    This seems like a reasonable place for this...
    
    Just a thanks to the many people in this notes file who have taken
    the time to recommend talk about, review, and recommend different
    artists.  
    
    I had NEVER heard of Amanda Mcbroom before I looked in here.  One
    day I was at a local CD store and listened to the Sheffield Lab
    Sampler - specifically the rendition of "Amanda".  I immediately
    fell in love, bought her "West of Oz" and "Growing Up in Hollywood
    Town" CDs.  Love them both.  I've played them for other people at
    work and they have all loved them too.
    
    I'm feverishly trying to find CDs by her backup group.  I've heard
    about "The Missing Linc" but CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE.
    
    I'll buy "Dreaming" as soon as I find it too.
    
    BTW:  I agree with the other comments about her style, voice, band,
    etc.  Fantastic.
    
    You people have pointed me at a lot of great music, and helped me
    avoid a lot of dogs!

    I tried to find her myself at Leachmere, can someone out there point
    me to the style of music. Is she in the Jazz section or Pop, easy

    Hi, I wrote the base note.  Amanda is not easy to find because she
    is not main stream.  I just know about her because most high end
    audio stores have her "Dreaming" CD as a system reference disc.
     She is really that good.  Beautiful voice, could sing opera.  Similar
    in style to Barbara S. but a slightly deeper voice and I feel more
    delicate.  She writes most of her own songs and indeed wrote "The
    Rose" I believe.  You won't probably find her in K-Mart type stores.
     I bought her albums from Take5 in New Haven, a high-end audio store.
     Call Waltham Camera/Stereo or Natural Sound and see if they have
    it.

    Amanda's two CDs from Sheffield Labs are re-releases of direct-to-disc
    (no tape) LPs.  This technique was Sheffield's reason for existing in
    the marketplace, a source of audiophile LPs.

    Lincoln Mayorga was associated with many of the Sheffield recordings.
    I suspect that he was a principal in the company.  "The Missing Linc"
    is undoubtably just a clever name for the band of studio musicians that
    Lincoln assembled for a couple of the Sheffield recordings.

    If you liked Amanda's backup, look for other Mayorga recordings on the
    Sheffield label.

    Has anyone found "Dreamin'" in the Boston area?
    
    I just bought her West of Oz and Growing Up in Hollywood disks
    this past weekend (at Video Revolution in Concord, MA. center).
    
    I've called around looking for Dreamin', but nobody has heard of
    her, never mind that disk.
    
    By the way, I agree, her voice is wonderful.

    I bought Dreaming last week in Colorado Springs (Sound Warehouse
    has about 6 copies). Since then I've bought Growing Up in Hollywood
    Town. Although I like both disks, I *really* like Dreaming. Excellent
    voice, though I'd like to see her pull all the strings and hit the
    really high notes sometime.

    I've checked a half dozen different CD places around Minneapolis for
    both the Dreaming and/or Lincoln Mayorca's "Missing Link" CDs.  No
    luck. Today I finally got the yellow pages and called EVERY STINKING
    RECORD STORE IN THIS CITY.  Nobody has either disc.  A few had the West
    of Oz and Growing up in Hollywood Town, but noone had the two I want. 
    
    If I can find an address I'm gonna call SHEFFIELD LAB directly!

    Don't call Sheffield looking for Dreaming. That recording is on
    the Gecko Records label.
    
    Sound Warehouse here in Colorado Springs still has about 6 copies.

    I bought West of OZ on Saturday and after two listens I've come
    to the conclusion it's not for me.  First letter or phone call it's
    your for $12.

    About 2 months ago I bought a copy of the album (not the CD) from
    Natural Sound in Framingham.  They had about 5-6 copies in stock.

    I'm certainly no expert at describing musical style, but here goes:
    
    She's a combination of folk/ballad/torch singer with some jazz thrown
    in.  In addition, her backup band, headed by Lincoln Mayorca does a
    couple jazz type cuts on her two earlier CDs.  They're cut of "Dock
    of A Bay", the old Otis Redding tune is excellent.
    
    She has a voice that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand
    up on songs like "Amanda," "Dorothy," or "Gossamer".  

    I would compare her to Maureen McGovern or Bonnie Koloc.

    I am struggling to find the right description of Amanda's voice
    and style.  First, throw out all rock styles, she is far from that.
     Perhaps this: imagine what Judy Collins would sound like if she
    started 20 years later, didn't do folk but more main stream, was
    Irish and had a backup group.....Yes, that's it....

    Comparing Amanda McBroom to Kate Bush is like comparing a nice roast
    beef with a box of Tobler chocolate. Both are terrific, but completely
    different. It depends on your mood.

    More of a trivial question than about her releases .......
    
    Does anyone know where Amanda was born or grew up?  If she is the
    artist that wrote 'The Rose', I remember seeing her on 'The Johnny
    Carson Show' when the movie ('The Rose') was released.  That night,
    she sang (if it was her) a song about a time when she was young
    growing up in a mexican border town and the thrill of being in love.
    It was very descriptive.
    
    A friend says she's from Ireland.  If that's so, then I'm thinking
    of the wrong person.  What I remember from 'The JC Show' is that
    she said she grew up in Mission, Texas; about four miles from my
    hometown.
    
    If this is totally off-the-wall, feel free to delete it.  My memory
    cells are not what they used to be ......

    I don't know where she was born, etc, but she is the one who wrote
    "The Rose".  She has it recorded on her CD "Growing up in Hollywood
    Town".

    "The Rose" is also on the Dreaming album. How to you know that she
    wrote it? I looked at the credits in the liner notes and the only
    information I saw there (on the Dreaming liner notes) was the
    publisher, and it was not her usual publisher (McBroom Music).

    Well I coulda helped you about 3 weeks ago. Up until then Sound
    Warehouse in Colorado Springs had about 5-6 copies but they have
    mysteriously dissapeared (they even removed the Amanda McBroom
    "divider" from the bins). If I see copies here anywhere else I'll
    be glad to let you know.

    They're probably everywhere, considering the eclectic tastes of

    It says on GROWING UP IN HOLLYWOOD TOWN that she wrote "The Rose".
    
    Gee, while I'm here in the Springs, I should look for DREAMING,
    since I haven't found it in Boston.

    out of your way to get one CD this year, get this one....
    
    It's really that good.  I have all her Shefield LP's and this beats
    them hands down.  If you loved those, you will not believe Dreaming...

    Gotta agree with this. This disk has to be one of my top 3 favorite
    disks to listen to.
    
    How many albums does she have on Sheffield? Is it just "Growing
    Up in Hollywood Town" and "West of Oz", or are there others? 

    I picked up a copy of DREAMING (finally!) a couple of weeks ago.
    It's certainly as good as her others, but I certainly don't
    think that it's particularly better. 
    
    Jack, as far as I know, there's only the two others. I think .26
    got carried away with the "all".
