John 16:33 wraps up a message Jesus started in ch 14 (these 3 chapters
are among my favorite in all of the Bible.
But, I think to understand v 33, we must go back to about verse 29. Jesus
has stopped speaking and his disciples react. They have heard the purpose
of the Holy Spirit. They have heard Jesus state to Philip that if they
have seen Him they have seen the Father. They have heard of the promise
of Heaven and the place that He is preparing for them..
And now, in v 32 He is telling them that they are about to be scattered
leaving Jesus alone..and that while they are out and on their own
they can rest in the knowledge that He has not left them, that they have
will have the Holy Spirit, and though they will face uncertainty, persecution
and tribulation, they can rest in the knowledge that Jesus who has promised
them many things, has overcome, conquered the world, and that they can trust
Him to deliver that which he has promised.
And, I can say, were it not for His overcoming the world and leaving me
with His holy Spirit and His Word, I could not have dealt with the issues
that have come into my life these last few days.

John 16:29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and
speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any
man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered,
every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone,
because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In
the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the
world.
