    It's already out...got it 2 weeks ago. However, my copy was $4.99.
    Still not a bad price for it. It's got 47+ minutes, 17 songs, which
    are examples of their new 9000 Series. There's 3-4 Supremes, 1 Four
    Tops, 1 Gladys Knight & the Pips (unreleased ??), the long version
    of the Temps' "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." 
    
    It didn't come in a diamond case, but a cardboard one with a plastic
    inside to hold the disc. The sound, as has been the story on all
    the Motown re-issues, is very good to excellent. I picked it up,
    because it's sure to be a collectors' item. 
    
    This preview to the 9000 series is their budget line, which has
    already taken off in California. They are anything from single albums
    of 30-34 minutes to Anthologies and Double albums ranging from 45-72
    minutes. Their price - $9.99. Motown has also picked up stuff from
    the vaults of VEE-JAY and JAMIE records and will be re-issueing
    stuff from them in this lo-cost series. If you like late 50's-mid
    60's soul and don't yet own a disc player....now's the time !!

     Peter, even if Lechmere is taking a little advantage of us ($5.99
    versus $3.95), the bottom line is that this is still the cheapest
    price we've ever seen for a "new" CD. Remember paying $14.98 to
    $17.99 not so very long ago?
    
     As Al pointed out, the Motown quality has been very good. I, for
    one, intend to purchase this and other discs in the 9000 series.
    I certainly hope this pricing policy on reissues catches on with
    all companies (except CBS - I'm boycotting 'em until they drop their
    brain damaged CopyGuard scheme).

    Well, *I'm* annoyed at Motown, for other reasons. So far, the
    only disc of theirs I've bought is the Rare Earth twofer. What
    irritated me is that they used the shorter, 45 version of "I
    Know I'm Losing You" instead of the longer album version so that
    they could fit the two albums on one CD. What's worse, in my
    opinion, is that they don't mention this "adjustment" anywhere
    in the packaging.

    Jerry, What's the total time of the Rare Earth 2fer ??  I've seen
    other Motown "sampler"/various artists discs and noticed that the
    "Rare Earth" stuff is the short version. Also, the understanding
    that I have is that the 9000 series stuff, even the re-issues of
    the original re-issues (just to change the original series #'s to
    9XXX) will be the original lp's, meaning that there should be no
    "cut" songs.
    
    In defense of Motown, I think we can say that they've made other
    labels look at their pricing policies and have also proven that
    there's money in a record company opening their vaults and sensibly
    re-issuing their complete libraries.
    
    It's pretty gutsy to put 17 charted hits on a disc with a total time
    of 65 minutes - with one of the tunes being the original 6:58 release,
    then selling it for $3.99-4.99. By the way, when you open the jewel
    box on any of the 9000 series discs, there's a capsule history of
    the compact disc AND a full catalog of what's available from MOTOWN
    along with a mailing address to order them from. I'd say that in
    most instances, they've got their act together.
    
    If only Columbia/RCA/London/EMI-America/Capitol etc., would do the
    same !!!!

on network TV not long ago and didn't even give Rare Earth any credit.

    Actually, it makes sense, as Rare Earth were their own corporation
    and all Motown did was distribute their records for them. This may
    answer for their absence from the Anniversary Show.

    I got mine today at Lechmere, $5.99 also.
    
    Saw it at Musicland in the Natick Mall for $6.49.....

    You might have to ask for this gem since it is not in a jewel case
    or a 12" box, so Musicland had it behind the counter...if I hadn't
    been looking for it, I wouldn't have seen it.
    
    Amazing that Motown and MCA (their distributor) have gotten their
    CD act together because both have been long notorious for really
    bad vinyl.
    
    One caveat:  Inside the cover is a list of the entire 9000 series.
    Some are exisiting releases priced down ("Command Performance" series)
    while others are single albums that are also available on "twofer"
    CDs with a second at regular ($15) price. Be careful not to get
    burned on price.
                      
    The real 9000 series appear to be in jewel boxes.
