604.0. "Michel Petrucciani" by STAR::ARANDA (Rem Aranda (DTN) 381-1238 MS:ZK01-3/J33) Mon Jan 12 1987 21:21
Any Michel Petrucciani fans out there? Petrucciani is a french-born
pianist (now living in New York) who might well be the best new
Jazz piano player around (he's 24 years old). His vigorous but
disciplined style is reminiscent of Oscar Peterson to me.

I've grown very fond of a Blue Note DDD of his, "Pianism" (Blue
Note CDP 7 46295 2), with Palle Danielsson (bass) and Eliot Zigmund
(drums) (collectively, The Michel Petrucciani Trio), that contains
    the following selections:

The Prayer (M. Petrucciani)	Our Tune (M. Petrucciani)
Face's Face (M. Petrucciani)	Night and Day (C. Porter)
Here's That Rainy Day (J. Van Heusen)
    	Regina (M. Petrucciani)

Regina was written for Elis Regina, mentioned in an earlier note
of mine regarding Brazilian jazz. Funny thing, it sort of sounds
like her music, in the way that Oscar Peterson's "A Jazz Portrait
of Frank Sinatra" sounds like Sinatra.

The music's great, the recording fine, and the liner notes complete
and amusing. They include the history of Petrucciani's seven foot
Steinway B grand (used for recording the session)- it seems that
a physician who "found" Rashneesh decided to sell it along with
all his many wordly posessions. The enlightened doc placed an ad
in the paper along the lines of "Steinway B for sale, cheap", and
after a big drive Petrucciani acquired his most prized possession.
Gives you faith that there's some good in everything.

    -Rem
