    Yeah, Communique is pretty good. The reason it is underated is because
    most people (myself included) wanted to be blown away by it like
    the first one. It was a long time before I really listened to the
    whole musical thing that Mark was putting together. Personally
    I like "Making Movies" more than Communique. For the sound quality,
    Brothers in arms takes the cake hands down, but for musical quality,
    I don't feel it's thier best.

    What about the double live (digital) Alchemy album by Dire Straits.
    Any good?

    Alchemy is ok, not great.  Didn't think it was digital.

    I must admit I'm a big Mark Knopfer fan and listen to dire straits
    alot. I tend to listen for certain things in thier songs that most
    people could care less about.(musical themes,new guitar styles,new
    arangments of the rhythm  guitar..ect) Alchemy is a good album to
    me as they change some of the songs around and play with arangments
    (eg.. tunnel of love). I don't have the CD yet but I dont think
    it was digitally recorded. If you like the straits sound I think
    you will find Alchemy OK.

          I think it's great,but then I'm biased,it was the first CD
         I bought..Sultans of swing is really good,'specially when
          played LOUD..ditto Private Investigations..

    I've never heard the EP Twistin By the Pool. Have You ? Have you
    or anybody out there seen it around lately? Any comments on Knopfler's
    work on Bob Dylan's Slow Train Comming?

    Twistin by the pool is pretty neat stuff.  Especially good dance
    music.  All four (4!) songs are good.

    I have the Brothers in Arms CD and the Making Movies one too.
    The BIA CD is much better audio-wise, but I think their Making Movies
    album is the best they've ever done.  It's great!!  If you don't
    have it, I highly recommend it.  Howe many other albums have Dire
    Straits put out on CD??  Do they all have good fidelity?  (Especially
    "Love Over Gold" I'm thinking of buying it)
    

	I think all of the LP's (but not "Twisting By the Pool") are
	on CD, maybe "Communique" isn't. The sound on "Love over Gold"
	is very good. Of course, "Making Movies" is their best album
	musically.

All of the albums are on CD -- even comunique (sp?).  [Twisting
by the pool is an EP (not an album) and is not available on CD
-- no big loss, the sound quality of the EP is verrrrrry good.]

    The Local Hero soundtrack by Mark Knopfler, which has apparently
    been available on CD in the UK for a while now, is now in the US.
    I got mine at Tower in Boston. This is a US release, not an import.
    I've been looking for this for a while to replace my vinyl copy,
    and was just about to start investigating how to import it.
    It's Warner Brothers 9 23827-2.

    Another soundtrack available on Warner Brothers is "The Princess
    Bride".

    Just for your info,I bought a domestic copy of "Local Hero" over 
    two years ago, so it has been out for a while. Sounds great, though,
    doesn't it!

    Well, it seems as if Mark & Co. have snuck one in on all of us.
    I was wandering through Tower last nite (I often do this at odd
    hours) and noticed a D.S. disc titled "Money For Nothing," which
    appears to be a greatest "hits" compilation. What made me wonder
    why it even exists was, it was priced at $17.99 and only has 12
    tunes on it. I didn't count the time of the disc, but a scan of
    titles/times seemed to add up to much less than 70 minutes (or even
    60 for that matter). Since D.S. have in effect broken up, this
    smacks of a grab the money & run scheme either by WB or the group
    or both.
    
    It features "Sultans of Swing," "Money For Nothing," "Brothers in
    Arms," and a couple of "live" previously unreleased recordings.
    Geez, with 3 tunes alone from the BinA CD which was one of the largest
    selling CD's of all time, how many of these do they expect to sell
    for $17+ ??
    
    I suppose that the lp version even features more tracks than the
    CD (as does the Paul Simon compilation (-1)). WB is really losing
    credibility behind this type of piracy. I see what they're doing,
    I'm just not sure why. It's obvious that as a "major" they're bent
    on greed, but lately, they've taken some huge liberties with the
    CD buying public. It's as if they "want" people to return to vinyl.
    Oh well, just a "buyer beware" note about this CD, in case you haven't
    run across it yet.

    As we enter into the old x-mas retail frenzy it is not uncommon
    for record companies to release "Greatest Hits" packages. For
    the most part these are intended for the casual listener who,
    while he may enjoy "Dire Straits", does not want to purchase the
    entire catalogue. What can be frustrating is when they include
    the stray b-side or live track to seduce those fans looking for
    new material. I say if they want to generate revenue by releasing
    this type of material they should approach it like R.E.M and
    the WHO, both of whom released full albums of unreleased music.
    Don't blame the band for these "Greatest Hits" albums, they
    have their audiences and more often than not they are products
    of the industry marketing types not the artists.

I disagree, the Disk was priced the same as any other disk (in France) 
ie about 110FF, �11 or $17.  But on this side of the pond thats what 
we expect to pay.  Maybe its not been released in the States yet and 
you saw an import?

As for the disk I LOVE it.   I generally find there are one or two 
tracks I really like on each of the Dire Straits albums, but this 
one....

In general I hate these greatest hits compilations, but this must be 
the exception that proves the rule.

    I saw this disk this weekend in Record Bar for their normally high
    price.  It was the same price as any other CD.  I have not checked at
    my local CD haunts, though.  
    
    Regarding the LP versus the CD.  The CD has an additional live track
    that the LP version does not.  The name escapes me at the moment.

    	I bought the CD "MONEY FOR NOTHING" and that is almost what
    I got. Here I was thinking that I was getting the full versions
    as on the the regular albums and what did I get,.. 45 versions!?
    I thought I would have everything on one CD but I will have to keep
    both CDs. I think Sultons Of Swing is great, so that is what prompted
    me to get that CD instead of the first album. 
    	Oh well live and learn. Sounds like a rip off to me as well.

    Unfortunately, the first album on CD also contains the single (45 RPM)
    version of "Sultans Of Swing" (with the early fade-out).  (I have no
    idea why they did this, but I suppose it's the same reason why the ELO
    CD _Face_The_Music_ is missing the intro to the song "Fire On High".)
    I have yet to find the full-length version of "Sultans Of Swing" on CD.
    Does anybody know if the CDV (CD-Video) of "Sultans Of Swing" contains
    the full-length audio track?

    I did read that "Money For Nothing" is a contractual obligation album,
    hence that lack of support by the band members etc.

      I'm unimpressed with the greatest hits album as well, I recommend
    getting Dire Straits, Making Movies, and Brothers In Arms and
    forgetting about the greatest hits one (unless you're a die-hard,
    then you need them all of course).

    Yes.  I bought the CD about two years ago and immediately noticed
    the problem.  The climax of the song (i.e., the tail end of the guitar
    solo at the very end) is missing on CD.  The song fades out too early!
    I assume this was the single version.  I know it wasn't the album
    version because my original LP has the longer version of the song with
    the ending intact.  The difference is a matter of seconds, but those
    seconds are "critical" in my opinion.

    Not only are those seconds "critical," but it's beyond me why a
    record/CD company would even shorten a song for any reason - especially
    in this format. 
    
    RCA/Grunt does the same thing in the Jefferson Starship's GH package.
    They put the "45" versions on the lp, and have just done the same
    thing to the CD, where it doubtless would've been little trouble
    to use the longer mixes for at least the CD issue. Beats the heck
    out of me who strategizes this sort of thing.

    A quote in "Q" magazine puts the reasoning as being "to fit on one CD".
    
    They also left out one verse of "Money for Nothing".

    I noticed that Warner's just dumped out a bunch of 5" CDV's of
    Dire Straits. One from DIRE STRAITS, one from MONEY FOR NOTHING,
    two from BROTHERS IN ARMS, and one from the TWISTING BY THE POOL
    EP.
