Asking a politician to go on record favoring public nudity,
even if restricted to designated beaches, is expecting a bit
much, even if he does favor it. Given that most of American
society considers public nudity to be a bit bizarre (at best),
how could he/she possibly benefit from such a proclaimation?
As I see it, with the definite trend toward urbanization of
our coastline and the accompanying closing of traditional CO
beaches to nudity, the only successful opposing force can be
economic. If the French West Indies is willing to tolerate
partial and total nudity due to the importance of French and
European tourists, if Greece, Spain and parts of Portugal are
willing to do the same for Northern European tourists, then
our task is laid out for us: Encourage dependence on European
tourism.
* Ahem... But if you want to be realistic, I think the only
* force in our favor is a very gradual relaxation of what the "eye"
* perceives as "undressed". The only trend that I can see in that
* direction now is the thong. If more and more females begin to
* wear thong bikinis, female toplessness would gradually ease in
* on the heals of its acceptance. And alarm at "nudity" would
* gradually give way to acceptance of nudity at certain beaches.
* But politicians won't lead the way. They generally only follow.

RE: The last paragraph.
What do you feel about this statement? I find it to be only half
the solution. Males need to be involved in this effort also!!

Americans are so incredibly puritanical when it comes to nudity that
this is no surprise to me. This country publishes some of the
raunchiest magazines, has the most gross comedians I've ever seen but
it's still intent in prolonguing the "innocence" of children all the
way into their twenties!
And anglosaxons think that nudity is sinful and would corrupt their
young! Add to that the number of self-appointed morality guardians who
are overweight matrons who couldn't possible accept their husbands or
friends viewing well shaped young females and you get the picture. Or
rather, you don't. Whatever!

I think that he should have avoided wording his questions in a
neutral manner. Persons running for office are trying to
please as many voters as possible.
The campaign offices probably assumed that anyone who bothered
to write was on a morality crusade, since the "live and let live"
crowd doesn't ask these questions.
If the question had been worded along the lines of "Do you think
that it would be important to prosecute me?", he might have
gotten different answers from some of the candidates.

My comment was more refering to the last paragraph about the issue
of female beach goers. It isn't only females who should be pushing the
issue. Men can help by wearing thongs or g's to the beach also.

I agree. Don't expect women to carry the burden alone. If we do,
then it will become acceptable for women to wear thongs and perhaps
even go topless, but men will still have to wear full trunks. Besides,
I like to see men in thongs. So I'm counting on you guys to work with
me to push society into accepting partial nudity.
Just don't try it in Ft Lauderdale, FL. There's a town law forbidding
thongs on the beach.

Count me in.
PS
Don't they always show 'spring break' from that area? I could swear
that I've seen a lot of 'rear nudity' involved.

You're probably thinking of Daytona. Certain sections of Florida are
really clamping down on "obscenity": 2 Live Crew, Brazilian tongas,
etc.
