	and knock 'em dead in Hyde Park Corner underground.

	If you could email me the unveiling of your unique interpretation
	of this old masterpiece, I can arrange for The Woodley Branch of
	the Rubettes Appreciation Society to come along and cheer you on!

        Then you could turn your hand to some more '74 raves:

        I can't play this xylophone (large and wooden) but buying it seemed
	a good idea at the time. However I've knocked out the riff to Van &
	Cliff's song "Whenever God shines his light on me", and the Cure's
	"Close to me". (Better than the usual "Three Blind Mice" stuff).

    So the only thing I could do in your last-gang-in-town band would be a
    bit of soundless guitar histrionics...my best is Beck '66 (cross ref
    "Blow up" - a 1967 Swinging London film), next is Mick Jones "I play
    guitar but I'm a Guerrila too" line in Axe-poses, for my Keef
    impression I'm afraid you'll have to supply the necessary ingrediends
    blah blah blah...

    Are you and the band based in London then ??

    What ever happened to Ian (?) Mitchell, apart from him ending up
    in some very dodgy magazines?. And the Rollers manager was'nt exempt
    from the odd bit of scandal either was he? 
    
    Not as wholesome as the likes of Flintlock. Dear oh Dear!. It's
    all coming out now innit?. Probably the ugliest group ever to grace
    the collective pages of FAB 201, Jackie, and Mates ( get your free
    fingernail heart transfers here!!).

    Around 77/78 when Dame Fame had given up on The Rollers, one of them
    (Les McKeon ??) OD'ed on some strong substance but did *not* go to
    meet his creator. Not bad for a man who told the FAB 208 that his
    favourite drink was milk.

    Other than that I haven't heard sight or sound of them since.

    Bob I'd still like to see this band of yours.

    was the idea of ****** ***** (censored to protect the other guilty
    party) and is still in the rehearsal stage. Suffice to say we have

    Thanks, Tim. The band *does* have a provisional name, which
    embarrassment prevents me from mentioning in a family conference.
    Like I say, it's not really *my* band, I'm just a recent recruit.
    We're still waiting to see if we can get enough songs together to
    actually make it worthwhile performing (if anyone'll have us).
    
    Back to the base topic - so far, I have had a totally underwhelming
    response to my request (i.e. zero), so perhaps I will have to steel
    myself and try and find the song at my local record emporium. Then
    again, I doubt if I could face the embarrassment - I am now old
    enough that I am not dictated to by the whims of fashion, nor do
    I particularly worry when a shop assistant gives me funny looks
    when I buy something old or left-field, but after all, there are
    limits!!

    What a SMALL world.  My girlfriend and I were out on Saturday night,
    and right out of the blue, she said "remember when we had a crush on
    the Bay City Roller" :-), I said "yeah, but I rather not remember those
    days :-)"..... and out of the blue, I see this note :-)... I think I
    ran out and bought every album they ever made... including the 2 from
    England (well I'm from the states, and I couldn't get them here).. my
    sister lived in England at the time, and my brother-in-law bought them
    at a yard sale :-) :-) :-) and that was when they were at their PEEK
    :-)...
    
    I want to know what the magazines over there said about them? 
    Over here, 16 and Tigerbeat lied, made them out to be the boys next
    door.  I mean what happened with Ian?  I had always heard that Eric was
    a homosexual, was that true?  And Les Mckeon (was that his name?), he
    always reminded me of a girl :-), my true love was Alan... the only
    SMART one to quit the group when they sold their FIRST album :-).....
    In bars over here, they still play S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y night! and people
    still get really rowdie with it.... 
    
    
    Oh, BTW... this CRUSH was when we were both in 7th grade.... which over
    here makes us like 12 years old.  I mean REAL men don't were knickers

    I must say I take much exception to the fact that nobody has mentioned
    the ground-breaking RUBETTES yet. Their street-party classic album
    "Where it's 'at" was never off the turntable down at the local parish
    disco. These boys really knew how to "get on down" and "kick ass".

    None of your mumbo-jumbo Sailor "January" for us...we felt the heat
    off the streets...blah blah...

    And what's happened to our "Brotherhood of Man" topic ???

    Hey, I remember Noosha Fox! She was the high point of any TOTP she
    appeared in as far as I was concerned. Didn't she have an amazingly

    You're quite right about Sailor and Pilot there, Rod. Those two
    back-to-back keyboards were nickelodeons, I believe.
    
    Isn't it amazing how much of this stuff us hep cats can drag out
    of the old memory banks?
    
    I remember, about ten years ago, this strange young French woman
    turned up on our doorstep, believing it to be the house of one of
    the Rubettes. She had hitched all the way from Dole, in Northern
    (?) France, to try and meet her heroes. As it happens, there were
    no Rubettes resident with us at the time, but next morning (we put
    her up for the night) we phoned the 'Rubettes Hotline' and found
    that the band were playing in London that night. The story has a
    happy ending - she went to the show and got backstage afterwards
    to meet 'the lads', before returning to France.

    Yeah that was it, One More Night. I can't remember how it goes though
    as I didn't play it very often. I only bought it because it was
    made in luminous vinyl. Perhaps I'll have to dig it out of my
    collection and give it a whirl if it's that good. At least I won't
    have any trouble in finding it. Just switch all the lights off and
    look for the glow .........
    

    Another group we can't forget - Showaddywaddy! Except I can't remember
    a single single of theirs... But they were never off TOTP for ages.

    The group you're thinking about with Stone in the title was
    Rosetta Stone, and they were most definitely tosh...
    
    I admit I bought "You Are My Love" by Liverpool Express. It's 
    now one of my wife's favourite records. Hahahaha. Incidentally,
    their lead singer Billy Kinsey used to be in one of those Mersey
    beat combos, the Merseybeats, or was it the Merseys? 
    
    I also beg to differ with the opinion that Pilot were "wimps" from
    Edinburgh - most of them mutated into parts of the Alan Parsons
    Project. And of course John Miles sang vocals on "Tales Of Mystery..."
    
    But I'm glad to see that everyone has erased from their mind the
    utter horror that was...RACEY. A one, two, three:
    "Some girls do, and some girls don't, some girls will, and a-some

	Another *NOT* tosh band I've mentioned was The Faces...used to be
	great in their early days.

    Aha, yes! These bands (Mott, Faces etc.) were really from an earlier
    (mid-late 60's era) era, rather than being Mickie Most-type monsters.
    I'd also put the likes of Slade, Gazza and T.Rex in the former category.
    
    Well do I remember being part of the Mott barmy army round about
    71-2, before they nearly split and went on to be rescued from obscurity
    by one Mr. D. Bowie. I used to go and see them live whenever I could.
    
    I think I heard a rumour not so long ago that tony Orlando and Dawn
    were reforming...... and where now, yon Osmonds?

    When I mentioned T.Rex a few notes back , I was not implying that
    they were by any means "tosh" , quite the opposite . The UK lost
    a great musical talent in September '77 , and Marc should not be

    Damn, I've been racking my brains for the past few days trying to
    think of that group, something Stone.  It came to me last night
    driving home, "Rosetta Stone" but I gather someone else already
    remembered.  All that brain power, for nothing.
    
    Hey, another exciting band to come out of that era was 'Child'.
    Can't remember any of the songs offhand but I remember buying the
    LP with a picture of the group with their manly bodies on the front,
    dare I say,,,, topless.  Ohh, it was great.  And not a hairy chest
    in sight.

    Dave, yes I will not forget the gig. I think I even enjoyed it. But
    now the heroic chest-beating gazing-into-the-dawn banner-waving Bono
    makes me want to throw up...

    As the saying goes "If I could do all over again....I'd do it all over
    you..."

    PS Later in '79 a Donegal friend of mine organised a four night
    "new-wave" music fest in Spiddal ( I think)...it was excellent, we had
    The Radiators From Space (Pogues' Phil Chevron's old band), The Atrix
    a few bands from Derry and lots more.
