great kids camp, Clara Barton camp.

It is difficult to answer your questions, they are just to vague? It
would help to state where you are, who is being impacted, what types
of treatment is being received, etc.

| | They have a diabetes notes file that you have to contact a specific
person to get access to it. I am a member of that note and will get
you the person's name and the name of the note and post it here
    sometime today.

This note will help answer alot of your questions and they will point
you in the right direction on how to control your childs diet, etc.
You should also see an Endocronologist(sp) they are doctors who deal
    with diabeties.

| 356.6 | a disease you can live with | SONATA::SPERA |  | Thu Oct 15 1992 14:01 | 11 |
| | At about age three my brother was diagnosed as borderline diabetic. We
had the privilege of being treated by Eliot Joslin himself who
    recommended diet and exercise. My brother's case really was borderline;
he never took medicine. He's now 40 and we wait to see if there will be
    adult onset.

Adult diabetes with all its complications happens to run on both sides
of my family. What I have learned and what I want to pass on is that
diabetes is a disease you can live with. It requires discipline and can
be difficult; I don't wish it on anyone but we simply aren't afraid of
    it now.

| | My nephew was diagnosed with JD two years ago. He is now 9. He is the
greatest kid, doing exactly what he is told, eating everything that he
should and nothing that he shouldn't, but it is still not easy. He's a
growing boy and his sugar can go from 50 to 500 in a matter of hours. My
sister and her husband bear the brunt of it. Ryan must have his sugar
tested 6 times a day and he currently receives two shots each day.
This may change in the near future as his sugar is still uncontrollable
and he might have to go to 3 shots a day - something that would be a
last resort because even though it would probably solve the problem, it
would be permanent. Three shots a day is a lot for anyone to handle.

Their doctor is at Joslin - as long as my brother-in-law's Union
doesn't change insurance policies - they get a lot of support from
Joslin. The whole family (they also have a daughter who is 12) went to
a camp this summer for a long weekend. It was very therapeutic for all
of them. And they will plan to send Ryan to summer camp maybe next
year - which is NOT cheap.

My sister and her family will survive this - it has made them a
stronger. Although I, too, worry about Ryan's future, I find myself
more worried about my sister - and I find that she needs my support
    more than ever.

situation to her and she will contact you and registar you as a member
    of the note.

My mom was a diabetic for many years and my oldest brother just found

| 356.9 | Type I Diabetes Info | MKOTS3::NICKERSON |  | Thu Jan 20 1994 14:24 | 16 |
| | My 4.5 year old son was just diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. We spent
4 days at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH
(beautiful place!). I tried to contact Sue Yuryan in the previous
reply but can't find her on ELF and the mail won't go through. Does
anyone know if the Diabetes file still exists? Anyone out there with
    very young children with diabetes?

Tim (my son) is handling things very well. Better than his parents!
He has no problem with his shots (two a day) and wants to learn how to
do his own "Finger-pricks" (blood tests for sugar). Major routine
    change in the family though!

    Thanks for any info,

    Linda NIckerson

The Diabetes notes file isn't around anymore. The contact person
is apparently gone. (no longer on elf)

I probably can answer any specific questions the base noter has or
lend support. I have had diabetes for 20 years and been through
many of the hurdles. Best of luck to you and your son, the road
will be tough at times. I have known many diabetics and their
parents and have heard numerous times that the younger age group
adapts better then the adults and parents do. It just becomes a
way of life for them. They are also much more flexiable with treating
diabetes today. Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston is excellent and
can give you lots of references/pointers.

Not to make light of your situation just to point out some of the
positives. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
