For the first time I have a cat that will be an indoor cat only. I
need any suggestions you have on how to train him to a scratching post.
Tigger loves to sharpen his claws on my living room chair and the side
of the matress on my bed (and, occasionally, me). I don't believe in
de-clawing so any help you can give me will be appreciated.
I bought him a big sisal mouse that hangs on a doorknob and he plays
with the long tail, but has not used it as a scratching post.
Thanks,
Marilyn

Well, I'm sure there are other notes here that discuss this, but I'll give you my $.02 to start with ......... we have 2 maybe 3 scratching posts around the house; whenever one of the cats (we have 5 who roam around the house and one who only stays in HER area) start scratching something inappropriate, one of us picks up the cat, takes him/her to the nearest post and moves the paws in a scratching motion on it to give them the idea......... I also *douse* mine with catnip - I buy it in the small cans, take a pinch and run it into the surface of the material - helps attract the cats to the posts !!!!!!!!!!!!! last but not necessarily least in order, using the water spray bottle if we can't grab to bring to the appropriate location but want him/her to stop............. good luck !

Whenever we had a kitten that tried to scratch elsewhere, we'd pick him/her up and hang him on the post, and pet and praise him. They'll get the idea you like them there! And I think it's fun for them to pretend they're climbing. Enjoy!

I bought one of those cardboard tray type scratching things (as seen in
Miles Kimball and other mail order catalogs for around $6 ot $7) for
a $1 in Deals for a Dollar.
The cats loved it. It has cat nip to sprinkle in the folds of
the cardboard and they loved that too. I have tried everything from
branches to expensive sisal rope covered posts to carpet covered posts,
none of them worked not even with tons of catnip rubbed in (dryed and
fresh). The cheapee cardboard tray did.

Thanks for all the help. It seems to have worked (thank goodness!). I
bought one of the cardboard scratchers and some catnip. I rubbed the
catnip into the sisal mouse I had bought before and Tigger didn't just
scratch it, he absolutely attacked it. Then I set up the cardboard one
which came with it's own catnip and set it up beside the chair he had
been using as a scratching post. Well, since then he has used the
cardboard scratcher and left the chair alone. Now I just have to get
one to put next to the bed so he'll leave the matress alone!!
Thanks again everyone.
