Can anyone compare the Nakamichi OMS-3 with the Denon DCD-1700? I
haven't seen the 1700 mentioned in these notes. The Denon clearly has
more features (i.e. buttons) and the Nakamichi seems to be slow when
asked to seek a particular track, but I am more interested in sound
quality differences.
To me, the Nakamichi sounds fuller in the mid-range and the Denon
sounds kind of bright. I listened to a variety of musical styles and
compared them through Nakamichi headphones (I am not sure if that had
any bearing on the validity of the test).
Any opinions on these two comparably priced players? Are there any
serious drawbacks to either? Any others I should listen to in this
price range ($500 < price < $1000)?

If I were looking in that price range, I would include the Mission
PCM 7000 and the Sonographe CD1. The Denon DCD 1500 has also been
highly recommended. I have not heard the Denon, but in a brief
listenening comparison, I found that the PCM 7000 handled complex
musical passages more clearly than anything I have heard. With
other units, these complex passages seemed to blend together into
one homogenous sound. The 7000 kept each instrument seperate and
distinct.
