818.0. "LIVE CAT DROPPED IN SEWER - NOW AT TUFTS" by MROA::BOISVERT () Mon Oct 17 1994 05:11

    This makes me sick to even write this.  Yesterday in my neighborhood,
    someone through a live cat down the sewer.
    
    I had just started out on a walk w/my dog and I could hear this cat
    yeowling.  I thought it was stuck in a tree.  As I went down the street
    I could see a group of guys and children standing around something on
    the lawn.  Then one of the kids yelled to me 'a cat fell down the
    sewer!'
    
    When I got there a guy had just fished it out with his net.  It was
    this screaming lump of black sludge, covered with leaves and muck.  It
    had these huge amber eyes that were now the size of quarters and it was
    screaming it's brains out.  The thing was shaking so hard it could
    barely stand.  The whole scene was just so sickening.
    
    I wanted to take it to Tufts right away but someone called the Animal
    Control and I stayed & waited to see what they would do.  It was a
    young woman who pulled up and she said all she could do was bring it 
    to the Animal Rescue League and leave it in a cage.  There was no one
    on duty however and it would not even be seen until tomorrow.
    
    There was no way I could leave it like that so I ran home, got the
    carrier & brought it to Tufts as a 'drop-in'.  The vet who did a quick
    onceover said he thought the cat might be fine, just suffering from
    hypothermia.  It might also now have some septic poisoning depending on
    how much it swallowed.  (On the way to the vets I could hear the poor
    thing in the crate trying to lick itself.)  With Tufts 'drop-off'
    process, you can bring an animal in that you have found and they will
    basically do what is best for the animal w/no charge to you.  He said
    if the cat seemed fine and there was not too much money that had to be
    spent on tests, etc. they would keep it & put it up for adoption.  If
    it needed to be put down they would do that also.
    
    Well, my initial plans were to put up posters today in my neighborhood
    & put this msg in Notes.  I went back home to walk my dog & started
    asking people in my neighborhood if they knew of anyone w/a black cat. 
    It's too long to go into here but I now believe it might have been the
    owner who did this.  I have no proof of this, no one saw anybody drop a
    cat in the sewer; but this guy who lives next door to this couple is
    convinced the son did it.  Anyways, what he told me was convincing
    enough to not make me put up any posters now.  I'm just too scared. 
    The sewer is very close to that house where those people live and it
    would have been very easy to do it quickly.
    
    So.  My point now is to let you know that if this cat makes it, he is
    up for adoption at Tufts.  What I know of him is that he's young (I
    would say maybe a year or two), it's a male, and he's not neutuered. 
    He is jet black (I think, could have been the sludge though) with huge
    beautiful amber eyes.  I will call Tufts later on and put an update in
    here.  However, if you are interested in possibly adopting him, Tufts #
    is 839-5395.  I hope he makes it and I pray he gets a good home.

	Good work, Chris!! Because of your unselfish efforts, this little kitty has a decent shot at a happy life. Here's hoping he finds that loving home. Carl P.S. -- Don't you just hate people sometimes? Throw them down the sewer and see how they like it!!

	Bless your heart for saving this little kitty!! He sure deserves a wonderful loving home... As far as what I would do to the people who put him in the sewer... well that's not printable!! Some people REALLY make me sick. Sandy

	Too bad there were no witnesses. If there were, you could report them for animal abuse. I would not hesititate to take such action. Eleanor

	I did report it to the MSPCA. I don't know if they will actually pay a visit to the people I think are involved, because there is no actual proof they had a part in this. (It might not even be their cat.) However, I heard enough other stories about them to warrant at least a visit by the MSPCA, so maybe it will happen. Even if they only get a 'social call', I think it will make it's point that people are watching what they've been doing and they will be reported accordingly. Chris

	Good For You! Would you post the area code, so that we can send in donations to help defray the cost of this poor little one? Maybe that will help in his neutering etc. so that he will be that much more adoptable? Thanks! Sue & Furry Crew, who want to donate to a fellow Kitty, I think the Princess has put out a "contract" on the family that did this. News at 11:00....... (What I want to do with them is VERY INHUMANE, to say the least.

	Area Code for Tufts is 508. Poor kitty : ( Lucky Chris happened by, YET AGAIN, to save another animal : ) She has a habit of doing this...unfortunately there never seems to be a shortage of animals that need "saving" : ( PLEASE ask around for a home for this fella. Seems a shame to rescue him, only to have him put down. How manys lives does he have to risk to be happy??? Sarah

	Hey, I have good news. I called Tufts yesterday to get an idea of how long I had to find a home before Sewer Kitty (thank you, Sarah) was put down. I ended up talking to one of the interns. Now I pictured them having an official 'adoption center' there, ie., a room where all strays were kept etc. She said it is nothing like that. If someone calls & is interested in a stray, they are welcome to come and see what they have. These strays are apparently kept in the same area as all the other patients. Anyways, she said the majority of all the adoptions of these strays are in-house. She said with a place this size loaded with all animal lovers, there is rarely anything sitting in a cage for too long. She said in the entire 3 years she's worked there, she never once remembers a healthy 'drop-off' being put down. Anyways, that was music to my ears. I am still going to keep checking on him. I hope she did mean what she said and was not exaggerating. So pls say a few more prayers that someone does scoff him up. I'll keep you posted. Chris

	This will be my last update unless I hear the cat has been adopted. Tufts called again last night. They said the next part of this 'drop-off process' is an ad in the local paper for the Lost & Found. If no one claims Sewer Kitty, he will officially be up for adoption after 10 days. She said he is doing well, extremely sweet and absolutely gorgeous. He has all his adult teeth so they think he is between 1 - 2 years old. No one there has claimed an interest in him yet for their own, so he really is still in need of a good home. If you know of anyone interested in a nice cat who can use a good chance at life, pls let them know his story and have them give Tufts a call, 839-5395. Chris
