| If you can find them there are a number of good Sibelius recordings
on BIS. I don't have my Schwann handy to see what recordings of
the Violin Concerto are available.

| I really like my Ashkenazy recording of Sibelius' 6th on London.
I have the LP but it is also on CD. It comes with the 3rd.

| I found some titles in an italian "Guide to CDs" published
in 1986.
About the violin concerto, the guide recommends the two
ANGEL recordings, even if they are not the "optimum".
The symphinies have been published by BIS and CHANDOS.
The BIS edition is conducted by Neeme Jarvi, with the
Gothenburg Symphony. The numbers:
n.1 (+ Finland) BIS CD221
n.2 (+ Romance Op.42) BIS CD252
n.3 (+ King Christian) BIS CD228
n.4 (+ Canzonetta Op.62) BIS CD263
n.5 (+ Karelia) BIS CD222
n.6 (+ Pelleas et Melisande) BIS CD237
(Strange: the n.7 is missing, but I think now it is available)
The CHANDOS edition is conducted by Alexander Gibson, with
the Scottish National. The numbers:

n.4-5 CHANDOS 8388
Then Ashkenazy conducts the n.4-5-6-7 on Decca CDs, and other
items are available under various labels, but they are not
well considered. The author of the guide thinks all these three
editions are good, and perhaps leans towards the Jarvi's one.
None of these CDs is in my collection, so I can't give my
personal opinion.
From the technical point of view, I don't know BIS, because it
is difficult to find in Italy (but it seems very good), while
CHANDOS is excellent, expecially in reproducing the great
orchestra.
CHANDOS offers other titles, with Gibson and the Scottish
National again. They are
4 Legends Op.22 CHANDOS 8394
and the complete recording of the symphonic poems in 2 CDs
(CHANDOS 8395/6). The guide judges these 3 CDs "precious".

The BIS recordings can definitely be recommended. Granted, the
Gothenburg orchestra is not the BSO, but they are very professional
and Neeme J�rvi has an excellent feeling for Sibelius' music.
As far as I know, BIS hasn't yet published a recording of the
Violin Concerto, but I suppose one will appear eventually.
BIS is, or was, essentially a one-man company, started by Robert
von Bahr here in Stockholm some years ago. They started in a small
scale, using local musicians and simple equipment - the first LPs
were recorded using only a ReVox A77 tape recorder and two Neumann
microphones!
Being recorded here, the BIS CDs have the advantage of being much
less expensive than others. I know that they may be hard to find
outside of Scandinavia, mainly because of smaller scale
manufacturing, but Mr. von Bahr & Co. are aiming towards
increased exportation.
