I am seriously considering buying a Magnavox CDB471. I can get it for
$170 (including shipping & handling) from Stereo Discounters Electronic
World. If I could trouble some of you to comment on either the machine,
the price, or the mail-order place I would very much appreciate it.

To provide a bit of background, I want to stay below $200 and am
therefore interested mostly in a machine that produces high fidelity
audio, good mechanical reliability, and a minimum of bells & whistles.

Thanks so much for any comments.

| I got one right before Christmas '87 for $199. It works fine and sounds fine. | |||||

| I replaced my old Technics SLP-7 with a Magnavox 473, which I believe
has the same electronics as the 471 but also has the remote control
(I couldn't find anyone who had the 471, and my previous unit had
died so I was in a hurry to get a replacement).

The sound difference is quite noticable, and definitely in favor of the
Maggie. The mechanical construction is OK, and is supposed to be
    better than the older models.

If I were you I would get it.

    ..................................................................

    Buy it!

    Here comes the reasoning...

I have bought thousands of dollars of stuff from SDEW. Not recently
mind you, but as recent as 5 years. But friends use them on my
recommendation. They are knowledgable, curtious, etc. Good stock,
fairly quick, etc. My only complaint is that if they don't have
something in stock and backorder you, they will charge your credit
card anyway. That drives me crazy when a store does that. So ask
them if they have one to send first, else call back in a few weeks
    and try again.

About the Mag, in your price range you can't be too chosey. Lucky
for you that the Mag 471 happens to be a pretty good sounding unit
for the money. If you read about the conference, you will see a
decided bias toward them in the cheap price class. You get fairly
good sound, they are not soundly built. So what... Use it for 3
or 4 years and throw it away. You can't beat the price.

As you may know, the Mags are really Phillips units, Phillips owning
Magnavox. Think of Mags as the low end Phillips units for the U.S.
market. Phillips co-invented CD with SONY.

You won't go wrong. Buy it...

    Regards, Jim

I just called the 800 number and they said they have closed down
their mail order division and will not be taking any more orders.
