  the following;
Weather Report/ Lightning Seeds / Danny Wilson / Natural Life / The LAs
The Heartthobs / Julian Cope / KLF and many more.
Recommended for bouncing your way into work on a sunny day.

| | Well, being a flash git, I've got an autochanger. But, the tape currently
sitting, redundantly, in the car deck is a compilation that an ex-missus made
for me. Well, I think it was for me; oh well, she's not getting it back now.
includes;
Far from home - the Levellers
Oblivion - Terrorvision
Hear me calling - Two Thirds (!)
Respect - Aretha Franklin
Alright Now - Free
Africa - Toto (these "track-scanning" fast-forwards are ace, aren't they!)
Hit - The Sugarcubes
Regina - The Sugarcubes

err..can't remember the other stuff. It's good "summer" driving music though,
cos she made it when we were going down the beach every day last summer
(hmm...or was it June...).

Where did You get the Oldfield version of Alright Now? I think it was
originally issued as a flexi disc to anyone attending the recording of

You sure about that? I played it at some concert a couple of years ago (that's

getting soaked.

doh! I think you know what I mean...
As for what it's called, well, yes. Fingal's cave is just a movement in a
suite, I believe. Fingal's cave just stuck in my mind/memory, because the main
tune that's carried has the same rhythm/syllables as "Fingal's cave", or "Oh,
Fingal's cave", as we used to pathetically sing. It was at least 5 years ago
when I last played it, and I've never checked the programme since, so you may
be right, as to who composed it...However, I'm positive that when we gave our
copies back to the conductor, Shostakovich/Stravinsky was on the cover of the
top piece of music 8-)
re Andrea
I used to play the violin, but now I'm down to the rather less err...cultural
guitar. I've played just about everything during my childhood, as I played in
a few decent orchestras, and went out with a few musicians.....blimey, that
reminds me of that lass with the cello...phew....the things she could do
wi...er......

All in all mmmmm. It's not amazing but is pleasant enough, only 2 of

breeezy 'Jackie's Racing' (no room for the sublime 'Detroit, ah well).
If you've heard Whiteout before, then there's no real surprises, if you
haven't then they're a good honest early 70s style R&B band, with added
Scottishness (hint of Bay City Rollers perhaps bobbing above the

like this one. Vocals are a lot more "up-front", probably 'coz Marta

friends. Anyway, what we have here is a selection of Eastern European
(Bulgaria, Macedonia, Hungary, etc) and Far Eastern (Taiwan, Bali) folk
song and chant, along with a smattering of Native American chanting.
These sources are (generally) liberally sampled, whizzed around and
munged and then overlayed on top of a bang-up-to-date electronic rhythm
section. Stir in some water-colour washes of synthesized sound, Marta
singing traditional Balkan folk song and Bob's your uncle, another
chart album. A warning though, its not as funky or popy as the last
    one.

According to some "Glastonbury Facts" I read recently (can't remember where)
enough excreta is produced at the festival to shove a good fist-sized lump

There's a thought to keep you warm on winter nights.

I was about to put this in this note as my current fave before all this
started up. This is all IMHO as a Weller fan who has every
single/album he's made since '77 (although the later Style Council
stuff is a tad underplayed in the collection !) :-

Stanley Road is good/excellent, some of the tracks are superb, a couple
are a bit iffy but overall a good package. To me it sounds like a
cross between his first solo album and Wild Wood. At the time of
release his first album was generally slated but that also is a good
buy. If you're going to slag him off for being mellow slag off Wild
Wood, as Andrea says that's the one for navel-watching, but it's also
the album that got the best reviews.

On the subject of him getting old etc. etc. he couldn't act as an
'angry young man' for ever, would look a bit ridiculous now he's in his
mid-30's, and his music certainly hasn't mellowed as much as other
artist who have covered the same time span.

IMHO, but then all muisc taste is.

Have to say I agree there...but then I always thought the Sex Pistols
were the biggest con in history. Hmmm, "The Great Rock & Roll
Swindle"...never was a title more apt. Give me the Clash, the Buzzcocks
and the Undertones every time - but not the Sex Pistols!

For the record, IMO Jim Kerr never had much integrity. U2 were
great for the first 3/4 records (The Unforgettable Fire was the
beginning of the end). Rattle & Hum was absolute dross and if I saw the
band now, I think I'd push to the front just to lob a few tomatoes at
Bono. Paul Weller still commands respect in my book, as does Elvis
Costello, but there aren't many of them left.

One reason why my record collection looks more and more
    retro-oriented...

I still have a great deal of respect for the guy probably because he
really has'nt changed in attitude since the Pistols. He's still as
cynical as ever and clever with it too and unlike such lightweights
as Adam Ant his integrity has remained intact down the years.

A con after Lydon and the purile efforts of Jones and Cook (Friggin in
Riggin? anybody who considers that to be the Pistols is a wanker).
Still, "NMTB" is probably one of the greatest Rock n Roll albums ever.

How does John Lydon avoid being classed as a "lightweight" these days?
The only decent stuff he has released in the last decade, ie post The
Flowers of Romance, has been the collaborations with Afrika Bambaataa
    and Leftfield.

Hardly the stuff of a musical god. Lets face it most of the PIL output
has been uninspiring in that period.

Er...no. All I did was answer a question; as it happens, I know all
these bands inside out, whereas I've heard absolutely nowt by bands
such as the Throbbing Muses, Radiohead and the Wildhearts, to name but
three (hope I got their names right!).

    Anyway to recap:

    >Eddie & the Hot Rods
    >Elvis Costello
    >The Buzzcocks

I defy *anyone* to say they've not heard anything by these.

    >The Real Kids
Boston power pop band of the late 70s/80s. They were renowned for their
live performances at the CBGBs club.

    >The Milkshakes
The most prolific British retro garage band and the founders of the
"Medway" sound. They recorded all their music in mono using '60s gear
and their live shows were said to be something of a riot. I guess you
can sum them up as the Kinks meet Bo Diddley meet punk rock.

    >The Redskins
Heavily politicised R&B outfit, captained by NME ghostwriter Chris
Dean. He once described their music as "what Martha & the Vandellas
would sound like if they were factory workers from Smirnograd" ;-)

    >The Crawdaddies
American R&B/60s garage band. You can be forgven for not knowing them
    ;-)

    >The Nerves
Another American garage band, featuring Peter Case, Jack Lee and Paul
Collins (ring any bells); they recorded the original version of "Hanging On the
Telephone", later made famous by Blondie.

    >The Prisoners
Mythical. I always liked the Jam, but if you asked me which was the
best mod revival band of the lot, I'd have to say the Prisoners. They
were also James Taylor's first band (no, not *that* James Taylor).

I didn't say he wouldn't have got into the "biz" without the Pistols.
You could direct that comment at possibly 75% of the bands who have entered

Pistols weren't the most important band of 1976/77.

The comment that I made all those notes ago is that Weller was (and
still is) producing better music than Lydon has in the last 13 years (I

with the faithful blindly following. Someone in here confessed to Style

pretty trivial and not very relevant to this note (offline, perhaps?).

Not that I've got any problems about it; I'm not from the Medway area
and I've never met anyone who played in any of those bands. I just
    happen to like the music.

About a year ago. Presumably he's dead, since he "disappeared" near the

| |
Tim please bear in mind that I am not having a go at you here....

"As far as you know" implies you have no facts to back it up. How are
you so sure when the police, media, band members, family etc etc claim to
have no idea as to his whereabouts ? Come on, we need some more
details. I am genuinely interested/concerned and would like some
    clarification.

Given the fanatical/hysterical nature of the letters pages in various
music publications do you really think there would have been no word of
his location. Even an acknowledgement that he is still alive,as the
sad (no insult here) fans whose lives virtually revolve around the band
and the lyrics Richy writes that they whole heartedly empathise, and
indulge themselves in i.e self mutilation, annorexia etc really need a
sign. If it has all got too much then he should do the decent thing and
give it up for him and the family/band/friends/fans(my personal order
    of importance) benefit.

Reggie fortunately was fictional, this unfortunately is not the case
    with Richy.

                      Stretch.

| | I do have certain indications of the truth.

You put me in a fairly difficult position.

One of my brothers' friends' brothers' is a private investigator hired by
    someone very close to Richie.

As far as I know (I'm going on my brothers word and I can't see why
he'd tell me lies over something like this) he was found a few months ago
in Chicago and wants to be *LEFT ALONE* to sort himself out.

Now then this may be someone taking the p***, if it is I'd like to say if
this does not turn out to be true, I'm very sorry, but I'm only repeating
in good faith what somebody else has said.

a resume (can't do those pesky accented "e"s) of the situation. They have
spoken to the people who were closest to him, including a kind of "girlfriend"
who only those close-ish to him knew about. She heard from him once, and a
friend of hers saw him in Britain not long after his disappearance. As far as
she's concerned, he's still missing. I'm fairly sure that if she knew he was
okay, she'd say so, as she seemed to be fairly empathetic towards the fans and
their concern.

a compilation tape. Pretty top stuff it was too - Throwing Muses/Pixies/
Goodbye Mr Mckenzie and loads more. Unfortunately I lent it to some git
  who didn't return it.
A couple of weeks ago I met up with Piers and made him make me another
copy, but this time he was under strict instructions to remove whiney
Michael Stipe and his cohorts, and replace their god-awful caterwauling
with The Only Ones ( "Another Girl, Another Planet "). This musical
masterpiece was "gently" playing as a bounced into the Brown Lubianka
( Enterprise House ) this morning. So it may be winter outside, but
  in my heart its spring.

| | Bit of a Neil Young fest this morning. Currently have Harvest, Harvest
Moon, Arc and Weld in the CD player. After Harvest, NY said that he
found himself firmly in the middle of the road, and so he headed
straight for the ditch. Personally, I think he sounds better from the
    ditch; dirtier and more grungey.

It makes me chuckle when I listen to "Heart of Gold" or "Harvest" or
"The Needle and the Damage Done" against some of the 'noise' off his
    later albums.

Never been too sure of Steely Dan, although I have always liked Donald
Fagens solo lp 'Nightfly'. I found this Best Of Cd in Woolies
yesterday for 4.99, so gave it a whirl.

Its actually not bad, and I'm surprised how many of the songs I knew
already. I'm not normally a fan of this 'calm' style of tune, but this
    is OK.

gave this album a good review also.

Hey, quit slagging Gary Numan ! Tubeway Army were superb, all those
synths, monotone voice, weird lyrics - I loved it then and still do....

The Untouchables 'I spy for the FBI' was re-recorded as 'I spy for the
DTI' and was used as an anthem by 'Laser 558' (before they were boarded
and shut down). Come to think of it they were the last really decent
Radio station I can remember listening to...

The demo tape by Spin which I've been listening to is great, watch out
for them. If there's any justice at all in the Music Biz then they're
going to be big, it's even made me consider an alternative career as
manager, if I can just persuade the Guitarist that he can't play
guitar, write the songs _and_ manage the band all on his own.

    Graham,

I think the first problem this band are going to have is with their
name, there are quite a few 'Spin's around, and one quite popular
'Sp!n' who only disbanded a few years ago (to reform as Gene, fact
fans). Vent, who I always seem to go on about, had recently to rename
themselves 'Vent 414' due to the large numbers of Vent's around. Local
Reading band, Bennet, were Meanwhile, then Cooper, then Bennet because
of more established bands with the same name.

| | Ash, mmmm,
The album has it's moments but it really depends where you're coming
from musically. I like to listen to hardcore sometimes and bits of the
album appeal to me from that point of view, but, I like a nice tune
sometimes and the singles are excellent (Kung Fu, sits somewhere nicely
between the 2). If you like the singles then you'll probably like 70%
    of the album, or something.

From what I've read of this, it was effectively a recording taken
straight from the desk - before being mixed for the PA - so it will
    presumably have been mixed afterwards by the sound engineer who taped it;

There was plenty of bass in the tent when it was recorded !

ABBA songs in various languages: Swedish, French, German and Spanish.
Much more enjoyable when the words are not easily understandable
although I did find the foreign words on the World Wide Wibble Wobble
and can learn to sing along in another language... as long as no-one is
    listening!

| | At last, a tape du jour that I'll admit to.

Welcome to the Tragic Kingdom by No Doubt. I really like it. They're
classed as ska/grunge but I believe they've gone a bit beyond that now.
The singer (Gwen Stefani) could be a Spice Girl's older sister.
Apparently they're really popular in America but yet to make much of an
    impact over here.

| | Well I don't feel so embarrassed about putting .436 in now :-)

I can imagine this might have a similar impact to Extreme's More Than
Words, where people bought the album thinking it'd be really nice
ballads and turned out to be a bit heavy :-) Well be warned that Don't
Speak is the ballad on the album, the rest is a bit noisy ;-)

I don't get the chance to listen to any decent music in my car, cos the
radio in it can only pick up one local MW station and it's all stuff
like Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton etc, but on a saturday they have

(Thanks Clive!). Its a wonderful 80 minutes where nothing really
happens. Like Julian says - 'its a great way to get sent to the land
    of hyper-nod'.

also - the Fun Loving Criminals album. How come no one here told me
how good that CD is? Great music for cruising around the car park,
looking mean and pretending to be a bank robber. Or something.
