Anyone know anything about Jonathon Richman and the Modern Lovers?
I've been getting into Roadrunner just lately, and would like to
know more.
Cheers,
Mike

If you like Roadrunner, the lp to get is called The Modern Lovers
(as opposed to being credited to JR and the ML). It was recorded
in 1976, and much of it was produced by John Cale. The second lp
is also good, I think that's called Johnathan Richmond and the Modern
Lovers. The third lp, which goes back to a kind of sparse, Buddy
Hollyish rock'n'roll sound, isn't bad, either, and is called,
unbelievably, Rock'n'Roll with the Modern Lovers. They were all
on Berserkly Records in the UK.
The first is definitely the best if you like the sound they go for
on Roadrunner. I don't know if it's still available, but if you
can't get hold of it, mail me.

I saw him a number of times when he was having hits - he's a great
live performer. At the Free Trade Hall (Manchester), one guy in
the audience get shouting out "I love you Johnathan"; he didn't
see that much of the gig :-). He comes over now and again - played
a few times in London last year I recall.

Thanks for all the info. The only album that I can
see in the shops is Modern Lovers 88. Has anyone seen/heards this.I
don't suppose there is a greatest hits compilation around (cop-out
I know !!!). I think I'll try and find the first album. Is all
the stuff on it as good as Roadrunner ? This track does not seem
to square up with the other thing that I dimly remember - Egyptian
Reggae ?
Anyone got any opinions?

| 376.4 | good old Rhino.... | VANGRD::SALLITT | Dave - @RKG & ICI, 0642432193 | Mon Mar 20 1989 12:27 | 13 |
There are some Jonathan Richman/Modern Lovers titles on Rhino Records;
these are re-masters of the originals, and are available on CD,
LP or cassette.
Finding them could be a problem; they're imported/distributed in
the UK by CM Distribution, of Harrogate. Your local High St. store
can order them, but since most are only interested in what they
can sell zillions of, you may have to order direct.
Rhino will sell via mail order from the USA, though, if you're
desperate.
