| |
Been watching Born on the 4th of July, Niall?

Anyway I've got to agree on the Bryan Adams song - Pure Dross!

However, it's got to be said that 99% of all singles released this year
are poor enough to challenge for second place!

    Welcome back to '74!

| | I'm going to jump to the defence of Jason D here. The chap at least
takes his music seriously, and, even if he doesn't have the best voice
in the world, it isn't bad.

Jason D has taken music lessons, and of course he also sings in the
Stage Show. There are many, many bands who can't do anything outside a
    studio.

One of the reasons I like groups like Runrig and Queen, is that the
singers can/could belt out the songs effortlessly live on stage.

    Niall,

Just the use of some of your mildly concealed expletives put me in my
mind of that film (which I saw last night, hence the immediate connection).
Only difference was, the film made no attempt to conceal them, but this
isn't the film conference, so back to Worst Single of the year...

have to make some effort at concealing them or else I'd be in trouble.
    BTW
"Good Vibrations" - Markey Mark & the Funky Bunch stank as much as
anything else . Easily known that he's Donnie New Kid's brother.

Niall - everybody is entitled to their own opinion, and the "Worst
Single" discussion is so subjective that it cannot be taken seriously.

For example - I like just about every song on your list except the
    Jason song.

So, in a nutshell - you're wasting your time mate.

| | Most music is subjective . Doesn't this mean that the majority of the
notes in all of the music conferences are a waste of time by the
    yardstick of -.2?
It's simply a note for people to express waht they really disliked
during the year . I nobody wants it then nobody will reply.

Yes! But it's nearly Christmas, so people think these notes are a good idea.
Who am I to argue?  Anyway, back to the subject in hand;
"I'm too Sexy" was pretty awful. Spitting Image last Sunday did a spoof top ten
where every song was something like `I want to sex your sexy sex'. Are these
songs coming about because nobody's having sex due to fear of hiv/aids? Are
people singing about it rather than doing it? And if so, why are the songs
always so awful?

re .14
I saw an article in NME last week (somebody in my house bought it, I wouldn't
spend my honestly-earned cash on it, &c.) about how to be a Goth. It
included hanging around war memorials, wearing lots of jewellery so people
can hear the death-rattle as you approach, dressing like Morticia from the
Addams Family (even if you are a bloke).
It was, even for an NME article, quite amusing.

confused with wierd much as goths would like to) is just a bit silly ,
that's all . Lots of goth music (cept SOM and Siouxsie) is crap too. I
think All About Eve deserve a mention in this topic for the incredibly
naff single of this year "Farewell Mr. Sorrow" .

Don't get me wrong, when I lived in Reading I knew alot of Goths,

| | Smiths? All About Eve? Tch!	I hate jangly, airy-fairy Goth (e.g. All
About Eve, The Mission, and I *HATE* The Smiths) :-)

I know the sort of "teeny-Goth" you mean, and the "real Goths" despise
them too - it's a perfectly normal, human reaction :-)
They all think that The Cure are the be-all and end-all of life; and I
have heard stories of teenies who hadn't even heard of Bauhaus...!
They all try to look like Robert Smith (ho!ho!) and make personal
depression & mock-suicide attempts a way of attracting attention.

As for Goth music I hate The Cure, The Mission, All About Eve - I do
like some of the old Sisters, Virgin Prunes, Death In June, CURRENT93,
Fields of the Nephilim, Skeletal Family, some Bauhaus, etc... and think
that there is a section of Goth music which provides really listenable
music (e.g. The Nephilim). I also like some New Beat stuff too e.g.
Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails....

I have been "judged" before because I was wearing a new Nephilim
T-shirt by a guy at a nightclub who looked upon me with scorn; however
after dancing to stuff like Virgin Prunes he realised I was not one of
the Neph_and_Cure_only gang and we had a great chat - he told me about
the teeny who hadn't heard of Bauhaus, yet called themself a Goth, that
    made me laugh!!!

I think real Goths are great people, some of the best... it's a shame
there is not the same diversity of music offered to kids these days
(IMHO of course)... ahhh... when I were a lad....
