Conference misery::feline

    Well, I don't know his actual birthday, but ONE year ago today,
    Demetrios S. Pussycat, Esq (aka "Jimmycat") was adopted and became a
    NAMED partner in THE FIRM!
    
    For a guy that was feral so long, he certainly has made a GREAT indoor
    kitty (with a super-loud purr). What a pussycat!

    And today, I'd like to wish Nikoloas S. Pussycat, Esq a combined happy
    adoption day and happy nameday! So, I guess that means that he has been
    a named partner in THE FIRM for about 5 years now. 
    
    Niky was the first feral that I captured and adopted,and I he has been
    such a sweatheart it made me not think twice about taking in all the
    other ferals in the neighborhood!

    Belated birthday wishes to TK, who has been with us for 3 years since
    Thanksgiving week.  Since I don't know his true age or
    birthdate, we will celebrate in November when I finally collected him
    from the dregs of feral life.  It's been smooth sailing ever since!!
    
    Since I was on vacation Thanksgiving week, I will say happy adoption
    day/birthday now.

    Happy Birthday to my best friend Truffles!! She is seven years old
    today!!!  Truffles is a 15lb. Maine Coon kittie that I adore.  Tonight
    her five feline companions and I will have a party. (shrimp for them)  
    cake for me.
    
    

    Happy Birthday to Latisse and Westie and Limoges.  Mogee was 3 on
    December 1st, and Westie and Latisse will be 3 tomorrow.
    
    Mogee hasn't mellowed with age at all!  I keep waiting for her to slow
    down.  Last night she gave me a love "kiss" on my cheek and I have the
    scars to prove it!  Hey, maybe I should look into a lawsuit!  Assault
    and battery... ;'D
    
    I think in honor of her birthday I may let Mogee have some Turkey soup
    tonight. Last night I was trying to eat a bowl with her right in my face. 
    She even swiped a cracker right out of my hand.

    She bit me twice last night...both hard enough to leave marks, and both
    on my face.  She gives these love bites.  I am starting to think that
    she is coming into season cuz she has been beacoup friendly lately.  If
    that is the case I better find myself some armor.  She will be biting
    the you-know-what out of me! Oh no, here comes Mogee, run for your

    Happy Happy Adoption day to my little Abby.   It was a year ago
    today that I brought you home from the DLB building in Marlboro.
    All I can remember was your first vet visit...when I thought
    you were filled with worms...and the vet looked at me and said
    "how many cats do you have at home....how about another 6 or 7"
    Yikes...how I panicked when we knew you were pregnant...I was in
    total shock for days!!  But...once I got use to the idea and took quick
    lessons in being a Mom (thanks to NDC, Jo and Cindy Gerry)...you 
    lost your babies...and we all grieved together.
    
    Your a little honey bun and have brought us so much joy! Again
    Happy Adoption day!!

    Happy "capture" day to Bob (and Jasmine) on the 17th and 
    Happy "capture" day to Dusty on the 10th.  It was 2 years ago
    this month that we captured 4 little raggamuffins at Weymouth
    commons apartments.  Now Bob weighs in at around 17 lbs and
    has a purr that sounds like a motorboat.
    

    Cleo, the light of my life, the one who makes life interesting, fun,
    loving and warm is 6 years old today.

well, since my precious Birman, Dilly, was born on January 20, and I was born
on January 21....

Dilly and I are celebrating our birthdays today...she is one year old today.
I am 45.  We celebrated with a rousing game of "monster under the blanket"
this morning....at 04:00 AM....it wasn't MY idea, but Dilly was quite delighted
with the whole idea....and, because she is so unbelievable adorable, I
actually began to enjoy the idea.  Hannah then whapped me on the head which
brought me back to my senses...anyway...

	Happy Birthday, Dilly, and may we both have many, many, many
		more together!!!

    Today is my beautiful Birman, Lizette's 4th birthday.  She is observing
    it as she does most days, by sleeping late in the morning, having a
    long afternoon nap, an early evening nap, and a long night's sleep.

    I am posting this for Bonnie Hussian who has moved on to a non-Dec
    permanent job (Yea! No more contract stuff.)  Bonnie sent mail
    yesterday asking me post a note to wish her kitties, Callie and
    Tabitha, a Happy Birthday.  Their birthday was February 1st.  Sorry
    for the delay but I was out sick yesterday.

    Today is probably Misty's 8th birthday.  Our friend and vet whgave us
    Misty in '86, figured out how old she was when he found her, and
    counted back figured her birthday was Feb 6 or 7.  Since the 7th is my
    birthday, I decided it would be hers too.  Maybe that's why we seem to
    have such a special bond.  She is my almost constant companion in the
    morning when I'm getting ready for work, and in the evening when I get
    home.  She comes to bed as soon as I'm there, and snuggles around my
    head on the pillow, or crawls under the covers.  She is super lovecat. 
    She is also very smart and seems to understand what I tell her.  I love
    all my cats, but there is something very special about my Misty-poo.

    Well, now that we've officially gone into the Zodiac sign of Aries I
    can wish Pippin a very happy birthday - 8 years old and many many more
    to you sweetheart.
    
    Oh by the way, she's gained almost 1 lb since her bout with the Kidney
    problem - Dr. Scott was very pleased.  The blood test - the BUN just
    slightly elevated but everything else was back to way within normal. 
    Words of reassurance were - "I really think she'll be able to live a
    full life".

I couldn't access this conference yesterday, so I had to wait until today
to announce that these two scamps are now one year old. Malcolm has accepted
them and they are quite the family now. Thank you Janice for introducing the
three of us last year.

    This is a combined birthday note.  I don't want to forget someone when
    their day comes up later so I'm covering all the close ones at the same
    time (Carrie will have to wait till August).
    
    April 19th - Bailey...You were the first cat that ever owned me.  When 
                 I picked you up and held you that very first time at
    		 Miller's Pet Adoption Center at the flea market, I knew
    	         I really didn't want one of those maine-coon type cats
                 I'd come in looking for, I really wanted a blue-cream
    		 baby with a personality like a candy bar...50% sweetness
                 50% nuts.  I love you!!!  Happy 6th Birthday!
    
    April 30th - Amelia...When they handed me this little tabby and white
                 fluffball and showed me how easy you were to handle, I
                 couldn't resist.  Boy am I glad I didn't.  You have shown
                 me just how lovable cats can be.  You are the light of
                 my life and I'm so glad I had the chance to be owned by
                 you.  I love you!!!  Happy 6th Birthday!
    
    May 5th    - Onyx...My newest baby and one and only little boy.  I knew
                 as I watched you playing around the patio that you were
                 someday going to come inside and have your own human to
                 own.  When I finally got you inside and had to nurse you
                 through that abcess in your cheek I was pretty sure that
                 human would be me.  Onyx, my formerly feral feline, I love

    very happy birthday to Ears 2 U Grand Marnier, (Marnie to all who know

    adorable Scottish Fold.  He still has that precious baby face, and he
    still acts kittenish.  He also has an amazing way of materializing in
    the kitchen when we are giving Misha or Lizette some special food.

    That adorable blind cat, Beth, phoned this morning to say Hooray,

    It's really only been 10 months.  The Maine-iacs were 2 months old when
    I trapped them.  ...so, in mid-July I can celebrate my 1st anniversary
    -- 1 year of cats.  (The dog is pretty fed up with all this.)

    Last night Scot and I went out to toast Bagheera and Onyx's birthday
    at El Toritos.  It was Cinco de Mayo after all.  We had a wonderful
    time but we've decided that Onnie O'Kitty will have to change his name
    once a year on his birthday to Onnie O'Gato.  It just doesn't fit for
    a cat with an Irish name to have a birthday on Cinco de Mayo. ;-)

    Today is Misha's 3rd birthday.  I'll never forget the Sunday, 3 years
    ago when he and his 3 sisters were born.  That was an incredible day. 
    It was our first experience with birthing cats.  Misha is now a big,
    beautiful boy, (not quite as big as we want, but hopefully the
    medicines are doing good work and he'll start gaining his weight back). 
    He took his meds like a grownup this morning instead of his usual fuss. 
    Maybe he feels a little more grown-up this morning. ;-)

    Happy birthday #1 to Edgell-the-street-cat, who chose us one cold
    night last October, and who has learned (from the 3 Maine-iacs) how to
    share toys, how to not use his claws, how to chirp, and how to relax.
    He has taught me how cats can flip out of harnesses in under 5
    seconds, how to jump over him when he suddenly flops on his side
    for petting, and that purring with his jaw hanging open means he's
    really happy.

	Oh, the joys of motherhood...Getting up at 1 AM, 3 AM and
	5 AM to feed a squalling infant, while Daddy snores away...
	Smelling like formula and poo when you get to work...Finding
	a good babysitter (ie Grandma)...Dealing with a baby that's
	not quite sure what it wants, but cries anyways, getting louder
	and louder with every attempt you make to figure out what's
	wrong...

	*Sigh*  I wasn't ready for motherhood. It just sort of *happened*.
	Well, I took precautions. But, well...YOU know....And now I'm
	stuck with it... :)

	Well, I suppose it's not all that bad. I mean, he is kindof
	cute. Even if he does look like a hamster...! Yes, hamster. I
	think that's his name for now. Hamster...He's orange and white,
	and about 2 days old. We found him screaming in the middle of 
	our front lawn, no mommy in sight. What could we do? Off to the
	vets at 7 o'clock on a sunday night to get some KMR and a kitten
	bottle.....He's actually quite active (and LOUD), and seems to
	be very healthy. Never saw any sign of his mom, he was in the 
	yard for about an hour (gee, honey, that's a strange sounding 
	bird, isn't it?). 

	Thanks to Nancy DC and Roberta for being there when I called 
	shortly after the `delivery', haha...Let's all hope he makes
	it, although Squeeky, Sara, and Katie are NOT amused... :)

    We figure Chubs and Zelda are two years old today.  My birthday is on
    the shortest day of the year so why not allow theirs to be on one of
    the longest days?  In honor of the occasion, my husband surprised all
    of us.  He went out and bought new toys for the brats.  He also bought
    a harness that (barely) fit Chubs.  Chubs wasn't overly thrilled with
    it but we insisted on taking him out for a walk.  Guess what happened
    when we brought this tub outside?  He ran back in the house.  :^)  He
    tried many ways to maneuver his body out of the harness but it just
    didn't work.  We also tried the harness on Zelda and fortunately she
    wasn't as freaked by it as Chubs.  They were a bundle of laughs today!  
    
    Everyone that knows us comments on how lucky the cats are to have had
    us adopt them yet when my mother recently met the cats she made a
    comment that we were the lucky ones to have found such cuties.  She
    certainly was right!  Time to go open up a few cans of fancy feast and
    bring out a few slices of ham for the mogs.  For the humans, brownie
    hot fudge sundaes and champagne.  We need some kind of excuse to woop
    it up this evening.  :^)

    Happy Purrthday to my little girl Poco who as of June 28th will
    turn age 3.   Poco and my beloved boy Tamba were companions who
    always laid in each other arms...I swear they were truly in love.  
    After Tamba passed away...Poco has yet to find a new loving companion 
    with any of my cats. (she has many to choose from...but!!)
    
    Poco has turned her energy into redecorating our house.  She does
    not like the wall paper in my living room so has started to tear
    it down....she also does not like where the bird cage is...so
    we have had attempts to climb up to the ceiling.  She also loves
    water so the C.A.T. never works with her!!  
    
    She is our little she-devil...but we love her so!! Happy Birthday

    Last night a little voice told me to check my calender, to see when
    Rico's birthday is.  I always think that it is close to Alex's, at the
    end of July...
    
    It is June 29!
    
    So, to make up for it, we gave Rico lots of love and attention, some
    extra treats (we gave Alex some, too - it would be like giving the
    birthday boy his cake, but not giving any cake to his sister), and some
    catnip.  A friend is going to buy him a nice, new, memory-free Mousie.
    
    Usually Rico is all over us on his birthday, but this is his first

    Well, everyone will be out of the office on Friday, so I'll say Happy,

The Jersey Flash will be celebrating her second birthday this week...a
tasteful, albeit a little rowdy, fete is planned....she requests that all
kitty motorcycles be parked in the backyard where Sadie( the dog ) has agreed
to serve as parking valet.  We think a nice meal of poached salmon and
baby shrimp will suffice to sustain the partygoers....you felines out there
watch you kitty mailbox for your invitations!

    Well, this birthday is late getting in the file but we celebrated
    it right on time at home.
    
    Carrie Nation (the feline version that is) celebrated her birthday on 
    August 8th.  She is 4 years old.  
    
    Jo Ann brought Annie (el-huge-o dog) over on Saturday and to celebrate 
    her birthday, Carrie proceeded to attack the screen door where Annie was 
    standing.  Poor Annie, she didn't know what was going on as Carrie
    puffed up her fuzzy body and wacked the screen with her paws.  She was a 
    veritable attack cat in motion that Carrie girl.  Didn't know she had it 
    in her.  You shoulda seen how puffed up this cat got.  
    
    Well, now there is no stopping her.  Since she turned 4 and has stood up 
    to a mondo-dog, she is challenging the hierarchy left and right demanding 
    her rightful place closer to the top.  The bottom of the totem-pole is
    no place for a cat that can challenge an Annie-dog (even if it was
    through the screen). ;-)

    I have been remiss, lots of Birthdays snuck past me.
    
    April 25th, Happy Belated Birthday to my Dream.  She was two years old
    and just as kittenish as always.
    
    July 30th, Happy Belated Birthday to my little Satin Doll.  Another two
    year old kitten.  In honor of her Birthday she promptly came into
    season.
    
    August 5th, Happy Birthday to Annie the Mondo-Dog who is now 3 years
    old and finally settling down. :')
    
    August 6th, a special day for me since it would have been the birthday
    of a special cat that is no longer with us.
    
    And, just in case I forget in the whirlwind that will be next week
    (getting ready for Medina), a very special Birthday to our foundation
    queen, and the matriarch of Mysinhs, Joui.  She will be 6 years old on
    August 20th.  Hard to believe.

    I would like to wish a very happy birthday to Purrlin's Kelsey, who is
    4 years old today.  Kelsey is my sealpoint Ragdoll cat, and he is a
    very special boy to me, having lost two of his siblings at very early
    ages due to heart disease.  Each year when Kelsey makes it to another
    birthday I feel so lucky he is still with me, and hope he is around for
    many years to come.
    
    I would also like to say happy birthday to Shalimar, Kelsey's litter
    sister who lives with a friend of mine in Milford.  We often joke about
    reuniting them someday, as their personality traits are identical in
    every sense.  They both hate all the other cats in their house!

    Happy 16-and-a-half-years to my (Salem, MA) witch kitty, Moon.
    
    21 *months* ago, I noticed that she had a hard bump on her forehead
    (where her "3rd eye" would be!), and the vet said "9 months."  The bump
    is cancer of the bone (or cartilage; she couldn't tell, but said
    cartilage would grow slower) and not the type that usually
    metastasizes.  And kitties have a big sinus right under that position,
    which would buy her some time....
    
    A year ago (at the 9-month mark), Moon sneezed a fine red spray.  I
    totally "lost it", figuring this was the end; we had one quality-time
    day, then I brought her in to the vet for what I thought might have to
    be goodbye.  After all, how would I know if Moon had been walking
    around with a horrendous migraine all that time?!
    
    After examining Moon, my wonderful lady veterinarian said "Leslie, I
    don't think *you're* ready to let her go now!"  She said it was really
    fairly simple to tell when a cat is in pain: it sits.  It doesn't eat,
    it doesn't walk around, it doesn't use the litter box, it doesn't purr.
    
    Today Moon is still spry and sassy, purring (well, vibrating) up a
    storm, and taking our abuse (we call her the Great Horned Meowl; we ask
    how her antler is doing today  :-} ).  Actually, the Magic (aka
    praying) seems to be working on the antler; it's protruding alarmingly
    (she gets food on it at mealtime :-P ) but doesn't seem to be growing
    symmetrically *inward*.
    
    Straying off the birthday topic, I know, sorry.... but I wanted to
    celebrate this joyous Half, which is three halves more than I thought
    we'd see.  :-)

    Moon's story.....you have given me a little more hope then I
    originally had.
    
    Recently I have taken in a rescue kitty that has an inoperable
    cancerous tumor on his face....the vet said he'd probably live a
    few weeks to a few months...but that was it!!!  It has been only
    a three weeks...and my kitty is still holding it's own....yup I have
    to wipe his nose once in awhile...and he may drool...or get food
    stuck on the bump...but he still eats like a little pig, walks around, 
    uses the litter.....and truly loves our company.
    
    Of course Sass can have whatever he wants...whenever he wants it..
    and I just pray for extra time for him...hopefully he isn't ready to 
    give up either!!
    
    Moon deservse a big party tonight and your story put a little extra
    hope in my heart...and smile on my face!!!

Happy Acquisition Day (a day late) to Master Simon LaFeet Romberg.  It was 
October 14, 1991 that I brought home this weedy little 2-pound black boy
with huge feet from the shelter.  He ain't 2 pounds any more (probably closer 
to 12) still has big feet, still likes his tummy rubbed and still loves to
play with soda bottle caps (I just fished *15* of them out from under my 
stove!!!.)

    The P celebrated his birthday by learning how to dump over his water
    dish!  Visions of bygone days with Kalliste and the water bowl struggle
    abound!! :')  I must have refilled P's water 5 times on Saturday, only
    to come back in his room to find the bowl upside down in the middle of
    the carpet.  Now his bowl is a ceramic soup mug, and hopefully that
    will be too heavy to dump until I come up with another solution.

    Oh No!! Mom forgot to put in a happy birthday wish her little
    rastifarian (sp).  The Reste Man was 2 years old on February 3rd.
    Unfortunately, the little dummy ate part of the chuck that I hung in
    his stud pen the night before and had to spend his birthday at the
    vet's while the vet and I tried to decide whether barium x-rays were
    necessary or if he would pass it himself.  Luckily for all of us he did
    not have to have barium, or surgery and went home a happy camper the
    next day.

    I can't believe I forgot to note here yesterday!  Moon (see .99) got a
    whole can of Geisha tuna (with one candle  ]:3 ) for dinner last night
    and hardly touched the floor for all the hugging she got.
    
    Six months haven't really made a difference in her health!  Her right
    eye is almost completely shut now, but she compensates for it well. 
    The only klutzy thing I've noticed is that if she tries to jump on my
    lap (from the side, going under my elbow and arm) without announcing her 
    intentions first so I can clear a path, she often misjudges her headroom 
    and bonks the "antler".  This throws her off and she lands
    ignominiously on the floor (licklicklicklick--embarrassment bath),
    which is hilarious but sad too....  She's a little louder now when she
    does her hollering in the hall, but I really think that crotchety-old-
    lady-b!tching, because she does hear tiny noises.  (Hey, I see her
    ears move, even if she chooses to feign deafness.)  She's more
    insistent on attention: instead of lying next to my book and gradually
    encroaching on it, now she will *stand* implacably *on the book* and
    when I nudge her to move along, she'll *lean into it*!
    
    I guess at 119 (17 years x 7 conversion factor?!) she can decide who
    reads what when, and who can be petted on command!

    Thanks!  Yup, Moon has turned into a bossy-boots in her dotage, but
    she's also really a big softie.  I love it when she "yells" at me,
    with an annoyed look on her face; I raise my eyebrows and look right
    back at her and say "whassa MADDA?!" but of course it usually means 
    "more food!".  Trouble is, she "antler-butts" a lot of her food off her 
    plate, then either doesn't see/smell it or deems it contaminated.  (I 
    think it's the latter, because she policed up the tuna perimeter last
    night with no problem!)
    
    Then the wretched ingrate *stepped* on my *eye* last night in bed... I
    wouldn't have minded, but she was slipping and it was a clawed (hind)
    foot.  Yeeowch!

    Dame Agatha Christie wishes her brother and personal feline companion,
    the Honorable Colonel Sebastian Moran, DROFFC, a very happy second
    birthday. She also requests that some KNOWING feliner instruct her
    ignorant mother on how much catnip is appropriate. The Colonel was
    presented with a large track-ball/scratching place toy which Mother too
    liberally anointed with catnip. The Colonel enjoyed his toy all
    evening, but was hardly himself for several hours. At one point, he was
    lying in the middle of the toy getting hit in the head with the ball
    every time it came around, batting the ball again, getting hit
    again....

    Col. Bob and I send felicitations to our favorite feline colonel on his
    second birthday.
    
    We got the same toy for our cats and they, (especially Marnie) enjoy
    it.  I just sprinkled a little catnip on it.  I guess it wasn't too
    much, since no one acted sillier than usual. ;-)

    May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) is Onyx's 2nd birthday.  He was the 
    kitten with the most problems in his litter.  I spent a lot of
    time nursing him through the removal of a foxtail from his nose
    at 8 weeks (he was feral until that time), an abcess in his cheek
    and a kitty cold.  He has turned into one of the most beautiful
    panther-like cats I've ever seen.

    Oh geez, what a rotten mom I am.  I forgot to post that Amelia
    Earhart celebrated her 7th birthday on April 30th.  She's my
    sweetest baby.  I can't believe I forgot to announce her birthday.

    I am most delighted to wish Harry (the Rat) a healthy and hearty 3rd
    Birthday on May 3rd.
    
    When I found him in a mall pet store, he was a gangly, long-legged
    beastie with HUGE gray and pink ears, labeled a white with gray "patio
    cat," with the most lovable little charcoal beauty mark on his upper
    lip......
    
    He grew to full (!) size at 22 pounds, but since I got feisty little
    Babycakes, he has exercised off 2-3 of it chasing and being chased and
    generally tumbling.
    
    He has a sweet tiny voice, and when I am in the bathroom and *must*
    close the door, he sits outside and "mews" pitifully like a baby ..... 
    quite remarkable considering his size.
    
    Anyway, he's a love, and instead of calling him Harry-the-Rat, I now
    prefer just old Harry, or sometimes "my sweet rat-boy" ... but don't
    tell anyone .....

    ..... And, since Babycakes (nee BugEyes) has no certain birthdate, but
    Sandy and Priscilla guessed her to be around 1-1/2 when I got her, I
    might as well declare her officialy TWO!  
    
    ..... And she's so cute and sweet, and makes such a good companion for
    both Harry and me .... and always has this wonderful expression of
    amazement on her little foreshortened face!
    
    I just know Mousemeat, Charlie Crapcloset, Joseph, Mr. Jones, Safeway, 
    Mr. Kitty, Ms. Kitty, and Wumpkin (all fur angels) are poking their
    noses over the clouds, looking down at my two and purring in
    approval.....

    Yes, Happy Birthday to all the May babies (Gemini cats?)!  I have two
    here:  Tas, the sealpoint piglet, is 5 on May 11, and Smudge, my Calico
    girl, will be 6 sometime this month (she was a shelter baby.  I keep
    her papers along with all the Siamese papers, even though hers reads
    "unwanted litter").

    And a happy 18th birthday to my lovely Midnight.  We decided early May
    was to be her birthday, as she was a rescue.  My daughter brought her
    home from school, where she had been found on the outside of the
    window, on the second floor.  She was a very sick, very small, *very*
    thin kitten - but the vet, who didn't give us much hope for saving her, 
    said she was about 7 months old.  She has turned out to be a lovely, 
    graceful, dignified lady, and my special friend.  Shrimp around, I
    think, plus some catnip.

    Goodness, what will we do with you!  We hope you and your

    I want to wish happy Birthday to my "youngster".  
    
    Bandit has been with us for Three years today!  He's a half Siamese,
    and has a black mask on his face so he looks like a "bandit".  
    
    My friend has his brother whom she names "dirtbag"  OK it's not the
    most gracious name but I understand it came because he was always
    trying to get *through* the trashbags at the food leftovers.
    
    These cats were aquired by checking these notes from someone who worked
    in MRO, (Robin Lodi are you still out there anywhere?).  Both cats aer
    absolute indoor cats, and demand to be held, babied and loved, and I am
    ever glad to give them all the love they demand.
    
    It started out as a birthday present from my girlfriend's husband.  He
    wanted to give her a kitten first, but somethign unusual.  So I found
    the perfect one.  Trouble was there were two of them, so since my
    friend and I share the same birthday (today), we each got a real live
    birthday present!  I just couldn't take one kitten and ignore the
    other.

    I would like to wish a very happy birthday to my Ragdoll cat, Kelsey,
    who will be 5 years old on Saturday, August 28th.  Hard to believe we
    have made it this far!!
    
    His human slave will be cooking up some chicken tenders (white meat of
    course!) so both he and his partners in crime, Taja and Herbie, can
    celebrate.
    
    I hand-picked Kelsey before he was even born, and as luck would have
    it, his mom produced him for me.  Thanks, Willow!!
    
    The boys wanted to have a party (catnip bash) and invite some of the
    local cats, but mom put her foot down because they haven't learned to
    clean up after themselves yet.  They are quite miffed at me right now.

    live plants, where can I get catnip for my boys? Is is fresh or dry
    and how do I give it to them, what form, amount etc. Thanks in advance
    I have only been rewarding my cats with Tuna, chicken etc. but catnip
    sounds like a treat for Friday nights ;-)

    Catnip toys and fresh catnip can be purchased at any pet supply store. 
    The loose catnip is dry and sold in plastic bags.  If you buy a catnip
    toy, the best brand I have found that has the most potent catnip smell
    is Dr. Daniels.  With the loose catnip, I just sprinkle a handful on
    the carpet and the cats roll around in it and eat it.  It is messy
    stuff!!
    
    A helpful hint for catnip toys that have lost their potency:  Squish
    the toy in your hand a few times.  It will liven up the catnip and
    bring the smell back.

    You can get dried catnip in bags from just about any pet supply store.
    
    Some cats like it fresh (undried) off the plant, but most seem to
    prefer it dried.  BTW, the plant's very easy to grow.
    
    We've always given catnip just by putting a small amount (a teaspoonful
    or less) in a little mound on the floor.  If you want to be neater, you
    can put it on a paper plate or something like that, but if your cat
    responds to catnip (not all do) that won't make much difference.  They
    usually start by sniffing it, then eating it, then rolling in it.
    
    And, I should note, Merlin's 18th birthday is/was sometime this month.
    So he's not "almost" 18 anymore, he is 18, and he's holding up quite
    nicely.

    Hi Steffi!
    That's a good question!!  They are all born white and the color 
    develops as they adjust to the temperature outside the womb.
    
    So far, I am pretty sure the little girl is blue, not sure yet if
    she will be a lynx or solid point.  The little boy also looks
    like he could be blue but is darker. I think he may be a solid
    point, but will have to wait to be sure!!
    
    Today is the first week birthday!  They are doing very well and have
    more than doubled their weight.  they know me by smell already too!
    It was funny, I had a curry dish for dinner last nite and I washed, but
    it must have still smelled.  Anyway, I went in to check them and pet 
    them and the little boy was hissing at me!  He has never done that
    before!  After he adjusted to my handling he was okay.  Their eyes
    aren't even open yet!

    Today is Lizette's 6th birthday.  She celebrated by having some pate
    supreme last night, and some this morning (before her morning nap). 
    She'll have the rest of the can this evening.   She is such a beautiful
    girl, and isn't showing her age at all.  It must be all her beauty sleep. 
    She spent the night snuggled at my side, and I guess she'll spend most
    of the day snoozing also.  What a life.  She has Bob so well trained. 
    When he walks into the kitchen, she runs in, floats up to the counter
    and asks for some food.  She usually gets it. ;)

    Happy First Birthday, Devin.  It's only been 4 months since we adopted
    you, and you have made yourself such an important part of our life. 
    You are the sweetest, lovingest boy, always purring and licking us and
    wanting to be with us.  We love watching you sleep on your back with
    your paws curled up.  You get into the cutest positions. We know you feel 
    very safe and trust us.  We jokingly said that you belong to the pound
    a month club.  When we got you, you were a slim 8 pounder, now you are
    about 12 pounds of muscle.  Boy, those little feet are sharp when you walk 
    over me, when I'm trying to sleep.  Marnie enjoys playing with you, but
    please try not to get too rough.  Don't forget that Marnie is about
    half your size.  Dev, you have the most beautiful little face with huge
    green eyes and you already did very well at 2 cat shows.  You are also
    very smart and curious and a wonderful addition to our family.

    Tomorrow is Wrigley's and Jumper's birthday (near as I can figure). The 
    youngest in the family, they will be three years old. It's hard to 
    believe -- they still act like kittens.

    Wrigley is a rough-and-tumble, shorthaired red-tabby-and-white neutered 
    male. He appeared early one morning in my driveway, a scruffy, homeless, 
    4-month-old kitten. A month later I adopted Jumper, who, as a tiny 
    kitten, was found in a box at the shelter where I volunteer. Jumper is 
    a shorthaired black neutered male, very petite and dainty looking. 

    Perhaps because of their early life experiences, they are both very, 
    very crafty, especially when it comes to food (as in stealing *my* 
    food). For this reason, I affectionately refer to them as "the two 
    little weasels", Wrigley Weasel and Jumper Weasel (or Baby Weasel, 
    'cause Jumper still looks like a baby). 

    W & J have three "brothers" and two "sisters." We all wish you a happy 
    birthday, guys! Treats for all!

    A big hug to Barkley who's rescue day is March 17th and he has
    been with us for 4 years and we estimate his age around 8. 
    Barkley was the FIRST kitty I rescued from my neighborhood  
    (look what he started..)  and he has been top cat ever since!!
    
    And a special big hug to my Tamba who's Birthday would have 
    been on March 20th.  Tamba passed away about 2 1/2 years ago 
    from heart problems when he was only 2.  There isn't a day
    that goes by that he is not in my thoughts....he was a very
    special kitty.

    They were 9 (!) years old on Friday.  It is hard to believe that the
    tiny little ball of black and white fluff that climbed up Jerry's leg,
    (even as a baby Spots knew what she wanted,) and demanded to be taken
    home is now a beautiful big 13 pound bundle of opinions, fur and PURRR!
    
    The Princess is still her delicate and precious self.  She has the
    sweetest face and disposition you can imagine, (unless of course we
    have misinterpreted her wishes!)  
    
    They are two of my three furry babies and I am so luck to have been
    taken over by such experts in training Humans!

	We've had Smucky for 5 months now and I know he was born last March,

	He has turned out to be a fun loving kitty.  He's a black TUX kitty,
very playable, hugable, and "loveable"!!!!!!

	He is FIV----------but we're hoping for LOT's more Birthdays!!!  This
coming weekend, first free one, gonna cook him up some nice chicken, with a

    My Black Thunder has made it to her 6th birtday.  Twice what I was told
    her expected life span would be.  I Think it is wonderful.  Now I
    really know why I dubbed her the *WONDER KITTY*.  Her birthday is today 
    and I want everyone to wish her a happy birthday.  
    
    I also want to give thanks to all you wonderful noters that helped me 
    through such a trying time 4 years ago when she was diagnosed with 
    *CANCER*...  She hasn't had a recurrence in 4 years and I hope to keep it 
    that way forever.

    Well, I'd better put this in here now before I forget.
    
    Angus "Mac" MacGuyver is celebrating his 2nd birthday (and the
    end of his 1st year in the Cordes household) on March 28th.
    
    Being owned by this cat has truly been an experience in patience
    and understanding.  He has gone from being a semi-feral, aggressive
    cat to being a very lovable (though still agressive) cat.  It only
    takes us 20 minutes now to clip his claws and I don't even have to
    wear leather gloves any more. :^)  
    
    Just last year around this time I was being chased around my living 
    room by a feline monster with ears plastered to the back of his head 
    and a wild look in his eye because he was not happy about being 
    groomed or handled.  His first response to anything he didn't like
    at that time was to bite...hard...and hang on.
    
    He's now Mr. Pussycat.  He wants enormous amounts of attention.  He
    jumps from the floor to my arms (running the length of my body in 
    the process) and never once nicks me with a claw.  He gives really
    good hugs (I mean it, he really holds on with his paw around your
    neck and no claws showing).  His response to things that annoy him
    now is to get up and leave instead of biting.  He really has come
    a very long way.
    
    So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAC!  Your momma loves you very much.

    He's gone from threatening to kill me and fighting as I try to

    row (then he threatens to kill me :^).  Maybe it's the tons of 
    praise and kisses on the nose I'm giving him.

    Last week we sent a birthday card to Schuco, and last night we all got
    one in return, with some wonderful pictures of a grown up Shuco and her
    adoptive brothers.  She's got Blueberry's build, Rocky's long coat, and

    Belated Happy Birthday (yesterday) to my guy, Peanut !!  He was such

    Today is the 4th birthday of the cutest little cat ever.  
    
    Ears 2 U Grand Marnier celebrated this morning with some fresh salmon pate 
    and some fresh water from my sink.  He seemed to enjoy the kisses and hugs 
    bestowed upon him by his adoring parents.  He is now sprawled on the
    sewing machine cabinet in the sun, enjoying a well deserved nap.

    Wishing a happy third birthday to the Honorable Colonel Sebastian
    Moran, DROFFC. The Colonel has acknowledged receipt of a lovely fenced
    in run, 43 x 45 feet of galvanized cyclone fencing, 6' high, in the
    back yard. He spent some time yesterday subduing enemy leaves and
    lolling in the sun. In his magnanimity, the Colonel has graciously
    allowed this canine sister and brothers to share his new run. He is
    also enjoying his new condo and some gourmet Bonkers. He says all this
    will do until I decide to spoil him properly.

    Happy birthday to our furry Chowder, who turns 6 today.  Actually,
    her full name is AcmeCats Deluxe Clam Chowder, and she's a purebred
    Maine Coon Cat.
    
    I hope you get your birthday wish, Chowder, that Mocha quits being such
    a pain and lets you come down out of the cat tree all the time.

    Skrufy and Veto turned a year old on Saturday (5/21) - actually I don't
    know their true birth date, so I chose the 21st because it was a new
    moon in '93 (I think it was an eclipse, in fact).  They, like their
    predecessor Moon, are all-black shorthairs, so to my mind a new moon
    fits.
    
    The boys were given a "lit" can of light tuna (one birthday candle
    stuck in it!) and seemed delighted with the presentation, the song, the
    flame AND the tuna.  They didn't even shy when I blew the candle out. 
    Veto tuned everyone out in prandial bliss; Skrufy had a discreet amount
    and then retired to the gift event.  He's the Mighty Pillow Hunter who
    destroyed a (Hartz Mountain?) crochet ball in his kittenhood, so we
    gave him another one.  He spent at least a half hour psyching it out,
    planning its ambush, torture and eventual demise... this included
    feigned interest in a catnip mouse and a finger puppet he had
    appropriated from my daughter, all in an effort to lull the crochet
    ball into a false sense of security.
    
    The next day it appeared that Skrufy had treated himself somehow to a
    hot-oil treatment; we still can't figure out how he transformed himself
    into a greaseball, but he has non-aromatic oil on his body fur and
    quite a lot of it all over his tail!  I was frantic at first, thinking
    it might be some kind of bug repellent/poison, but we never found the
    spill and if it smells like anything, it's mineral oil.  I've been
    calling him the PI nickname "Luigi" til he gets himself cleaned up, and
    he seems none the worse (gastro-intestinally) for the episode, though
    his dignity has suffered mightily.  It has occurred to me that it might

    Our little Mocha, a Havana Brown female, is six years old today.
    Her full name is Kapalua Deluxe Mocha.  Her kitty daddy and mommy
    are Kapalua Touch of Class and Kapalua Butterfly.  Mocha is one of
    our clan of six sweeties.  We feel very lucky to be owned by her.
    Tonight she gets her favorite treat (the other 5 do too) and lots of

     junkyard kitty.  It was 5 years ago on November 6th, I was
     told you weren't going to survive.   You have turned into
     a 15 pound bundle of love!
    
     Also Happy Happy Rescue Day to Van Gogh on November 21st.
     You have cost us mucho bucks...we have gone through alot 
     of trauma...but your worth it all.  Believe it or not...it's
     been 3 years since he had is Megacolon Operation at Tufts!!
    
     And even though I have not even introduced you yet...Happy
     Rescue day to Capone, my last stray I have fed for well
     over 2 years.   It's amazing you were rescued on the same
     exact day (11/21) as Van Gogh....and you need our help
     just as much as he did.  Some day...big boy...you'll look
     back and appreciate what we are doing for you.  But..PLEASE
     heal quickly....and I hope I can teach you that not all
     humans are bad!!!

	Gee, this reminded me...a Happy Rescue Day Birthday to Gypsy, too.
	Nov. 15 was one year that we've been together!  Guess I'll use that
        date as his birthday!!

	He's getting along great with Sabrina and Kabuki, seems to be happy!

    Happy Birthday to my twins Angela and Abigail.  The were born on
    November 1 three years ago.  Abigail, the queen of the house has grown
    into a longhaired 16 pound tub of fluff and fun (I shouldn't talk
    about the Queen like that!).  Angela, bless her heart, is shorthaired
    and hovering around the 8 pound mark (if she had a big breakfast). 
    Angela has a balance problem and has a tendency to totter around and
    fall but just gets up, shakes and dances off in another direction.
    
    Also, Happy Rescue Day (November 10) to Tawney who after eating a the
    back door for months, just walked in the kitchen three years ago.  When
    the kittens could leave their mother the week after Christmas, Tawney
    became their Nanny Cat.  We think she thought they were her Christmas
    present.  When she saw them her eyes seemed to light up and she looked
    up at us like "Oh, just what I've always wanted".  She has been their
    teacher, protector, Nanny and hot water bottle for three years and, as
    she seems about 6 years old now, will be with them many more years.

    	Its hard to believe that Navajo will be only a year old this
    Sunday. and I must say he has been a joy to have as a friend. When I'm
    bummed out for any reason he makes me smile and for pure laughter I try
    to figure out just why he runs from room to room with no objective I
    can see ! and everynight he makes me chuckle by attacking me while I
    climb into bed (he never attacks my wife, just me ?)....any why does he
    tip over his water bowl and then drink the water off the floor ? well
    If I knew these answers it just wouldn't be the same I guess, so I will
    live with these mysteries....Happy B'day Navajo ! and many many more to

    On March 11 The Princess Panther Jane & Spotted Cat Spingler both
    turned 10 paws old!
    
    I still find it hard to believe, these two who were tiny baby kittens
    when we pulled them off of death Row at the Humane Society, (On Mothers
    Day!) are now two grown ups. 1 Very refined lady of culture and
    breeding and one little rascal, who thinks her daddie is the finast
    human being on the face of the earth.  Spots worships her (human)
    daddie like a god!  (Being only the wife, that is pretty hard to
    compete with!)
    
    The Princess Panther Jane had a tuna & lamb baby food treat and of
    course new catnip mousie and a savings bond in a large denomination.
    
    Spots also enjoyed a tuna & lamb baby food treat and got to help Daddie
    in the computer room!
    
    Baby (2-4 years) Brother CinnyMan also enjoyed the party food and
    catnip mousies, then he went outside, (only one of the three that is
    allowed) and played in the mud!
    
    I would say that a good day was had by all!

    THUNDER TURNED 7 YEARS OLD TODAY !!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm shouting because she
    wasn't going to make to 2.....
    
    Black Thunder, alias the Wonder Kitty, is celebrating her seventh
    birthday today.  I am so happy !!!!  This is the kitty that had cancer
    and got her *ASSOCIATES* at Tufts University.  I was given a prognosis
    of her surviving until about two years old.  Of course, I immediately
    started cramming a life-time of love into the very short time I was
    going to have her.  But, Thunder has a mind of her own and has decided
    that the doctor's didn't know what they were doing and is still with us
    seven years later.  
    
    Now I have a totally spoiled, but extremely well-loved, healthy kitty.
    I'm so glad I have such a willful kitty.

    difference anyway!  And if it hadn't been for them (and old Merlin and
    his rambunctiousness Pretty Boy Floyd), I probably wouldn't have come
    back...

    It's now my considered opinion that it's not possible to have anything
    less than a *fabulous* vacation in Hawaii.
    
    And I called the cats three times, talking to them through the
    answering machine.  I carefully covered the machine because of past
    indications that they play with it, but when I got home the cover was
    on the floor beside the machine, covered with pawprints...  When I
    played back the messages they all came running and sat staring in
    bewildered fascination first at the machine and then at me- "daddy's
    voice is in the box but daddy's standing over there?!??!"
    
    There were cats at the two B&Bs we stayed at (in Volcano and upcountry
    Maui), so I wasn't starved for feline companionship.  I also brought
    along one of my many books of cat pictures to browse through every
    night before bed.

    Happy 3rd Birthday to the first-ever cat *I* ever owned, my not_so_little_
    anymore_PEANUT !!!!!  Thanks to his loving nature when we went to visit
    his mom and siblings 3 years ago, he reached my heart and I took him
    home, even tho' I'd had allergic reactions to cats in the past - he
    must have been truly meant for me, as I've never had a problem with him
    at all !!!!!!!!!!!   And since he came into my life, the cat population
    has multiplied so that he's now head-honcho (*only* male cat) of the
    other three lady-cats in the house (and boy, do they know HE'S boss !!).

    Happy birthday, Peanut !!!!!!!!!!!!!  Even tho' you grew to be a big
    brute and aren't a little peanut anymore, I love you, big guy !!!!!

    Happy Birthday to my PUMPKIN!  She's approximatly 15 years old this
    April, and getting frail looking.  Sweet little girl who really bosses my 
    other cats around.  I know her secret for doing it though.  She is 
    scared of them, and gets them before they can get her.

    Happy Fourth birthday to the Honorable Colonel Sebastian Moran, DROFFC.
    The Colonel began his birthday with his usual repast, followed by some
    "Mousie" treats. His baby brother wanted one and the Colonel generously
    let him have it. Rummy chewed and chewed and quite liked it. I wonder
    if Whiskers make any St.Bernard sized treats? If he chewed a mousie so
    much, a large one would keep him busy half the day!
    
    The Colonel is looking forward to turkey (his favorite) for dinner and
    perhaps a little catnip and a new toy. He said everyone is to take the
    day off in honor of this birthday. I didn't have the heart to tell him
    that Digital didn't accept his command authority.

    I wrote this for Bailey's 6th birthday in 1992.  I didn't know then that 
    she wouldn't make it past October of her 6th year.  Had she survived, 
    she would be 9 this year.  Rest in peace, Bailey.

    In fact, I do not know exactly the birthday of Smokey, for she was (as
    many others) an abandoned kitty picked up by me some 7 years ago in one
    early summer morning. The vet told me she would be appr. one year old -
    at that time. So we decided to 'put' her birthday on the 10th of june
    where my father and my wife have theirs: to have the family together.
    My dad went over to rainbow bridge since, to take our late dog Cicero
    over with him. I hope to have my othe two june-tenther long with me
    yet, until once all we meet over there.

    Wizard was diagnosed with kidney disease about a year and a half ago

    Carrie Nation turns 7 on August 8th.  Her officially assigned birthday
    is 8/8/88 and it's the only one of the 8 I can remember easily.  I
    can't believe she's that old.  
    
    It seems like only yesterday that I was walking around between 1am and 
    4am trying to figure out where the poor cat was that was making such a
    distressful meow.  I found her stuck between two fences that were up 
    against each other (dividing our apartment complex from the one next
    door).  I walked the length of the fences with her following me inside 
    them until I found a little space in the wood that she could crawl 
    through to get to me.  The rest is history.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE CAT WHO MADE ME A MOM
    
    Happy 4th Birthday to my litle calico kitty kat kid, Miss Sarah
    Vaughan.  She was born this month, and brought home from the Animal
    "Resucue" league by  me in November of 1991, my first ever cat.  I fell in 
    love immediately, and didn't know how I ever lived without her in my life.
     Sass is a dainty little  girl who likes to ride on my shoulder, and sleep 
    on top of me in bed.      
    
    About 2 years later, I brought home Count Basie as a playmate and
    companion for the Sass.  Count is a big lug who is very mellow and
    loves to snuggle.  Sassy has never really forgiven me for bringing home
    the Count, and has picked up some of his habits: drinking from the
    toilet bowl, sleeping on her back with her legs spread. Count has
    really been a good pal to her, keeping her occupied when I traveled,
    and providing me with a lot of snuggle time.  
    
    Something still was missing, however, and I was seriously considering
    more kitty kat kids, even though I am allergic, and am bothered by
    having 2 of them in the house and the Count's long fur.  Since I was in
    the "adoption mode" I followed up a tv broadcast of "Wednesday's Child"
    one evening (for those of you out of the area, this is part of the local 
    tv news which features human kids who are is state custody and are 
    available for adoption).  After attending a couple of months of training, 
    and having a home study done, and meeting many social workers, a 7 1/2 year
    old girl was placed in my house on Aug. 18th.
    
    So far Dominique and I are doing well as daughter and mother, and she
    has presented me with the greatest challenge of my life.  Of course,
    Miss Sarah Vaughan has not forgiven me for bringing her into the house,
    even though she is starting to give her a leg rub every now and then.  
    The Count looks a little chagrinned when he is picked up and carried
    around like a baby by my new daughter, but he doesn't complain or
    wriggle loose, as he does when I try and do the same.       
    
    All in all, the four of us are very busy and happy.  And to think it
    all started with a little peanut of a kitty who was born in September 
    and whom I saw one Saturday afternoon.

    My Silver Lining of Drangonlanse turns into an Adult Cat tomorrow.  He
    turns 3 kitty years tomorrow.  WOW !!!!  I can't believe I've had this
    little beauty that long.  It seems like just yesterday that I saw him
    at the cat show and fell in love.  This *BIG BOY* has given me so much
    love and has made me laugh so often that I can't picture him not being
    a part of my life.  Guess I'll have to go shopping tomorrow to find him

    Distinguished and Royal Order of Felines, First Class (with mouse
    cluster). Awarded to The Colonel by Colonel Bob and wife Steffi (sadly
    no longer having access to this conference. This was awarded to The
    Colonel when he caught his first mouse, quite a feat considering the
    Colonel's wobbliness.
    
    I'll take copies of the notes home, perhaps it will redeem me slightly
    for having brought in a new member of the company without previous
    permission from the commanding officer.

    Happy Birthday to Amelia Earhart who will be 10 on April 30th.  She's
    been my special girl for 10 wonderful years.
    
    Happy Birthday to Onyx O'Kitty who will be 5 on May 1st.  He's my first
    male kitty and he's been a joy to be owned by (in spite of his little
    territorial quirks).
    
    Last but not least my eternal love to Bailey (RIP) who would have been
    10 years old on April 19th.  She was the first kitty who ever owned
    me and the one responsible for turning me into a full fledged cat

    My boy Floyd is six years old today.  I can hardly believe it as it
    just seems like yesterday when we picked him up at six weeks old.
    
    I gave him salmon cat food in prawn jelly this morning - he turned his
    nose up and Elsa (little sister) got stuck in.
    
    I've got him some special treats and a new catnip mouse to give him
    tonight.

    I guess this is more or less Sweetie's sixteenth birthday, as the vet
    guesses this was the month he was born.  Hard to believe time has
    gone by so fast...  Here's for another sixteen years, cross
    fingers.  Happy birthday, wonderful Sweetie from your Mom.
    

    Mac's unofficial birthday is March 28th.  We think he's about
    4 years old.  I've had him 3 years and he was almost a year old
    (by the vet's estimate) when I got him.

    Happy Birthday to Big Boy Barkley.....it was seven years ago you 
    walked into our lives.  Literally...he opened the door and
    walked right in!!!   Hopefully we will have many more happy
    and healthy years ahead of us.
    
    Our estimate is that Barkley is somewhere between 12-14 years old..
    he's 18 pounds  and in January he was diagnosed with diatbetes.
    
    Barkley was our FIRST stray we rescued from our neighborhood...with
    many more following!!!

    I found her, skinny and full of fleas, at the laundromat when I was a
    junior in college in Albany, NY.  She is about 5 years old...and fat

    with me that long.  I hope that she'll be with me for a least another

    Onyx turns 6 today.  Yep, he's a Cinco de Mayo kitty.  Onyx was born
    under my patio when I lived in an apartment complex I affectionaly 
    refer to as "the dive".  He and his siblings were wild until they were
    about 8 weeks old.  Their mom was as wild as they come too.  
    
    The first time I tried to handle Onyx he bit through my finger.  Not 
    long afterwards I was able to catch him and his brother and sister and 
    use them to lure mom inside.  They were my very first feral taming
    experience.  I was quite successful at taming the kittens but mom
    resented me for quite a while afterwards.  However, she did form a
    strong bond with a friend of mine.
    
    Onyx is now a strong, long and lean, panther-like cat.  His brother 
    Bageera is a big stocky cat and he has just moved to Portland with his 
    human, Scot.  Their sister, Shadow, went to kitty heaven when she was 6 
    months old because her human decided to let her be an outside kitty in 
    a high traffic area.  Mom's whereabouts are unknown.  She lived in 
    Cupertino for quite a while before wondering off from her home with my 
    friend.  
    
    [Each of these cats' humans had given me an assurance the cats would 
     be indoor only when they adopted them.  Only Bageera's dad honored that 
     request.  But...I guess I'll leave that alone for now.]
