    David Sanborn has a couple of CD's released. You might also like
    to try Pat Metheny Albums (which one's?) for Charlie Haden. Also,
    Spyro Gyra and Weather Report do get a little Saxxy at times.

    I DON'T recommend Pat Metheny "Song X" CD.  The disk took only two
    days to record and contain a bunch on seemingly random jazz.  I
    was VERY disappointed.  I have heard that this was one of his more
    unusual recordings and not representative of his work.  I'd like to
    get up the nerve to try another one of his CDs.
    
    I did like Spyro Gyro "Break Out" CD, although it can be argued
    that it sound like elevator music.
    
    Steve Kahn, who played with Billy Joel, is another artist that I
    would like to investigate

    If you wish to discuss Steve Khan at length we'll start another
    note.  But briefly, he is a versatile guitarist whose LP's range
    from guitar covers of Thelonius Monk, to crisp jazz funk.  If you
    see him on CD, let me know.  I'd be VERY happy to find him.

    Off the top of my head in the world of Jazz Sax
    	(in no particular order):
    
    	Paul Desmond:
    	    What a talent he was.  You'll mostly find him with the
    	    Dave Brubeck quartet.  His most famous song is "Tave Five"
    	    which is on "Time Out".  A flawless set.  BTW, "Dave Brubeck,
    	    The Quartet" on LRC (Denon) is terrible.  Don't waste your
    	    money.
    
    	    Also, though Paul Desmond died a while back, Dave Brubeck
    	    always has exceptional sax or clarinet in his quartet.
    	    Bill Smith is playing clarinet for the quartet on some recent
    	    Concord Jazz discs.  Try "Concord on a Summer Night" for a
    	    wonderful version of "Take Five" and "For Iola" for a melting
    	    "Summer Song".
    
    	Stan Getz:
    	    What can you say?  Don't shy away from the AAD discs on
    	    Verve.  "Jazz Samba" and "Jazz Samba Encore" are excellent
    	    latin jazz recordings of the early sixties.  "Sweet	Rain"
    	    was recorded in the mid-sixties.  Also, the new recordings
    	    by Getz for Concord are also wonderful.  Awful awful awful
    	    is "Stan Getz with European Friends" on LRC (Denon).  Avoid it.
    	    Sound is attrocious and performance is worse.
    
        Gerry Mulligan
    	    A few very good discs out there.  Recent stuff on Concord
    	    is excellent.  LRC (Denon) also has a disc.  Haven't had
    	    the funds to throw away.  Anyone try it and get disappointed?

    	David Sanborn:
    	    I've seen several of his discs out, but the one I have listened
    	    to is with Bob James "Double Vision".  Smooth listening.
    
        Stanley Turrentine
    	    A little bit of his vast stuff on CD.  Go for it.

        Grover Washington Jr.
    	    Would you believe he once recorded on the Motown label?
    	    There are a couple "two for one" cds out of his early
    	    albums.  Good value.  (Actually, he's good value at one
    	    record/CD.)
    
    
    
    And, always always look at the labels.  If you hear anything you
    really like on one quartet, look for the same performer solo.
    
    Simple examples:
    	You love the sax on "Humble People" by Flora Purim and Airto
    	and what do you know, David Sanborn is playing sax for that
    	recording.
    
    	You love Getz on Sweet Rain, but you keep saying to yourself
    	"I love that Bass and Piano!".  Well, Ron Carter and Chick Corea,
    	both when they were quite young.
    
    Well, enough for now.  I think that'll get you started (and make
    you richer in soul but poorer in wallet).  And you'll find lot's more
    that I'll be red faced about forgetting.

    Tom Scott has a new DDD recorded CD out. Don't remember the name
    but I'm kicking myself that I haven't gotten it yet. Its recorded
    live no mixing, but it looks like its not a typical Scott album.
    Should be worth checking out. Other CD's that come to mind are
    Wayne Shorter's new one Atlantis and George Howard has finally
    released a CD, don't remember the name . Its a little mellow but
    very nice soprano sax. All are available at Strawberry's in Leominster
    around here.

    	Ronnie Laws, in my opinion, is very good. I really enjoyed
    	his Solid Ground album. However, I haven't seen anything
    	of his on CD. If anyone has one of those Green Master
    	Catalogs (or whatever they are called), I'd appreciate any
    	numbers of his, that I might be able to special order by.

    I've been looking a while for Ronnie Laws on CD but have not seen
    what I am looking for yet. I'm interested in finding Pressure
    Sensitive, which has one of my favorites "Always There", but havn't
    seen it yet. If anyone sees this please let me know.

    Ronnie Laws seemed to have disappeared from the music scene for
    quite a while - but he has a new album out (recorded in '86) that
    I've seen on CD at Lechmere's in Framingham and Nashua, and I think
    I saw it at Newbury Comics too. I can't remember the title but it
    has something to do with mirrors - the cover artwork shows mirror
    images of him looking at each other. I'd love to have copies of
    'Pressure Sensitive' and 'Fever' if I could find them on CD...

	The Green CD Catalog (Jan/Feb) does not list any Ronnie Laws,
	for what it's worth.

	.6 has several excellent suggestions. But don't forget Sonny
	Rollins!
	
	re .2: "Song X" isn't so bad if you listen with an open mind.
	It's not typical of Pat Metheny's disks because it really was
	an Ornette Coleman album (his songs and style) which Metheny
	played on - they put Metheny's name first on the cover to help
	sell it.

    How about FOUR great sax soloists for the price of one? Try
    the World Saxophone Quartet Plays Ellington, on Nonesuch.
    
    Their other CDs: Live in Zurich, Revue, and Steppin' With the W.S.Q.,
    all on Black Saint.
    
    The W.S.Q. are Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake on alto and soprano,
    David Murray on tenor, and Hamiet Bluiett on baritone. Various 
    members have also made solo recordings.

    

    I got an excelent disk for christmas by/titled KENNY G.  I have never 
    heard of him and can't find anything else of his in the seacoast, but
    would buy another disk of his in a minute!  Almost all of the songs
    on this R&B/Jazz recording feature Kenny's Sax.
    
    Hearing this makes me wish I'd kept taking lessons....

    I picked World Saxophone Quartet plays Ellington.  I was most
    dissppointed.  Not for the CD quality or the quality of the recording
    but rather for the content.  The arrangements of the music are
    very good but I can't help but get the feeling that each piece is
    playing a different song sometimes.
    
    There are two tracks of "Take the A Train," one of my favorite songs
    and, I think, best done by an album with the Duke and the Count
    together.  On the WSQ version, the second "A Train" track starts
    relly cool with a tenor playing the familiar riff we all know, then
    the baritone starts in, almost like a round.  Then major chaos.
    
    Since I couldn't find the NEW David Sanborn album, I picked up 
    "Bob James - All Around the Town."  This is a double album set on
    a CD, 72min 38sec.  Not as much Sax as I would have liked but very
    enjoyable listening music.

    	I'd strongly recommend Gerry Mulligan - "Little Big Horn".
    That's one of my favorite CDs.  He plays Baritone sax and learned
    jazz from the likes of Dizzy Galespi (sp.).

        For people seeking the World Saxophone Quartet (in the "Greater?  
    Maynard Area), Lechmere's in Framingham had three different CDs by 
    these folks on Friday night, Jan. 30th.  If you look for them, be 
    persistant as they were scattered under all different headings from 
    jazz to classical.

    
    
    My favorites.............two all time classics
    
    John Coltrane   "A Love Supreme"  on IMPULSE
    
    Oliver Nelson   "Blues and the Abstract Truth"  again on IMPULSE
    
    For the adventurous, try any disk by Jan Gabarek on ECM.

    Yes, John Coltrane "A Love Supreme" is a good disc.  Note that this
    disc was recorded in 1964.  Seems to have a bit more hiss that it
    should, but the performance is wonderful.  Looking forward to being
    able to budget more bucks for more Coltrane, and would like any
    recomendations of other good discs.  Be warned, Coltrane goes in
    some interesting directions that some might find "hectic".  This
    recording is music, not background.
                                       
    
    Another sax master, Sonny Rollins is excellent on "Sunny Days Starry
    Nights" on Milestone (Fantasy), recorded in 1984.  Generally, I find
    most of the sessions that Lucille Rollins has been involved with to
    be consistently good.

    I've never considered my self a saxophone lover, but I really enjoy
    listening to John Klemmer's "Touch".  I don't know if it's available
    on CD.  I have also heard his album "Cry: Solo Saxophone".  I only
    heard it once and never had the desire to hear it again.
    

I have several John Klemmer on LP and have one CD - Touch.  I like his
mello style and if you want to unwind he's great to listen to.  One of
my favorites on long plane rides

    	was one, and the other seems to be sort of a greatest hits
    	type. It's called Ronnie Laws - Classic Masters. It includes:

    Thank you, thank you, thank you....I bought the Kenny G Duotones
    based on your recommendation....I LOVE IT!!!!  There is not one
    song on there I don't like.  I have also recommended to several
    friends and all have had the same reaction. 
    
    FYI...Kenny G is playing at the Opera House in Boston on December
    2nd.  I bought tickets last night....
