| | There are several Moody Blues CDs. I have all but one of them,
and I recently bought "The Other Side of Life", their newest. I
like it quite a bit, especially "Your Wildest Dreams", and very
especially the opening of that number. It is ADD.

I also have tickets for the GREAT WOOD and enough of that.

    	I heard a recent interview with HAYWARD/LODGE that was 10 P.M
here and (this was live) 3 AM in g.b. Well any ways hayward says
all there albums will be c.d buy the end of this year. He also
mentioned that Days of future pass was recorded in 4 track and
the quality for c.d. is the best you can get, with '67' specs.

Another foot-note was the reason Days of future happened was
that the studio was curious how a rock band would sound with an
orchestra in 'stereo'. The MB'S made a deal that they could get
2 weeks of studio time free and they would come up with some music
with the orchestra. The rest is history.

That brings the Moodies compact discography that I know about to:
	DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED
IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD
	VOICES IN THE SKY (anthology)
	LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER
	THE PRESENT
	THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE
It looks like all the older albums are going to be reissued, in which case
there's little reason to bother with VOICES IN THE SKY.

| | Yesterday while wasting time at Shoppers World in Framingham (MA),
I wandered into Record Town and looked at the few Moodies discs
they had. There was something new! "The Moody Blues - Collection"
(Castle CCSCD 105). It is a new (copyright 1986) compilation of
Moodies songs, most of which I can't place as having been on albums.
It is a made-for-CD release, digitally mastered, and has 18 tracks.
I haven't played it yet so I can't say how long it is or how it
sounds. Anyway, here are the tracks:

    	 1. Go Now
    	 2. Steal Your Heart Away
	 3. Lose Your Money
    	 4. I Don't Mind
    	 5. Let Me Go
    	 6. I'll Go Crazy
    	 7. Time is on My Side
    	 8. It's Easy Child
    	 9. Something You've Got
    	10. I've Got a Dream
    	11. From The Bottom of My Heart
    	12. Can't Nobody Love You
    	13. Stop
    	14. Come Back (I Don't Want to Go On Without You)
    	15. Bye Bye Bird
    	16. It Ain't Necessarily So
    	17. True Story
    	18. And My Baby's Gone

While I've been a fan of the Moodies for a long time, I don't claim
to be an expert on their music. Can anyone place these songs in
time, significance, etc? Go Now I've heard of, but the rest?

BTW, this seems to be a British import.

| | I think all of these come from the pre-DAYS OF FUTURE PAST era. The current
Moodies members don't seem to consider those albums to be Moodies albums at
all (e.g., the seventh album since DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is called SEVENTH
SOJOURN, despite the 2-3 Moodies albums that precede DAYS OF FUTURE PAST).
I would have to agree.

Just to talk about this record (re-1). The songs you mentioned

others that it was before 'DAYS OF' and again the music you mentioned
is the worse, but what was gratifying was the selection of songs
by HAYWARD that were on the album, (you didn't seem to mentioned
these), they fall in with some good if not best work he did. This
is pre-hayward but the magic is still there.

I have. I recorded the Tape in the mid 70's and have since lost

I listen to a cassette that I make from my Reel to Reel master for

onto them with it. My question is, I thought it was a double albumn
on record, but the CD listed in Noteworthy (POP 820159) is the same
price as all the rest (13 others) $10.54, it this correct? And
    how is the quality?

| | "The Seventh Sojourn" is a single album. If this is what you're thinking
of, it has songs like "I'm Just a Singer In A Rock & Roll Band".
Like all Moody Blues CDs,the quality is excellent.
They had 2 double albums - "This Is The Moody Blues", a greatest hits
compilation, and "Caught Live + 5", 3 live sides and a 4th side of
unreleased studio cuts. I doubt either of these will ever come out
on CD. They sort of made up for it by issuing a CD last year (called
"The Moody Blues Story" or something like that) with all of the "unreleased"
cuts from these 2 albums, without the live tracks, and a few others they
had kicking around. I haven't seen that CD around in a while, but it was
on the same label - Threshold/London/Decca/Polygram.

| | Most of the old Moodies albums, up to Seventh Sojourn, were mixed to be
essentially one continuous track, with one song fading into the next.
I like that - it gives the album a sense of continuity.
If you're just getting started, other albums to check out are "To Our Children's
Children's Children" and "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour". But then again,
all of their old albums are excellent.
"Days of Future Passed", what they consider their first album (ignoring
the "Go Now" album, pre-Justin Hayward and mellotron) is a bit different
from the others. Cuts alternate between the band and a full orchestra.
Supposedly when they were recording it, Decca wanted a rock band with an
orchestra to show off their new stereo techniques, and they were supposed
to record a rock version of a piece of classical music (Verdi?). Instead
they wrote this themselves and recorded it more or less in secrecy, surprising
the executives with the results. They recorded the orchestra in normal
working hours, and later (like on weekends) the band did their own bits.
It's one of the first rock albums to really take advantage of multi-track
recording.

of B-sides and singles not available, I believe, on other albums (with
the exception of "Late Lament," which is just the spoken part at the end
of "Nights in White Satin.") All of the songs are from 1967 and
1968, and include "Fly Me High," "Kings and Queens," "Cities,"
and others. A nice CD ....

| | You are right the one I am wanting (I won't hold my breath) is "This
is the Moody Blues". It is a great set of music with the orchestra
and rock combined. Another albumn on that line is the "War of the
Worlds", a Rock and Roll with orchestra background. I think "This
is the MB" is some of the best music ever recorded, there are not
any bad (ie weak) tracks on it, I never want to fast forward or
    skip any of them.
Thanks for the info, I quess I will just have to be satisfied with

first?? I always thought "A Question of Balance," held that honor.

Also, check out "On The Threshold of a Dream," and "In Search of
the Lost Chord." I agree with them being recorded to have everything
just blend into the next song. Not long ago, my wife and I, just
locked the doors, shut down the lights, and put in a rack of 6 CDs
played from start to finish. Nice treat!!

| | Dave,
Ray Thomas was also in the original lineup. He played harmonica then.
I think Graeme Edge was with them then. Denny Laine and someone else
left, to be replaced by Justin Hayward and John Lodge. The rest is history.
Too bad no one uses the mellotron any more. You get a sound out of it
that nothing else can replace.
"A Question of Balance" is far from being their first album. As the last reply
shows, it came out in 1970.
Additions to the list (sorry, no song titles):
The Present - 1983
The Other Side Of Life - 1986
Sur La Mer - 1988
In my opinion, "Sur La Mer" is a pretty dismal album. Most of the album is
just Hayward and Lodge, with drum machines and synthesizers. It's the
second album not to have Ray Thomas on it at all. Officially, he is still
in the band and tours with them, but for some reason he isn't recording
with them.
Most of the solo albums are pretty good. They've all done solo albums -
Justin Hayward and John Lodge (together and separately), Ray Thomas
(2 albums), The Graeme Edge Band (2 albums), and Michael Pinder (1 album
after he quit). Most of the Hayward and/or Lodge albums are on CD.
Someone mentioned the "War of the Worlds" album. That's another one with
Justin Hayward on it - he sings "Forever Autumn".

memory, and the years gone by, have left me in a confused state.
Still love the Moody Blues though!.

Thanks for posting the albums since Long Distance Voyager ... sorry
to say, I lost interest in the Moody's studio efforts since that
    album.

Here's a second vote for their CDs, by the way ... sound quality
is excellent (of the ones I have so far, anyway).

Ditto on the mellotron, I love the sound of that instrument. What
other groups used the mellotron? I've always uniquely identified
    it with the Moody Blues.

A list of bands that used the mellotron is extensive. In fact,
there's a note in RECORDS called "Mellotron Music" about this subject.

Off the top of my head, some other mellotron users:
Beatles, Stones, Traffic, Cream, Yes, King Crimson, Kinks, Capt.
Beefheart, Freddy Fender (!!??), Cheap Trick, Family, Barclay James
Harvest, Caravan, Herbie Hancock, Tomita, Tangerine Dream, Jethro
    Tull, etc. etc.

Most of these were for studio use only as the instrument has a
reputation for not taking road abuse well.

| | Add Led Zeppelin to that list. "Kashmir" wouldn't be the same without it.
And the first use - Del Shannon's "Runaway".
I believe Kitaro still uses one on occasion.
The last time I saw a mellotron was at a Moody Blues concert in 1983.
Justin Hayward wheeled it out for "Running Water" (and used it on the album
too). John Lodge played his double-neck 12-string/bass. I once read an
interview with the Moody Blues, and they were asked why they don't use
the mellotron any more. They said you just can't get tapes for it now.
It was a much smaller unit that I thought it would be (synthesizer-size)
but they said it was a mellotron.
