    Well, he then compounded his error by trying nail polish remover,
    which probably started to disolve the plastic.  He played the damaged
    disk at about 8:00 this morning.  It's a loss.  He is now auctioning
    it off to the highest bidder.
    

    At about 9:00 he was calling the store that lent the disk to tell
    them the bad news.  He told them it never came...  they said they
    would send another.
    
    Playing CDs on radio is about biggest hype I've heard lately.  Why
    else would one use CD on a radio station compressed down to about
    a 15db dynamic range.  Its not likely the CD will survive any better
    than LPs.
    
    The next best hype is next door to BCN.  Whoever bought WHTT announces
    the frequency as 103.(?) DIGITAL.  Being in the computer biz, we
    can't fault them too much for using buzzwords I guess.

    This morning, Chuck announced that they'd managed to salvage the
    disc with judicious use of toothpaste.  He then proceeded to play
    "Come Together" and it started skipping.  Sigh.  BTW, I'd wonder
    if perhaps he wrote it on the label side - that could do even more
    damage.
    
    As for playing CDs on radio, I disagree that it's hype.  I can
    certainly hear the difference, ESPECIALLY in the lack of pops,
    scratches, clicks, etc., but also in a crisper high-end.  Remember
    that radio station albums tend to get crudded up very quickly (I
    used to work in one).  CDs are WONDERFUL for radio, if only for
    their compactness, convenience and durability.

I suspect CDs will also find their way into automated radio stations with
tape only providing the announcements and control information.

    I have heard some CD play on the air that sounded better than whatever
    it is they usually play from (tape/phono).
    
    That appears to be a function of 1) how bad the analog play stuff
    is to begin with and 2) the mixer/limiter in use.
    
    WGBH plays both CD and phono. I find very little difference in sound
    quality (both quite good) which says they have a very good phono
    playback system and stay out of the limiter (lower average modulation
    levels) along with super transmitting equipment.
    
    WSSH plays both as well and I find very little difference.  Both
    are compressed (limited maybe) and go thru mediocre transmitting
    gear.  If I didnt like the DJ's I wouldnt listen at all.
    
    WOTB (jazz from Newport) also plays both and the CD is clearly better
    to the ear than their phono set-up (which is probably 20 years out
    of date).
    
    These arent the best and worst (or my most/least favorites) just
    examples.

	Let me get this straight, he had a borrowed CD copy of "Abbey Road"
from some store in Boston, he ruins it with a laundry pen, lies to the store
about ruining it, but the store isn't real upset 'cause they'll just send
him ANOTHER (Abbey Road)? (Meanwhile I hear there are ~200 of these things
around, people in New York are paying $250 apiece to lucky folks who have one
(or two), and I can't even get one!)
	Maybe I missed something. IS THE DROUGHT OVER????
Can I get one at my local strawberries for $11.99

    Charles is a dork, anyway. ( I know, i used to be his production
    assistant in 1973, before I went off to become a DJ).

    Frankly, the whole thing sounds suspiciously like some fantasy CL
    cooked up to entertain his listeners.  For one thing, even he could
    hardly be stupid enough to write on a CD with a laundry marking
    pen.  Well, maybe he could.  Also, doesn't it seem likely that the
    people at the store which donated/loaned the copy of "Abbey Road"
    listen to WBCN?  If so, wouldn't they know the whole (fictitious)
    story? Finally,  I remember combing stores for months before I found
    even one copy of "Abbey Road".  I doubt very much that anyone who
    has a copy would lend/donate it, particularly to someone as asinine
    as Charles Laquidera.

    It is true that a store (BCD, I thought) gave a copy of Abbey Road
    to WBCN (not specifically to Charles).  Yes, Charles WOULD be 
    ignorant enough (different from stupid) to write on the disc with
    a marker - after all, someone in this very conference did the same
    thing.  However, I think his bit about pretending that the disc
    was lost was just a gag.
    
    In any event, he really did SOMETHING to the disc as it doesn't
    play properly anymore.

    As far as I know, ABBEY ROAD was only available in the US for a
    very limited time as a Japanese import; somewhere somebody got an
    injunction to stop distribution in the US. 
    
    Does anyone in Europe or Japan have a way of acquiring Beatle CDs?
    I'd be willing to pay almost any price in any currency to acquire
    them.
    

I will be in Germany next week (personal vacation) and will look for 
some copies. If I can find any I will send a reply back to you, on how
much and where to ship them.

    The production of Abbey Road was stopped in Japan.  In May '85,
    you could find it in any record store in Tokyo.  In March '86,
    not a single copy could be found.

I've been writing my name on CD's now since the first day I started collect-
ing.  I use indelible ink markers (usually those with very fine tips) and
write on the label side as close to the outside edge as possible.  I have had
no trouble doing this! ...all the music plays nicely.

Fingernail polish might work to remove such writing (I once used aftershave to
remove someone's writing on an office porcelain board).  I'd be VERY careful,
though, as I think the plastic on the label side is the thinner layer and
might easily damage.  Actually, I always try to write on the existing printed
material (the label itself) as much as possible...this provides more
protection!

    Indelible ink on the INNER part (that part that isn't even metallized
    on some CD's works fine.  All mine are so labeled.
    

    The disk was already ruined. Whose idea was it to put "Shabby Road"
    on CD?

    I recently returned from a business trip to Tokyo.  I stopped at
    a couple of the larger stores on the weekend and could not find Abbey
    Road or any other Beatles disc (except for a few compliations).
