| In many of the cat magazines, I have seen a product, a clear acrlyic
shield that can be mounted on the couch to prevent scratching.
There are some other notes in here about this too, using balloons to
scare away the cats, furniture covers, and tape. We tried the tape
and it helped a lot. When we got the cat tree, ALL furniture
scratching was instantly eliminated. Best purchase we ever made, they
love having their own place to scratch, and hang out. Cats need at
least a scratching post to work off their old claw sheaths.

| Attach ordinary aluminium foil to the point where the cat is
scratching! They sell something called Upolstry tacks, which is like a
map tack, but the pin part is like a cork screw, to attach it into the
furniture. I told a girl friend about it, and she had to put hers on
the headboard of a bed. Sure evoked some interesting conversation
during her open house a few weeks later. Try it, it really works, the
noise scares the dickens out of the critters.
I had also heard mothballs on the floor around the funiture, as a sort
of repelant, but I can't stand the smell, and am not sure how safe they
are anyway, so I'd forget that method.
In my house all I have to do is simply pull a length of foil out of the
box (for cooking), and two cats go running. (and it isn't even intended
for them) Cheap, simple!
It's just like having kids, isn't it?
