Well, I wouldn't say I'm a "fan" since I only have their latest
album "Starfish" to judge them on, but it is a *very* good album.
I think the vocal style is great, particularly on the songs "Antenna"
and "Hotel Womb", the lead vocalist can certainly put the bass units
of my Warfdales under stress...! I heard that this album has been
released after quite a long break from recording...is the band's
earlier stuff very similar to what they're doing now?

    Ian!

|  |     re .1;

"Starfish" is similar in style to "Heyday" the previous
album (although there has been some progression).

From their first album "Of Skins and heart" (sold outside Oz
as "The Church" and with one different track) through "The Blurred
Crusade", "Seance", "Remote Luxury", "Heyday" and "Starfish" there
has been a definite development of the bands music and style, they
still retain a very 'acoustic' sound to much of what they do and
as you say Steve Kilbey's voice and lyrics are pretty different
    - almost a cross between Lou Reed and Jim Morrison.

If You'd like to hear any of there other stuff (before you buy
it of course ! - 'cause taping is illegal and it doesn't sell them
any records) Then mail me and we'll come to some arrangement.

a lot of Rickenbacker guitar chords through it ?

| | Yep !
Thats the one - incidentally, this song as well as being
great is like an Albatross around the bands neck, they are very
reluctant to play it live usually with Steve changing the emphasis
on certain parts of the lyric ie "So hard finding inspiration.."
and normally throwing in lyrics from a couple of much earlier singles
such as 'Too Fast for You' and 'Bus Driver' - however they normally
do finish up playing it !

By the way the Rickenbacker Guitar bits are courtesy of Marty
Wilson-Piper on of the two Guitarists.

| | Hi,

I am a complete and total church fan ever since "Remote Luxery" came
out in 1983. They're a great band! what more can I say?

Anyways, living here in Mass., I never heard much new about them
before so I actually joined the church fan club which is based in
the city! I wish I found this conference earlier!

I love their new album.....but "seance" is my favorite.

	Okay,
three bits of info for those who are dedicated...
	 1) Casey's Cds in Chelsea now have every album available on Cd !!
	    at a very reasonable 11.95.
	 2) 'Reptile' is out as a single on green vinyl with a previously
unreleased track on the 'b' side (can't remember its name though,
	    and mine hasn't arrived yet).
	  3) Carrere records who everyone thought had gone bust has released
an album called 'Conception' which has stuff from 'of Skins and
Heart/Church' and 'Blurred...' as well as 'Different Man' which
was only available on the 'Sing Songs EP'. As 'Sing Songs' is worth
about 12 quid (and very difficult to find) its worth buying for
that track alone if you haven't already got it.
						Thats all for now
							Graham
	Oops..
Nearly forgot, did you all know that there are 3 Steve Kilbey
albums and a couple of singles ana book available ??
Also a Marty Wilson-Piper solo album, and a Peter Koppes 12" and solo
	album.

| | I've only just stumbled into this conference and am DELIGHTED to find a
    Church note in here.

I have been an admirer since seeing that video on the Whistle Test, and
spent many hours scouring record racks to find anything that they had
    done.

Eventually, I found 'Blurred Crusade' -- and haven't looked back.

My brother also flipped over them and as he's the real collector of the
family he has, over the years, managed to get pretty much every peice
of Church and related-to-Church product. This includes Kilbeys book(s).

I like, very much, the solo stuff from Koppes and Wilson-Piper,
prefering it to Kilbeys solo efforts. However, I rate this man very
highly as a lyricist, vocalist and bass player. Having seen him in
action at London's Town and Country Club a couple of years ago, I can
tell you Kilbey is probobaly one of the best bassists around.

Anyway, latest Church news appeas to be:

Kilbey is working with the guy from the Go-Betweens?, something like
    that,

Wilson-Piper is currently playing guitar for All About Eve, their new
LP 'Touched by Jesus' has just received TWO stars in the NME -- but has
    charted in the LP charts!

I don't know what impact this all has on the Church, but rumour has it
they will still be recording stuff together in the future.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

Ok, so you're not related to Tim, but I bet you could walk over to his

keep these Irish pseudo-poets in line.)

    >>Is it THAT embarrassing? Is Arizona all sand and sun?

Well, yeah. But I talked to the drummer (before I embarrassed myself)
and he was really nice. This was 5 years ago, so I don't remember
much. And no, AZ isn't all sand & sun. It has mountains & snow in the
winter & rain in Aug. & sometimes it's even green.

re: the "empire..." p-name. I got it from the Mekons' last album,
"Rock and Roll," it's a song title. (A brilliant song as well.)

    I didn't see them.

Actually, I do. It's weird but having guests has always made me
unreasonably happy, like buying bottles of Laphroaig for my starving
artist pal Christina. In New York, I used to get them all the time, but
no one wanted to visit Boston. Sensibly enough.

It must be some atavistic pre-Christian Celtic-Scandinavian cult of
    hospitality urge.

everyone has one livin' on their doorstep in Frisco. It's a very

| | Oh yeah, we have plenty of those types of transients too (not so
coincidentally, George has BEEN that kind of transient). The Haight &
Fillmore homeless guys'n'gals are pretty much the same as in my old
East Village haunts (healthier, and fewer families, thank goodness),
but there's been a disturbing upturn in drug dealers lately (probably
because of the computer terminal they've installed in one of the cafes,
brings in a real ugly crowd) and of course just up Haight a bit you get
a phenom peculiar to S.F., the "homeless wannabe". Buncha deadheads
come to town to get drunk for a week and hassle tourists for change.
    Ain't that America?

Hey, send me mail sometime & tell me about other places you stay up
