(The following is a *partial* list)
I respect the Bible scholar who
o is out to neither prove nor disprove the Bible.
o would rather know the truth, no matter the possible ramifications.
o distinguishes between present-day understandings and ancient
understandings.
o has a grasp of the history, heresies, and various teachings within Judaism.
o has a grasp of the history, heresies, and various teachings within
Christianity.
o is objective, dispassionate, skeptical and inquisitive.
o takes into consideration extra-biblical history, cultural knowledge,
and circumstantial influences.
o takes into consideration biblical biases and their possible causes.

Then you respect the scientific method, as in examining the bible as an
archeoligist would. I tend to agree with you. But this often alienates
one from those who accept biblical writtings as truth based on faith.
Not to say that belief/faith is wrong or bad. But it's a point of
contention (as I'm sure you're well aware).
There was a 3 part series on The Learning Channel about the life of
Jesus. Part 1 was about the beginning (John the Baptist, the
controversal nativity thing and the early years of Jesus). Part 2 was
about his adult life up until the crucifiction. And part 3 was about
the crucufication and what happened shortly therafter. This series was
presented as a set of interviews with scholors, theologians and
archeologists who are regarded as experts in this field. The insights
about the people/times "around" Jesus were extremely interesting and
gave the viewer greater insight into what might really have been going
on when the new testemant was written.
