New question: what happened to the only DJ I ever really rated,

    - where is he now?

| 189.4 | Almost none | BISTRO::WARD |  | Fri Sep 02 1988 13:03 | 12 |
| | Keith, I too was surprised to hear Roger Scott on Radio 1. It
appears he's joined them to do the Stereo Sequence on Saturday
afternoons now that Johnnie Walker has gone to pastures new.

As for daytime DJs - hmmm - Richard Park on Radio Clyde (now program
controller of Capital) used to have a good lunchtime show and Neil
Fox on Capital 10.00-12.00 midnight has some good wit and reasonable
records. Radio 1 is mediocre with DJs persistantly (sp?) quoting
from The Sun, The Star or The Mirror. Hopefully this tabloid
radio will be layed to rest when the airwaves become deregulated
    soon.

| | I agree with .4.

I used to listen to Radio 1 but most of the time now, its just drivel.

Chris Tarrant on the breakfast programme on Capital is absolutely
brilliant. (He used to do that crap kids programme, TISWAS, which
didn't work out too well - I reckon his humour was wasted on the
    kids though).

Neil Fox is also good - I have a feeling he is another Joe 90 lookalike
(whatever happened to him by the way)?

I cannot stand Graham Dene at lunchtime though - pass me the bucket.
That man is awful. Another awful pair are Mick Brown and Pat Sharp
    - they produced that awful record that goes "Lets all chant, ooohhh,
    oohhhh ooohhhh).

The other good programme is the Capital Doc where you can ring in
with any personal or sexual problems. Interesting listening......

It was not 'crap', it was a kids programme which appealed to grown-ups

| | Here's a question for you - what should "local" radio be all about.
I was reading that probably the last IBA announced station will
be in Oxford next year - however the article complained about the
sort of output the station was going to be geared for - any ideas
    - should it be pop/chat/classical/minority/news - what ?

| | Ocean Sound is the newest local radio station I've come across
and they seem to have got the mix just right. They are lucky enough
to have several wavelengths covering a large area, but most people
can tune into both "East" and "West" - they split the shows during
the day so that one side has 'pop' and the other 'chat'. The timetable
looks a bit like this :-
	breakfast: - same both sides
	morning : - east = chat / west = pop
	afternoon: - east = pop / west = chat
teatime : - same both sides
They also split medium wave and FM so on a Saturday when most of the
day is sport there is one frequency which ignores sport and plays
	music.
There are also local interest shows for the Isle of Wight and Chichester
	etc and a Navy show.
All-in-all (not ALL-IN-1) they give a good choice thro' the day
giving local and national news and varied music/chat.
I like it anyway - shame it only just reaches Reading :-(

There are three areas - East, West and North
	97.5 = East = portsmouth area  103.2 = west = southampton area

you can just get 103.2 in Deaf Park car=park on a good day.

The plan is for four independant national stations (at least
to start with). Capital Radio have expressed an interest (and, in
my opinion, are almost certain to suceed due to their track record).
I had also heard that Bramson was interested, but the IBA weren't

| 189.29 | why bother with DJs anyway?? | NUKMAC::WALLACE |  | Thu Sep 15 1988 14:50 | 27 |
| | Why bother with DJs??? Who needs 'em - they're just a waste of time
if you're wanting Music radio. Though it's nice to have someone
occasionally tell you what you've been listening to, in case any
of it was new to you, or stuff you'd forgotten about... and if
you're really lucky you just might get some coverage of news, views
and events (but not on daytime Radio 1 the last time I heard it).

Locally (Birmingham) the only one I regularly listen to is John Slater
(evenings on BRMB) 'cos he covers the local action and the alternatives
    are worse.

Are there any UK stations (local or otherwise) which AREn't obsessed
with the 'cult of personality'??? I don't know of any legal ones, and
I've lost touch with the one illegal (floating) one I used to listen to
until a couple of months ago. On the continent the situation seems to
be better, at least in the places I've been to. Choose the right bar in
Paris, Munich, Amsterdam (or even, ahem, Cannes) and you can usually
find a nice variety of music without the interruptions...

If you ever get the chance, listen to Attila the Stockbroker's "Radio
Rap" from his LP "Libyan Students from Hell" - but you won't hear it on
    your wireless. Good stuff!

| | Contd. from RA Note - so why is KISS (in Boston) such a bad station.
I assume Keith is listening to it cos it's similar in style to Capital
in London. Which Boston station should he be listening to then?
 |
| 189.43 | See 55.11 for similar descriptions | ARGUS::CHILTON | All for freedom & for pleasure | Tue Sep 20 1988 18:46 | 33 |
| | KISS is a pop only station (a la Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, RA :-),
Climie Fisher, WWW); the DJs are loud, enthusiastic, and cater to
the (my guess) 12-16 age bracket.

There isn't one station in particular that he should stick to. I'm
biased though, cuz I'm wicked for pushing those buttons all the
    time.

He should go between WFNX (101.7), which prides itself on bringing
new music to Boston. It seems if they've been brought to Boston
once by FNX and showed any promise the group is then 'sponsored'
by WBCN (evidence - the recent brouhaha over the Sugarcubes). A
big drawback to FNX is it's range. If you're more than five miles
out of Boston proper you can't pick it up. :-(

Besides FNX, I listen to WBCN, probably the most 'powerful' (money,
pull) FM station in Boston. At 104.1 on the dial, its the grand-
daddy of FM in Boston (21 yrs old) and plays a wide range of stuff
    - everything from the Sugarcubes and Camper von Beethoven to Beach
    Boys and Beatles.

Then there's WAAF (107.?)in Worcester. It is the main competition
for BCN but plays more heavy metal. I find AAF is better for finding
out when concert tickets go on sale and nicer do deal with when
you phone up for something (a song request or a question).

    Then there are the college stations.  There are dozens in Boston;
Emerson College has a good one.

Is that enough? Can I stop now? :-)

    Sue

I couldn't find a Radio Station in Boston that I really liked.
Unfortunately, the Ariel (read Antenna) was broken on the hire car,
and I couldn't pick up much. Even more annoying is that Radio/Cassettes
don't seem to come as standard on even the nice hire cars. Mine
    was a Toyota Celica.

Anyway, KISS 108 (They do get prizes for the best name, and the
most inaccessible frequencies, the radio only reached 107.9!), was
much too repetitive. I would say that I preferred Radio 1. I liked
the bit where they would say "40 minutes commercial free rock".
BIG DEAL!!!!!!! Still I'm being a killjoy, coz I only listen to
the radio when I have to really.

106.7 (sp?) 107.3 (which is WAAF, Sue). Also listen occasionally
    to 103.3 ("Oldies 103" - WODS), and KISS108 (107.9) when the others
    have nothing better.

I don't listen to any one station here as I do at home (Capital)
as all the DJs here seem a little inane...maybe I've missed the
    good ones, though.

remember where they are just now.

For DJs, I like Chuck Nolan, 3-7pm on AAF, then Ian O'Malley who
picks up at 7pm on AAF. On AAF, in the morning for the drive in
there's Drew & Karen, they can get really raunchy considering they're

WZLX (Classic Hits) is at 100.7 FM. I really like this station. They
play mostly songs from 1964-1975 or so (i.e. Stones, Beatles, Who,
Zep, Steve Miller, F. Mac, J. Taylor, Guess Who, etc.). The DJ's
are entertaining without being adolescent. Especially check out Bill
Smith (6am-10am) and Harvey Warfield (2pm-6pm).
Highly recommended (if this is within your musical tastes)!

Clyde has a teeny-bop niche (Tiger Tim, Ros King etc) which

Write to Capitol - it can't hurt - Program Controllers are interested in the
publics view as I found out when I wrote to Ocean Sound. I got a very nice
letter saying my comments were appreciated and low and behold when they
re-scheduled a few months later some of my gripes about too much sport etc
were sorted out - it felt like my comments had worked !!
It would be well worth polling people round here and getting theirs views,

| | For all you ex-pariots of Britain working down on the Cote d'Azur
and are missing decent radio, Capital Radio's Breakfast show is
being played from down there this week, via Radio Monte Carlo.
It starts at 7.30 to 10.00 your time.

This morning they had contestants running around St Tropez looking
for a millionaire complete with bottle of bubbly, various mega stars
phone numbers and something else which escapes me. The last I heard
though, they had only found a deck hand.....

Going off on a tangent here for a minute, Chris Tarrant interviewed
a couple of english girls who were working down there on one of
the "boats". Just for being a stewardess which involved "not much
work" according to her, she was getting paid 500 pounds a month!
which apparently is only half what some get for a little harder
    work.

| | For those who may have missed it (and who are interested), Roger Scott
died last Tuesday, October 31st. He had suffered from throat cancer
some time ago, and had undergone an operation in connection with that
which it was hoped had cured him. However, a few weeks ago he was found
to have stomach cancer, and a tumour "the size of a cigarette packet"
was found. It was deemed to be too close to vital organs to be
successfully operated on, and thus the diagnosis was a terminal one.

On Radio 1 and 2 last Saturday there was a ninety minute tribute to him
where he talked about his life and work (he is credited with being one
of the key reasons for Bruce Springsteen's success in the UK). I found
the program interesting, but I admit to being an ardent Roger Scott
    fan anyway.

Like many people who listened to him, I first heard him on Capital
Radio in the seventies, with his afternoon spot from three until seven.
From 1973 until 1988 I listened to him when I could, and I lost count
of the number of bands I started listening to as a result of his shows.
More recently I have not been able to listen to him as often, but I was
shocked and stunned when I heard of his death (I did not know then that
    he was ill).

I, for one, remember him fondly for his shows on Capital, and I will
    miss him.

| | Was anyone listening to the Nicky Campbell show last night about
11.00? He was talking to Gilbert O'Sullivan that well loved 70's
crooner. Gil babes was being a tad too serious about life methinks
and amongst other things wouldn't disclose the amount of money he
was awarded in a court case against his manager. He felt that his
music was the only important thing the public should need to know
about him, rather than the rather distasteful subject of money.

Nicky, I'll give him his due, tried his damndest to get Mr Serious
to let on about the amount but he wouldn't budge.

Does anyone know how much he won? Was it a case of an embarasassingly
low figure or is he really that so well off that the money wasn't
an issue? I believe the figure was published in the Sun so an
    annoymous reply would be acceptable.

Having said all that, he played live in the studio some of his hits
and a wave of nostalgia fell about me. I wouldn't go as far as
buying his LP's, but he could knock up a good tune or two.

| | I always thought that the caller is asked a few details by the
producer or whatever before they go on air, and the punters
play along with sounding surprised when NC recites them. Every
now and then he gets one wrong, but that could just be the
punter fooling around.

making a mint on the stock exchange ?

Maybe he really IS psychic and is going to make his fortune. There
was an announcement today on Radio 1 saying Nicky Campbell was leaving
    due to "personal reasons".

Can anyone expand on that? IMO, he is the best asset to Radio 1 at the
moment - certainly his weekday late show has been contraversial and
thought provoking. I don't think he was one of the one's that the
    Controller thought to be bland.

Does anyone know the reason for his leaving?

| | There are some announcements today about the future of Radio 1, I think
a lot of the 'older' DJs are being got rid off.

I listened to the NC show a lot on my travels, and I enjoyed listening
to him, even though I didn't like most of the music he played.

the end of Simon Bates is a relief.

read "Radio 1 DJ to quit to care for sick wife".. maybe this was the
"personal reason". Did anyone read this, or was it about someone else?

I quite like Mark Goodier version of breakfast (not that I hear it
much, maybe the novelty wears off).

17 ILR stations have it at the moment, I heard the first one
on 210 last Sunday. It is almost identical to the show as it
last appeared on Radio 1, (same jingles, phone-in contests
        etc.) but with adverts.

Love him or hate him, he had an audience of 8 million on the BBC.
It'll be interesting to see how he fares on Independent Radio pitched
        against Danny Baker.

| | This must have been the shortest Breakfast show stint ever, and I'm not
surprised... I've kept listening through brand loyalty but I have been
consistently reminded of the scene where Robin Williams's boss takes over
his show in Good Morning Vietnam and the engineers are saying "You are not
funny. For God's sake don't try to be funny, you can't do it".

for one will be glad to see him shunted on to the breakfast show, as I

night - really enjoyed it. The The (well, Matt and a harmonica player)
did some Acoustic stuff live, and Verve were playing live also. I
thought the Lard thing was funny (THE Marc Riley???), and there were
    some good strange songs.
