| | I have the Technics SLP-8, don't know about the 3 except that it is not quite
as stable tracking wise as the 8 . The performance and features on the 8 are
great, I think the 3 has the wireless remote, doesn't it ? I am very pleased
with the 8, no complaints, it can be gotten at discount as well .

| | Although the original note was from '85, I'm new to this file and,
since there was no further info, I'll offer this from my SL-P3 manual:

    EMPHASIS INDICATOR:
Illuminates when a disc containing *pre-emphasis* is played.

    *Pre-emphasis*
In order to further improve the S/N ratio of compact discs, some
discs include a degree of emphasis in the high frequency range called
pre-emphasis. If these discs are played without any compensation,
the high frequency range will be unnaturally strong. Therefore,
a corresponding amount of de-emphasis is needed to obtain the proper
response. The de-emphasis circuitry of this unit is automatically
activated when a disc having pre-emphasis is played.

I received the player last Christmas, but I believe it has been
replaced by another model number. The unit is feature-loaded.

The only quibble I have is that, ocasionally, when going directly
to a track after inserting the disc, it seems to miss the first
fraction of a second of that track -- as if the beam had over-scanned.
Could this be because the beam picked up the first "groove" in
    mid-rotation?
