| Could be his anal glands need expressing. My parents have a dog who's
glands become blocked, and emits an awful odor/liquid. Can you verify
the origin of the liquid (I know this sounds gross!)? If your kitty
also rubs or "scoots" his back end along the floor, this is a sign of
blocked anal glands.
Just a thought!

My male cat does that too. However, he only stinks when he
gets REALLY happy. For instance, if I pet him so much that
he gets delireous, then he falls over and starts to stink.
Depending on his mood, he can get this happy if I just
tell him he's a "good boy". I took him to the vet at first
when I noticed this as they thought it was anal glands. They
"expressed" them for him, (which he didn't like one bit) and he
still stinks sometimes. He excretes an off-white or grey fluid
from his anus, which causes the smell. (I spotted this cause
when he's this happy, he usually lies on his back.) I just
always thought that he wasn't neutered very well as he also
sticks his tail straight up and wiggles sometimes, (without
urinating). We just learned not to get him that happy as the
stuff doesn't come out of things very easily. I once had to completely
shower and change all my clothes to get rid of the scent. I
will ask my new vet about this at their annual appointment in
June.

My cat Zuzu does the same thing and she is a female. Whenever
she gets terrified of either Sophie or Emily (two semi-ferals I
have who occasionally terrorize my others to establish dominance),
Zuzu will emit a fluid that could just about bowl you over. It's
so bad that if I come into my house after a long day, I can walk
into a room where only one small drop of this fluid has been left
and notice the smell immediately. It's pretty foul.
Whenever there are spits and spats, I'm usually found chasing
Zuzu around with a tissue.....just to keep my house odor-free.

That sounds about right.
I think the time I remember it best was when I had my entire family
over, all of whom are cat allergic. They were all petting him and
stuff, and he jumped into my lap... and the smell KNOCKED ME OVER.
I was totally embarrassed, 'cause I couldn't believe that I was the
only one who noticed. I think I threw the poor dear in the bedroom and
shut the door... and changed my clothes.
The idea that he does it when he's happy kinda makes sense, but it
sounds like a total pain. I enjoy making him happy. But I *HATE* that
smell.

| My mom's cat, Sullivan, had the unpleasant habit of emptying his anal glands
at the most inappropriate times and in the most inappropriate places. This
summer, while he was 'vacationing' at my sister's while my mom was out of the
country, he had them removed.
