| Bose makes "Roommates" powered speakers that are designed for just
this use. They are well under $400 a pair, I believe. You should
be able to find them at any Bose dealer, including Tweeter and
Manufacturers Marketplace (!). Or you could do what I did and
buy a "boom box" (aka "third-world briefcase") and plug the CD
player into the AUX input (assuming you buy one that has such).
I paid about $100 for my Toshiba SX-2 (something like that) and
it has very good sound indeed. I found that I could get significantly
better sound from units costing over $160, but I wasn't willing
to pay that. Besides, you get AM/FM and a cassette deck!
I just hope your office neighbors have the same musical tastes
as you do...

| I have a slightly more off-beat suggestion, which still might
fit your budget:
Get a pair of high quality mini-speakers (I happen to really
like the ADS 300 series, which have extremely good imaging
and provide all but the last octave or so of bass [not "base"]).
Then you have to drive them somehow without getting a huge amp,
right? Get a reasonable quality car booster amp (I use a Proton
for my video speakers, you might find that a top-of-the-line
Radio Shack with EQ works for you) and a Radio Shack 12V
regulated power supply, and run the headphone output of your CD
(so you can control the level) into whichever input of the amp
works best. It ain't Snells driven by Mark Levinson electronics,
but it ain't bad, and it doesn't take up much space.

| I personally have found that EPI TE-70's are the best buy for the
buck. I used them in my MAZDA GLC. (Strapped into the back seats
with the seat belts of course).

| Or even Radio Shack Minimus-7s. But I thought that an integrated
solution (ala "Roommates") was cleaner.

| I would like to add my vote for the Bose Roommates. I own a pair
and think that for the size and cost they have wonderful sound.

| Radio shack has another set off speakers like the minimus 7's that
are even smaller, and are only about 20 bucks. They also have an
amplified set of speakers out now. They probably won't sound as
nice as the Bose speakers, but you'll have an extra $350 for disks.
