| 262.1 | Sandy Hook? | AIMHI::WILSON |  | Thu Aug 16 1990 09:09 | 8 |
| | Steve, I believe there is a CO beach in Sandy Hook that is supposed to
be quite nice, and quite busy. I know they were having some legal
difficulties, and don't know of the current status. But if that is
Reasonably close, it might be worth a try.

    Good luck!

    Jack

| | Yes, last I heard, Sandy Hook, down towards the Fort Hancock end,
is clothing-optional. The whole park fills up by about 9:30 on
weekends so you should get there early. I can provide directions
    if you like...

Ok...take the Garden State Parkway south 'til the exit for Route 36/
    Keansburg/Atlantic Highlands/Keyport. (I forget exactly what the
sign says but it's got at least two of the above names on there.)
Head EAST on Rt 36 all the way until you cross over the Atlantic
Highlands bridge. Sandy Hook will lie off to your left in front
of you. Go over the bridge, then the road bends to the right,
take a tight right around the jug-handle that takes you into the
park. Sandy Hook itself is a couple of miles long with the mouth
of the Navesink River to the left and the Atlantic Ocean on the
right..it is also *very* narrow and has been made an island on
several occasions by the battering of one or two particularly
bad storms. There are fishing areas on both the river and ocean
side, a wildlife reserve, several clothed beach areas, a Coast
Guard station in old Fort Hancock, and on the ocean side, just
before the Fort on the end, is from what I hear a good stretch
of nude beach. Don't know the cost for the day...sorry!

My wife and I will be visiting the New York, New Jersey, Philadephia area.
This is the only note I found that points to a CO beach in that neighborhood.
Since it's going to be her first visit (my second) to a nude beach, I want
to make sure that I don't bring her to a place with a lot of "undesirables"
to turn her off from naturism completely. Is Sandy Hook a safe place to
go to? If not, can anyone suggest another? Are these beaches at Sandy
Hook private or public? If private, do they have visitor's passes for
  non-members?
  Thanks for you help.

Does anyone have an update on Sandy Hook, .. is it still C.O. -
is it still nice? I heard the legal troubles are all done with
    and things are fine now.

ALSO - I have a 4 day weekend in June, and thought a nice trip might
be to do Atlantic City - for maybe a night, then drive down to sandy
    hook, ... or visa versa.

AND are there any hotels near sandy hook, any clubs, nightlife, things
    to do ...

    Thanks for any info!!

From Atlantic City, you'd drive *up* to Sandy Hook, it being the
northernmost tip of the Jersey shore. It's about 2.5 hrs from
    Atlantic City.

I couldn't comment on the nightlife anymore because I go home to
visit family and don't go out to clubs/bars/etc when down there.

Hmmm, sounds close to Mass. - reletively speaking!

Do you know of any night life, or shopping or nice quaint towns or
anything else of interest in the area? I really like the beach,
however - its also nice to have something to do, (and some place to
stay) when you're not at the beach.

    Thanks

I'm going home this weekend and will be back here on June 14.
(..taking a 2 week vacation to Tortola and St Martin flying to and
    from Newark).

What I could do is bring back a local paper or two from the Atlantic
Highlands/Sea Bright area and pop them in interoffice mail on 6/14.
Will that be in time for your trip?

June 14th sounds fine also. If you could do that, I'd really
    appreciate it!
