| I used to look upon them with some contempt. Now that I'm a Deacon
at my church, I have been trying to make them welcome when they
come to church. I view them as "potential material".

| I'm happy that some are open enough to the gospel to show
up sometimes. I'd rather have them come sometime then not
at all. Very few people commit their lives to Christ without
meaningful contact from someone who has. Church is a great
place to be challenged as well as loved.

| Might the infrequent attendance of some (many) Christians be more a
reflection on their attitudes toward that particular church than their
attitudes toward God? Is it that the service isn't worth the effort or
that God isn't worth the effort? Should regular church members
*complain* about not being able to find a seat, or thank God that
their church is so full that they can't even find a seat?
Ok, I admit that this hits a bit of a nerve. I'm pretty much a CESO +
WRG (When Guilt Ridden). I really think I'd go more regularly if I
found a church community that I felt comfortable with. Coming from a
Roman Catholic upbringing, I don't find the Mass that inspiring or
fulfilling. (With the exception of the Homily it's sort of like
reciting the multiplication tables week after week.) And I'm somewhat
timid to experiment with other churches. (I can just see my mother
gasping for air, making the sign of the cross, and clutching here
Rosary if I told here that I was attending a (gasp!) Protestant
church.) Maybe I'll check out Mark's church... if he's deacon it can't
be THAT bad :^)
There. I did my bit of sharing... maybe is sheds some light on what's
going through the mind of a CESO.

| Rest assured, Richard, if I feel any sting it is inflicted by my own
conscience and not your note. I just wanted to share my insights.
When I was a regular attending parishioner I heard the complaints from
the "faithful" with regard to the CESO's. Now, from the other side,
more or less, I have a different perspective. No doubt there are those
CESO's that attend Mass or services at these times for other reasons,
but I can only explain mine.

I have a real problem with making judgments about people based on
when and how often they attend church. It all stems from people giving
me a hard time for attending church only once or twice a week when I
was in college I guess.
Using an occasional visit to church to label someone (including ones
self) a Christian is a stretch. So is labeling someone a "bad
Christian" based on their attending church only on occasion. What is
important is a relationship with Jesus and that can not be judged
externally. Especially by such superficial things as church attendance.

Or, as my former mother in law used to refer to her husband as a member of
the "hatched, matched and dispatched" club..attending church for christenings,
weddings, and funerals.

| CESO Christians don't bother me in the least.
I've attended many different kinds of worship, from high church
formality to evangelical spontaneity, from the unnerving stillness of
unprogrammed Quaker Meetings to the music-drenched worship characteristic
of many Pentecostal churches. And guess what?! Not one of them is wrong
or bad. An not one of them is for everyone.
If folks only feel moved to attend worship on an occasional basis,
that to me is better than nothing.
